RX-5050 sound compared to 5150?

reli - 2008-07-31 13:42

Do they sound the same, or different?

5150 is better by far. over all sound

The 5050 is king of all mid-size boomboxes! I like the 5150 too, but the 5050 is very impressive for its size....

Well I think the 5150 sounds muddled.......The 5050 has killer looks, but if it doesn't sound any better than the 5150 then forget about it.

I've often wondered about the 5150.It is such a beautiful box!I had a 5050 and have a 5100.Both of them are really loud and have a similar type of sound.I'd describe those as having a very forward mid range and a bright sound. Its interesting that reli describes the 5150 as muddled sounding as that's my opinion of the other two.Though minimal musical arrangements sound amazingly good, complex music seems to lack detail at higher volumes. Its sort of a soupy blended sound to the mids and highs.I don't claim to have golden ears. This is just an opinion.

On my 5150 the tweeters barely do anything unless you crank up the volume. And you have to crank up the bass all the way up too. My TPR-950 is much better at low volume levels.

But the Panny's Ambience setting is better than most.

Reli, if the 5150 isn't your taste, the 5050 probably isn't either. If you're looking for real punch and output in a box that size, the JVC RC-M70 and Sharp GF-9191 are worth considering, as are the Aiwa CS-600 and CS-660.

I like the 5050, it's got better sound IMO than the 5150 in a smaller package. In fact, for how thin the 5050 is, the bass is surprising. Still, the bigger driver does pretty much all the work reproducing the highs, just as with the 5150. The 5250 and 5085 both have much better performing (and noticeable) highs from their tweeters.
