no more ambience stereo sound?

stbnyc - 2008-11-15 18:25

howcome panasonic stop making ambience sound?

jovie - 2008-11-15 22:11

Ambience EQ was developed for 1 piece boxes because the speakers are close together. When 3 piece boxes hit the market,it was possible to separate the speakers wide enough to get decent stereo imaging. This made the EQ simulation of a spacious sound unnecessary. Now 3 piece boxes are gone from the market. All you have today are shelf systems and tiny 1 piece "eggs".Actually I believe the current Panasonic "eggs" still have some sort of spacial enhancement feature.A better question might be why did the manufactures decide to stop making most any type of boombox at all.I don't think its ever been this bad!

SmileExactly! I Agree
Ok,Now the next question is How many Eggs do u own(geez that sounds like How many chickens crossed the Road! Laugh Out Loud) I can say Humbly,Proudly and Truthfully i have 2.
Out of my entire collection 2,That should say somethin'
One Aiwa,One Phillips,i think That would be interesting To know the % of Boomboxes by Members of which Could be classified as The classic 80's Boxes, and then The Decline and Fall Egg Drop Soup. Would be a mighty task but the accountant in me finds that goofy stuff interesting! Laugh Out Loud

I don't think it's any different than "stereo wide" technology, they just do a better job of it than most.

ghettoboom777 - 2008-11-15 22:23

i think this effect is akin to the aural exciter effect that a lot of studios used to use. i could be wrong but it sure sounds like it to me. that part of the signal is emphasized and it creates the illusion of a wider sound.
i am guessing that this was cut as part of cost cutting then brought back on some of the higher end eggs as a dsp effect.
most likely it was a analog effect in the 80s as dsp was just crazy expensive back then.
i have no way of knowing for sure.
its does sound like a aural exciter to me tho.
perhaps a little like a midrange expander.
i do like the effect both on the newer boxes and the older ones.
as boombox prices went down in the late eighties once it became super competitive i am betting it was one of the cuts they made.
when the nineties came boomboxes were given a make over and the prices of them went up again with new models like the panasonic cobratops arriving.
i do think its all about harmonic distortion tho.
yes there can be good harmonic distortion which enhances a sound, sometimes creating psycoaccustic effects which are appeasing to the ear.
