Use of a classic boombox as "speakers" for a computer

simonmackay - 2008-08-12 01:31

Hi all!

How many of you are connecting your computer sound output through a boombox rather than PC speakers? What has your experience been like with this, whether with game sound, playing MP3s or listening to the sound of YouTube videos?

With regards,

Simon Mackay

Hiya.

When i'm on my laptop i always use my boomboxes as source of sound. My experience has been that if i try to connect my boomboxes with cables and such the sound gets amplified some how, kinda afraid i'll break my poor boombox.

I use a FM-transmitter to connect my laptop and boombox and that works wonderfull. Stereo sound and all.

I quite enjoy listening this way. Been gaming quite a bit shoot-em up's where stereo-sound sure is an advantage, and it works. I usually just place my laptop in front of the boombox and enjoy the experience.

Although it's not "top-notch" hi-fi quality it sure works for me.

I'm using an FM transmitter too. The quality isn't what you'd call reference with the cheap one I'm using but it does the job nicely.

For mp3s, internet radio streams, youtube and other junk digital formats the sound is definitely a good enough listenable quality. It also lets me take my radios around the house/yard and continue listening. Especially handy if you've got a favourite internet radio station.

I think these are a good option as line-in isn't present on a lot of boxes, but all of them have radios that can tune in to an FM transmitter.

This thread here discusses them too.

Rock On.

Yeh, using a decent b-box will be a step up from most "2.0" PC speakers, or ones built into monitors, & especially laptop speakers. ...& its more fun, of course.

At work I have a "2.1" speaker system (L & R plus a little subwoofer thing) & the sound is a match for any half decent b-box. I used to have my Kaboom hooked up all the time, but it was a bit iffy in the office. I'd forget I had it turned up for something much earlier & then it would hammer out across the office when I hit something like a myspace page with music Smile Also I didn't want to wear out my Kaboom using it all day at work.

I've not had Asdexander's problems with sound levels & b-boxes, as the sound levels from a PC are so configurable.

Generally, an FM transmitter is a useful thing to have too. Good "future proofing" for your b-boxes.

I used to do that all the time... with my Commodore 64. Wink

If your unit has a line-in connection, you can get very good results when using it as "speakers" for a computer. The trick would be to set the computer's output volume to a level where the sound won't distort and use the volume control on the boombox to adjust the sound level to your liking or situation.

I am using the Sanyo M9998 as "speakers" for my PC and it certainly does the job with MP3s (I 'rip' my CDs out as 192kbps WMA files), Internet radio, YouTube video and, especially, game audio. Once I had set up an Age Of Empires network game between someone on my PC and someone on a laptop. The laptop typically sounded very tinny while the PC with the boombox provided real "punchy" audio for the game effects during the war scenes. Today, I watched a YouTube video demonstratio of a software remote control for Windows Media Player or iTunes and the music certainly sounded very "real" through the Sanyo.

Hell yeah! I have my Panasonic RX-5050 hooked up to the computer via headphone jack to RCA inputs of the box. I listen to live365.com everyday and it works great. Sure, sound quality may not be up to audiophile standards, but hell, it is what it is. A ghetto-blasting scream machine, and it does its job when I'm in the noisy warehouse. Cool
Peace,
Paul Z.

The J-1 is my box of choice. It's connected to my laptop since a few weeks. Before i used the Goldstar TSR-800.

Both boxes are thumping hard and do have great sound.

I bet no PC-speakers could give me the feeling i have when listening throughout one of my boomers Cool

I did connect my ZX-7 to my laptop Cool
The sound is great but I do not like it that way,
I better use the loudspeakers from my laptop itself Smile

How are you guys connecting your FM transmitter to your laptop? Just via the laptop's headphone port?

Did have the M90 plugged in, but now got the Crown 850 on duty as the M90 has gone for repairs.

Will always use boomboxes for all audio needs aside from HIFI system.

All the time!!
I use which ever box is within my reach at the time.
They all have headphone to rca connectors on them and I just plug in my laptop wherever I am.
Using the Telefunken HP-800 currently as i type.
