freight $$ kills it

redbenjoe - 2008-06-30 17:36

have a recent quote from a good local shipping company ::
to send a box the size of a panny 7700 with double box insured by air to the UK = US$380 !!

that rate will murder all int'l trade for us.

anybody know how to get this done for much less ??
i think Royal has posted about this --

anyone ???

kittmaster - 2008-06-30 17:37

USPS with insurance.....serious.... Nod Yes

jaredscottfla - 2008-06-30 17:45

Frown That sucks ira
funny, ebay just sent me an email,july1st-july4th list any item on ebay uk for 5 cents,no more double listing fees for listing on both ebay.com,and ebay.uk,honestly i have never done this but some sellers here on s2go may find it tempting, sorry to say i don't have a solution for u but $380.00 sounds way way off even for a panny 7700,Usps will go to 70 lbs how much are they? I've used Dhl internationally, granted never for anything as big as a panny 7700 but the stuff always made it to it's destination in one piece, and The ABSOLUTE Most i ever had was to send a Mitsubsishi Tx 67 to Israel 97.00
Granted That was 2 years ago but still... $380.00 What a Joke! Fedex Right? Wink

redbenjoe - 2008-06-30 17:51

jared --i think my shipper uses UPS --
i dont trust the USPS -- so thats out

jaredscottfla - 2008-06-30 18:03

Frown i think they will be the cheapest. Try Dhl For fun.
go to: www.dhl.com
put in the dimensions, and the weight. If Ups is that much DHL won't be alot less. U think ur shipper is padding for Xtra Profit? Are They Packing and shipping for u,a la Mail Boxes etc?
I Know we have discussed this here before but i'm done with Ups,they suck... Big Grin I sweat it out with anything i recieve that is shipped with them. I just bought another GE super radio on Amazon, and Of course The seller used UPS. Thank G-d it Got Here in one Piece But The Exterior Carton was Crushed! The Shipper Packed it with about 3 layers of Bubble Wrap and DOUBLE Boxed it,That was THE ONLY thing that saved me from getting a Destroyed Radio.
For another few hundred bucks above your packers ship quote i could get u an airline ticket to London, and u could hand deliver it! LOL! Laugh Out Loud

redbenjoe - 2008-06-30 18:09

thanks jared -- i will try that --and YES - i do use one of those 'middle-man' shipping companies --
and here is my only good reason --

when THEY pack it -- then THEY will get the insurance just in case -- and with NO delays or problems --however .
when WE pack -- and then a problem happens =WE HOPE to get the insurance $ !!

jaredscottfla - 2008-06-30 18:39

Understood.
I have had my problems with the Usps too,
and the collecting of insurance if an item is damaged, but still 380.00? No one as per your thread title suggests is gonna agree to pay that!
Dhl like Ups will req a Commercial invoice .
Keep that in Mind it's a pain in the behind they need 4 copies not incl yours. I really think the po is the best option for this right now, they are not chging an intl fuel surcharge like dhl, ups, and fedex, even by airmail, i hated intl parcel post(surface mail) but hey it was cheap and always got there!Let us know how u make out.

thafuzz - 2008-06-30 18:43

DHL's estimator would charge me $749 if I was to ship a 492 to Spain Eek Was just curious.

jaredscottfla - 2008-06-30 18:52

Eek OMG!!! Adam that is wild. Just to compare R/t Air From Nyc- Madrid 699.00
Mia to Madrid 799.00. Laugh Out Loud
I guess there is the anwser ira, your shipper is offering the ira bargain price of ONLY 380.00 to the UK!
RIDICULUOS! I guess if i sell anything soon on ebay,i'll be using the po or just shipping in the good ol' usa. (ok maybe Canada !) Big Grin

fatdog - 2008-06-30 18:53

Look at this way - $380 is only £190. Wink

I remember when I shipped my 9962 last year, the shipping company charged me $25 to pack it for me and then the UPS fee was $28. Needless to say, I haven't gone back to them. I try to get my packing materials for free now.

redbenjoe - 2008-06-30 19:04

jared -- and DHL was 430 on my 380 box !!

---waiting for royal to wake up to jump in here Smile

jaredscottfla - 2008-06-30 19:05

I Agree Smile Big Grin Leaving

jaredscottfla - 2008-06-30 19:10

Smilethere used to be a shipping company like emery, that only did shipping between the us and the uk,i think fedex swallowed them up like dhl swallowed airborne. I know there are shipping companies in NYC that spec in shipping to Specific countries and they are less my freind in Israel, knew about it,granted it does not do us in fla or anyone else any good! Laugh Out Loud Try a Google search maybe like cheap shipping to the UK,who knows crazier S*** has happened B4! Laugh Out Loud

l.lopez - 2008-06-30 19:47

Eek Dang that sucks Red but USPS is not that bad I beleave is the most affordable carrier out there. I shipped a Panasonic RX-C300 to Hong Kong for $280.00 bucks but I think DHL is pretty good itself you can pack it with plenty of bubble wrap and still make it a not too big and heavy box. I hope it works out RBJ.

redbenjoe - 2008-06-30 19:59

thanks all --
here is my huge problem with the USPS --

once upon a time i shipped a $400 box to a usa customer -- the post office destroyed it --
it was packed very well --but they claimed it was not packed well enough --
and they paid ZERO !!
so - for me -- i am on never-again terms with USPS

but agree that they are alot cheaper than the commercial carriers.

sinister - 2008-06-30 20:40

really rbj. i always found fedex and dhl to be a good price and hardly any drama. well there was that one time to Canada Mad as far as overseas usps is the way to go. mark as gift and no customs charge.

redbenjoe - 2008-06-30 20:55

sin --probably --
except now there are fuel surcharges on top of more fuel charges -- the 380 guy told me that this UK shipment would have been 200 a few months ago --
its real bad news if we can no longer buy/sell/trade with our europe members

sinister - 2008-06-30 21:10

yeah i guess that makes sense. i just sold a nakamichi 600 tape deck and it went to g.b. cost 78 bux you may be right.

walkgirl - 2008-07-01 00:19

I did pay €50,- for shipping once!, but the good
part is that it did take the walkman only 1 day to
get here from Italy Big Grin

So I was rather pleased with that I Agree

jaredscottfla - 2008-07-01 00:27

Smile it must have been special nicolle! I'm too cheap! Laugh Out Loud

walkgirl - 2008-07-01 01:04

Yes Jared!, it was a like new sony dd9 walkman Cool, it was really like new, it still is Smile

Plus I am rather unDutch at things like that I Agree

oldskool69 - 2008-07-01 04:10

Well, he cheapest route is surface freight but more and more carriers are getting away from that and forcing our hands. Your best bet is to find a carrier who is willing to put it on a boat. It takes longer but it's a lot cheaper! Smile

masterblaster84 - 2008-07-01 08:10

These mamoth increases in shipping will likely kill a lot of sales that where normal in just the last few years. Makes finding boxes local all the more important. Wink

- 2008-07-01 08:18

Is that the trade you are doing with royal ira? if so he will love the c c c c conion. cant wait for mine Big Grin.

redbenjoe - 2008-07-01 09:07

nope tim --royal is too slick to ever trade with me !! Smile

i only mentioned his name because he has posted recently about shipping form UK to USA

r.o.y.a.l - 2008-07-01 09:12
