Hiring out one of my boxes... how much??

billy.the.binman - 2009-07-02 18:04

I put an ad out a while ago to hire out my boxes so they can earn their keep, for people to use in photographs/videos and the like.

i have received an email from a shop in the westend of london, a fashion shop, they want one for a display.

im thinking one of my crowns, since thats the most rubbish in sound but most obvious in retro looks, so ideal for a display piece.

they want it for 4 weeks but im unsure as to how much to charge - a crown ghetto blaster has a certain value yet you cant just go and get one that easily when you want one.

i was going to do like £10 a photo session but in this case i would be letting it out of my possession and for a fair amount of time, where its liable to be damaged although they say they would take great care of it. i believe they would too.

so any idea how much i should be charging - i will add my train fare on top of this to drop it off and collect.

they have pointed out they are on a limited budget, so im not sure, any ideas people?

What you need to do is offer them three choices at three different prices. Give a good variety and they can choose how much to spend. If they want the Crown look, they pay the Crown price. Take your transportation into account for each choice. Don't make the cheapest choice too small, just make it of lesser value... Thefore lesser risk.. If you have to bring them all for them to see you might want to have them narrow it down to two before you travel all the way there....

I would ask for some kind of deposit.
As its not a one day thing.
Since its not quite the rental you had in mind.

Maybe a box you would like to sell
would be best in this case,
you might get an offer.

I've loaned boxes on numerous occaisons. Never for a fee though. However I've always insisted on some kind of liability insurance for the period they are out of my care.

cool cool thanks peeps.

the shop isnt a charity shop or anything, its one of those hyper expensive places on bond street, didnt quite realise at first. their website products page has mens jackets for £1000+, jeans for £400 etc.

ill give them some options see what they think.

one more thing to think about is if it gets stolen Eek

you could always get some of the chip paint that they use on bikes - it paints on some where and dries - when looked under a microscope it has a serial number in it (i think it's stamped or lasered on bits of the metal flake)

uv maker pen inside the battery compartment to write address - same for testing paper money

a card with your name and address hidden inside the box

don't forget insurence will be to replace what the box is worth - so you could go on a pecentage of that for a weeks work ?

you could always take vouchers/items from the store as payment

hope some of it helps - B Wink
