A couple of unknowns maybe ???

Would Readers Digest make a boombox ?

Well it seems yes.

Also picked this one up recently,
an Expo.
Have not heard of that before.
Jens ?

Still works but lower cassette plays a little slow so will see if i can fix that.
Normally i look forward to cleaning these up when i get them but, umm, not so much this time Frown

Yes, i have a mono from them.
Produced from CROWN!

That Reders Digest box was the same type distributed through department stores.

I have the Eaton Viking version. These were also sold at JC Penneys as well I think and there are some othere AKA's but only the mighty Jens can help here as I have no BBDB.

Not a bad looking box and is OK sounding as long as you don't push it. Smile

Label from mine: Wink

aza - 2008-12-03 04:29

Well not as uncommon as i thought ! The idea of RD making boomboxes still seems strange to me but.
Thanks guys

AZA!
you are bringing rare boxes onto the tablet!

the reader`s digest was in the base only as:

viking-spc7499 IBBN 7-03964
like oldschool mentioned above,
and as
g.e.-3-5267 IBBN 7-00335

Now to the EXPO,this one must be a super duper extraordinary box!

I like these radios, nice find AZA. Smile

redbenjoe - 2008-12-03 06:51

SmileAZA --cool finds--

and you might be in the big $$ chips on that EXPO box Big Grin
because --a few months ago -- Jens was running a contest for the worlds filthiest boxes --

now , if you study the top view --notice that there are no more locations left for a pile of dirt --

therefor -- you box is 100% maxed out // filthy-
and therefor ...........YOU WIN !!

you mean this one!

AZA already showed a gf9696 in that thread, wow!,you`re on the top with 2 boxes then!

Big Grin

but I love those images with old boxes ,you can see times go by...and they WERE USED everywhere,in factories-chicken stables-workshops-kitchens-farmhouses...and imagine all the rock music they were playing over the years...

redbenjoe - 2008-12-03 07:39

yup Jens --USING/enjoying --for some of us - is what its all about .

the collecting/saving aspect is fine --
but not as much REAL fun !! Smile (imho)

as a coincidence --look at jovies post on this related subject in mornings "comparo//NONO" thread -

Just a thought on the Readers Digets boxes...The magazine was quite well known for selling collections of music on lp and tape, both cassette and 8-track in its day. They may have been included as a premium as well as being sold.

aza - 2008-12-03 13:30

Thanks once again for the info Jens. It is always interesting to read the info on some of these boxes. So it seems there are no AKA's for the Expo ?

The Expo was in a farmers shed along with old cars, tractors, farm machinery and such. I must remember to take my camera so i can get pics of boxes like that in their 'natural environment'

I think you are right RBJ, this box is up there with the top players of 'most filthiest'.
It may be physically impossible to naturally collect any more filth on a radio than this one.
This is one radio where i wish i could just stand back and 'hose' it down !

Good point ricksegers, it did seem unusual to me that Readers Digest made boomboxes but what better way for them to promote sales of their audio cassettes !

Thanks again Jens and glad i could add some more interesting radios to the list
