GF-777's from China (ebay)

tburick - 2008-12-19 16:33

Anyone here bought a GF-777 from China on ebay?
There's 3 maybe 4 sellers I always see. They all seem to have really good feedback and the BBX's look incredibly clean and all are represented as 100% functional.
BTW - any idea where they get these 777's in such volume?? It seems like an endless supply. I started suspecting that they are knock-offs...

I got one from xiaoson (spelling not correct I'm sure)...Had it packed like a tank!!! BUT....

Back had a crack in it, can't see it at all now!!! Smile

He gave me a $100.00 off so for $300.00 I got a fully working GF777Z that looks real nice.

I'd rather buy one from in the states, China,Hong Kong, etc. to far to ship and possibility for damage is real high!!

I usually never ship boomboxes, however 2 of my only few GOOD experiences from shipping came from a seller in China. I purchased 2 GF-777's a few months apart (1 777 ended up in the bottom of a canal...don't ask lol)...both arrived exactly as stated and in MINT condition. They also had arrived to me in Canada in 5 days...so my 2 experiences were good Wink

I also got mine from China - like Gord's - mine was in good condition cosmetically, but I had to repair FM stereo on it - for which I got some money back from the seller....

im.out.of.hear - 2008-12-19 17:49

just spotted this thread..
i got a GF909 (jap 777) from hong kong, came surface (snail mail) took 2 months to arrive, got stung with uk import duty, arrived smashed beyond repair..claimed on it,took about 6 months but got refund minus shipping & import duty, the box got scrapped..
so my advise is,get one but pay the extra for air 5-7 day..i`d love a GF999,One of my all time fave boxes but to expensive and risky for me these days..

Many Chinese located 777's were made outside of Japan, and some here have noted are not of the same quality as units made in Japan. Something to look out for when purchasing I suppose.

eddy - 2008-12-20 01:55

I bought my first 777 from someone in China too.
Not one single problem.
Thing arrived here perfectly and was 100 % functionnal.
You got to have a bit of luck with the shipping of a 777.

tburick - 2008-12-20 05:12

I took the chance on the Chinese 777. I just paid for one on ebay:

I hope this one is in nice condition and arrives in one piece.

eddy - 2008-12-20 06:00

I bought a Knobset once from this seller.
No problems. The set arrived fast too
I hope the deal with your 777 will go smoothly

masterblaster - 2008-12-21 01:34

when I was in China I saw many of them and they all looked good. Definitely not knock offs. One thing about boxes from Asia is that they tend to have more pitting in the chrome than boxes from places with less moisture in the air...?? As long as they package well it should be fine. You'd be amazed to know how much "outdated" appliances, radios, clothes etc end up in countries where people can't afford the same luxuries that we have in the west and in Europe.

tburick - 2008-12-21 04:40

I just received word from the seller that my GF-777 has been shipped from China.

My attitude is a bit more reserved this time. I'm going with "hope for the best but expect the worst" Smile

777 should arrive in 5-7 business days. Count down begins at T minus 7 Big Grin

panasonic.fan - 2008-12-21 11:12

Fingers crossed for safe arrival.

Has your first 777 seller responded yet about making a claim?

jlf - 2008-12-21 12:11

Im considering buying one myself...

I look forward to your full report upon arrival!

tburick - 2008-12-21 16:05

I haven't heard from the seller lately. Friday he said that he would make arrangements for UPS to pick it up. That's all. I am assuming that means that I am going to get a refund (?)
I have sent him two emails since and haven't heard from him yet. One email was to ask if he wanted to sell it to me CHEAP as a parts machine. Other email was to ask specifically for a full refund if we couldn't strike a deal for parts.

I will give a full report as soon as the China 777 arrives. I asked the seller to pack it EXTRA good. We'll see what happens.

BTW - a side note - I've noticed that this particular seller lists the 777's a few ways. Some are $399 with free shipping. Some are $399 plus $200 shipping, still others are $259 with $200 shipping. Oddly, all 777's have EXACTLY the same description...just cut and paste text.
I've studied the pics of all of them carefully and none appear to vary in cosmetic quality very much. I wonder what the deal is?? Mine was $399 with free shipping (5-7 days).

thafuzz - 2008-12-21 16:51

Best of luck my friend. I wanna hear good news! BTW, Is that you on that Hog? Razz

tburick...i was in the EXACT situation as you are currently in a couple of years ago. I had won an auction for a huge Tecsonic J1 Jumbo off e-bay from a seller in Florida. This is how things ended up for me by the time it was all said and done.

