oldskool = world class bass

redbenjoe - 2008-07-28 11:42

as a separate thread from our florida meet ---

want everybody to know that oldy hit gold in the big world of deep , defined and HARD pounding bass output --

he made a speaker mod to his stock (?? not sure) sanyo c9 ---
and all at the meet might agree --that it was like double awesome !! Smile

we have never heard the jvc floyd doomers or perhaps some other big custom boxes --

so - all we have as a comparo is the kaboom and the famous telefunken studio --

well --without any exaggeration --his c9 was easily like both of those mothers combined --
except it was even much louder ---

nice one, oldy Smile

Yup, that really surprised me as well! Was it Juan who kept calling that C9 the boombox version of a Pitbull?

After a good day of listening to a lot of boxes, it eventually came time to compare what we agreed were the two loudest machines there, which ended up being that Sanyo C9 vs the Toshiba WX-1.

The boxes were put on the floor in front of chair that was about 7 feet away and blasted with the same signal fed into the line-in on each unit via a splitter. IMHO, with loudness and eq's set differently on each machine it was difficult to pick a winner and I think I liked how the WX-1 "sounded" just a bit more... But with the bass/treble at flat the C9 was quite noticeably louder than the Toshiba. That sucker really jams!

redbenjoe - 2008-07-28 12:49

yup JT -- the big wx-1 had more balance --
but nothing i have heard came even close to that bass hit of the c9

Well, just to be fair, the woofers in the C9 are not stock. Freddie replaced the old papers with newer polypropylenes, which made a HUGE difference. Maybe upgrading the WX-1 with newer technology would help it too. Smile

There's no denying that when both the C9 and WX-1 were blasting together, as loud as possible, there was no other combination of boxes present that could touch them.

I for one was amazed at this moded C-9 of oldskool and yes JT I called it the little Pitbull. It's been such a long time of not hearing the WX-1, I used to own one and I'll be frank it could be a serious contender towards the M-90.

oldskool69 - 2008-07-28 14:27

Thanks guys! The only change to the C9 was the speakers, otherwise, completely stock. I would have destroyed the flimsy cones that came with it eventually. Here is a pic of the original cone:

As you can see, the major issue with most units, especially component sets, are that they are saddled with inadequate speakers for the power. The original speakers warbled and moaned for mercy and I knew the C9 was better than the sum of it's speakers. Big Grin

Truth be told, I have posted long before that I had modded this puppy. (See the date stamp on the pics.)

Annnnddd...The only thing you can acheive attempting to extract more power by using a lower impendance speaker is risk cooking your amp. (The impendance of the polys matches the originals and the sensitivity is close.) The C9 is merely getting to use it's power now while not sounding like crap at high volume. If there were a mod to the amp section or something like that I would not counterpoint the issue. I would love to hear a speaker modded WX-1. If impendance and sensitivity matches the originals, it would still not be any louder. Maybe sharper on highs or mids, etc. But not louder. The amp section is what it is.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, that what I really did was not make it more powerful, but gave the amp section something to chew on. And yes I STILL want a WX-1!Big Grin

Here is what she was before...

And AFTER:

The C7 is similar with smaller speakers and less powerful but still nice as well. The C7 has also been sold under the Yamaha name. Big Grin

transamguy1977 - 2008-07-28 18:34

The C-9 was indeed a beast and volume wise was loud as loud can be.
we also pitted it against my modded m90.
unfortunately my 90 has 8 ohm speakers and although its a clean sounding heavy hitter the output is reduced with the higher ohm speakers.
fords m90 was even louder than mine.
my WX-1 is probaly the bassiest box I have but the output volume is pretty shy imo.
I've heard from other owners the same story.
it is definately a must have but no competition for the C-9.
If I wasn't getting ready to leave I really would have liked to compare it to the C-100 Conion . I would say without a doubt they are in the same league volume wise.
Next time we will battle them off.
Major props to the C-9 it IS a frigging pit bull Cool

So its official i need to bring my modded m90 somehow cuz it has the correct ohm speakers etc no offence frank bro. I sure would have loved to be there thats fo sure. i agree the tosh probbly has more bass but mine is quiet compared to my m90 well quiet infact but it is still pretty loud. eg the kaboom flat out is about no 6 on my m90 Big Grin

- 2008-07-28 20:29

2 questions how was this testing done through line in if so my m90 stands no chance Laugh Out Loud and also and more importantly what did everyone think of the now famous cp7? Smile

l.lopez - 2008-07-29 07:49

Smile I have both of these boxes the Sanyo C-9 and the Yamaha PC-9 and both have stock speakers and have the same 80 watts on them but I did a bass comparism and the Yamaha delivers deeper bass than his cousin Sanyo but the Sanyo is more of a screamer but still sounds very good with plenty of volume power. Great box you got there oldscholl69. Smile

peter.griffin - 2008-07-29 09:47

my c9 is all high. Woofers don't even move a mm.

Old skool, do you mind letting us know which speakers your replaced them with? Size, etc?

ThanksSmile

retro.addict - 2008-07-29 10:16

How did the Telefunken Studio compare to the JVC Kaboom in the bass department?

They are KLH's. 6" Solid Polypropelene between 1/32 and 1/16 thick cones. Rated 6 to 8 ohms. Got them from a set of bookshelf speakers I found at a thrifty. When you first see them they look like pure plastic but are much more pliable than solid plastic would be. Super nice speakers.

Beware when using 6" speakers because the basket size may not conform with the cabinet. I had to carefully mod the basket for them to fit and lucky for me I keep tin snips for sheetmetal.Big Grin

The tweeters are some Wal-Mart (not Dura-Brand) cheepos for cars. I have a set in my truck and I'd recommend them to anyone before plunking down big cash for a name brand. They handle a ton of power and I thought they would work well in the Sanyo and boy do they ever!

Bobby heard them on the way to Florida so he can tell you. Smile
