You'll think I'm mad, but...

isolator42 - 2008-12-24 05:59

...last night I made a hole in my M90, on purpose.

Mine suffers from a jamming servo mechanism if not used for a while (days, not weeks) - when you press play it gets stuck ½ way. The only way to sort it is to give the flywheel a nudge, which involves taking the back off - every time.

I've tried to fix it many times - it has new belts & isn't dirty, etc. But as the problem takes a while to surface, it's very difficult to pin down.
As well as the inconvenience, every time I open it up, there is the risk of me buggering something else up much more important...

So, I've made a neat hole inside the battery compartment - just big enough to get my index finger in to reach that flywheel.
Obviously, because it's in the battery compartment, the hole isn't normally visible & it isn't big enough to upset the correct fitting of batteries.

Afterwards, I sat there on the floor, listening to it playing some old tape of rock/metal (Thunder, Poison, Quireboys) & then orchestral Christmas carols on some FM radio station.

By God, it sounds nice.

Dunno whether that opinion is improved by the worldwide cachet of this model, or my own separate fondness for it, but it just sounds so sorted.
Sat there on the floor listening until 2am. Legs hurt now... Smile

Next thing would be one of those things that was used to cranked up a vehicle back in the early 1900's! Big Grin

At least she won't be giving you anymore grief!

Sounds like the M-90 was punishing you for not listening to her daily by refusing to cooperate when you decide to use her.

Shes a harsh taskmistress, but I like the cut of her jib!

Great soloution though Paul, I for one applaude your ingenuity.

Rock On.

I used that trick on a Sansei I have.
The Play function get sutck and the front can't be removed to service it. So a little hole to move de flywheel and that's all.
I changed the main belt of course.

if your gonna use it then make it useable. even if you have to drill a hole

enskanker - 2008-12-26 03:14

Paul, is this your first hole in one?

Sounds like a good solution, the battery compartment isn't exactly on display. This makes a good Tech tip.

Hey, thanks for the responses guys.
Wow, not one "you should be shot for defiling the sacred one"... I'm happified.
Glad you think it's a sane move. With tte best will in the world, I don't play tapes much, but I want to keep this deck going, above all others...

I could post a pic if you like?

Hey, why not glue funnels full of oil to the front to keep the mechanism spruced, or better still, weld a screwdriver to the head adjustment screw through a hole melted in the cassette drawer for those 'on the fly' asymuth adjustments.

You crazy Brits..... oh, wait,