I purchased the J1 Jumbo and paid with a MONEY ORDER. The seller had packaged it and sent it by UPS with insurance to cover my purchase. After i had received my boombox "smashed" i immediately contacted the seller to let him know. He avoided my e-mails for a few days but i was so persistant as i had over $500US into this boombox. Within the week, UPS showed up at my house and picked up the bbombox that i re-packaged with the same materials (make sure you keep EVERYTHING/ALL packaging!)and they gave me a "New" tracking number.

After 5 days, my damaged boombox had been shipped back to the seller and he had eventually filed a claim with UPS. It took months before i heard anything from the seller and the seller had actually kept my +500US money order, he also had the damaged boombox AND he actually kept the insurance money that UPS sent to him and he avoided me like the plaque. I had a computer friend of mine "intervene" and put LOTS AND LOTS of pressure on this horrible seller until he refunded most of my money...i still lost close to $200 though.

When there is a claim apparently (in my case)it is up to the SELLER to make the claim since he ships the item, and since HE has the paperwork and proof of paying for the insurance.

In your situation, i don't think you need to worry about anything because your seller (redding1) is most likely an honest and trustworthy seller. Just be patient, and if you have no news or settlement before the PAYPAL claim deadline (if you used PAYPAL)...open a claim/dispute and you will win. Sorry for the long post and i hope this puts things in perspective a little better for you Wink

***I'll keep my fingers crossed that your new 777 arrives in perfect shape like my 2 did Big Grin

That's me on my Vespa PX150. I built the single wheel trailer that's attached - my nephew is in the back.

Collecting BBX's, Vespa riding, designing robots, wearing vintage clothes, collecting 1st Generation ('86-'91) Mercury Sables...and throw in severe dyslexia. Everyone calls me eccentric...I have no idea why. Roll Eyes

You guys seem to get me though Smile

tburick - 2008-12-21 17:26

gsbadbmr,
What a horror story. I had a similar issue last year with a Realistic SCR-8 from a French Canadian guy. A life-sucking fiasco that dragged on for months. Got only some of my money back.

Shipped it back to him in SEVERELY compressed micro-fine shredded paper. I fit two large garbage bags of that stuff in a rather small shipping box. Put the box way toward the bottom. Had to have someone SIT on the box to tape it. Ever see a party favor pop when you pull the string?... Eek

Laugh Out Loud

The beauty of using Paypal is that the majority of the time that there is a problem...you "generally" get most of your money back Big Grin

There is one seller in China who is a tool..... his auctions always start with the word Xianjing or Tainjing. He leaves his descriptions vague, and does not always reveal problems.

johnnygto - 2008-12-22 09:26

Hey tburick,

Nice Vespa and trailer too!!

Trust me when you collect things that other people think is garbage or ridiculous... eccentric is the nice word they use to describe you... I've notably been called a few other ones Smile

Johnny <-not trying to hi-jack this thread... b-bye.

Yeah, he sucks

tburick - 2008-12-30 16:39

Just contacted GF-777 seller through ebay. Told him that several cassette functions not working properly, muffled sound on tape decks, and severe static on volume and balance. Radio was represented as all cassette functions working properly and all controls functional with no problems. Let's see how he responds.
I hope I am not being too particular about these issues. I understand that it is a 25 yr old BBX...however, what he represented and what he sold are two different things. What should one expect from a $400 GF-777? I would think that a person should be able to buy a 100% functional 777 for that price. Yes? No?

mrb - 2009-01-04 20:19

on ebay you don't get what you pay for

tburick - 2009-01-05 18:15

Seller just contacted me regarding the Gf-777. He offered a $50 price adjustment for the tape decks and severe static issue. That would bring the total for the radio to $350. I suggested that he examine his radios individually and with more care...and to stop using generic sweeping descriptions.

I hate ebay. I love ebay.

What to do?....

Looks like I'll end up leaving positive feedback, although I am still disgruntled at his lack of care and OBVIOUS oversights. GGRRRRR! Mad

Would not buy from this seller again.

hoyhoysum - 2009-01-05 18:36

It has been a while i am looking at ebay for the GF-777 especially the ones from China. At frst it looks impressive, clean and nice. Subsequent units looks the same. I believe it must cut and paste. I think best is to ask them for serial no and send actual pictures of the unit. Preferbably high resolution via email.
