Why have a "sleep" function ??

reli - 2008-11-14 18:15

I mean seriously, what is the point of this sleep switch? All it does is turn it off, so why not just use the power off switch? Confused

prime - 2008-11-14 18:30

I think when you enable it, the radio will work while the tape deck is running. When the deck shuts off from an end-of-tape condition, the radio shuts off too.

Other boxes may do it differently but the function in general is a timed delay off function whether it uses the tape deck or digital clock.

The idea of the sleep function is to fall asleep to the radio. To do this you put a tape in the deck and then put it in sleep mode. Then press the play button on the tape deck, when the tape shuts off the radio will shut off and you should be asleep....... Nod Yes

Hi-That is true unless it's like KISS or something crazy like Metallica or Quiet Riot!
Then you might not be sleeping to much! Razz
I like to listen to The Isley Brothers or something cool like Kleer to fall asleep to!
Have a super weekend-Ghettobooom777 Smile.

Well there are two problems with that theory. Razz
First, the tape player on this box doesn't have auto stop. So I think it would be dumb to fall asleep with a tape playing, because your motor would get damaged.

Second, even if it DID have auto stop, there's still no need for a sleep switch, because the box is already in a power-off mode when the tape isn't running. Notice on the selector switch that "power off" is shared with "tape".

Well then if you don't believe me.... Did you ever try it out to see how it is supposed to work? Tap Toes Wink

I love that photo you use PRIME!!!

Smileskip is right,a few of my boxes have a sleep button, i've used it on my zenith in my bedroom, and did fall asleep listening to old time radio tapes. I always use it on my radios that are equpped with it,i never could fall asleep with the tv on,radio always. Wink

Another use is you start recording a program, and you leave home, when tapes ends the system shuts off itself. That's is mentioned in the RS4300 owners manual.
The idea of the sleep is a timer by mechanism, a bit silly unless both radio and tape deck are being used (in case recroding from radio)
But spend 30 or 45 minutes of mechanism to stop the radio is not a good idea.
Also, the stop function most work fine ...

I remember using that on my M90 as a teen. Everytime the tape "stopped", the clunking woke me upFrown

Sure did.........Tape motor freezes and jams up at the end of the tape, just as expected, no matter whether "sleep" is engaged or not.

skippy1969 - 2008-11-15 14:14

Well that sucks. Mad I'm sure the engineers who designed the auto stop mechanism did'nt mean for it work 20 plus years in the future. Frown

reli - 2008-11-15 15:36

Well it doesn't have an auto-stop feature in the first place, so I don't see how you guys think the tape would stop.

r.o.y.a.l - 2008-11-15 15:38

is that a tpr950?

r.o.y.a.l - 2008-11-15 15:39

have you ever has a radio that didn't auto-stop?

dont think i have.

jaredscottfla - 2008-11-15 15:52

My magnavox,my penney's don't have auto stop, but i think most of the better known brands do,reli if it's bothersome don't use it. simple. Wink

reli - 2008-11-15 16:09

Yes it's a TPR950. I'm just trying to figure out what's the purpose of it. Even if it DID have auto-stop ability, there's no need for a sleep switch, because if the tape auto-stopped then the whole box would be powered down at the same time. Notice in my picture how "tape" is shared with the same position as "power off". So if the tape's not playing, the box is powered off.

In my opinion the only reason to put a sleep switch on a box is if it had a built-in timer, where the radio would keep playing for 30-60 minutes and then shut off.

transwave5000 - 2008-11-17 21:06

Sleep timer on a Sanyo blaster I have turns off the radio after one hour.

I use it in case I forget to turn it off.

In this case it works with the LCD clock.
Another Sony blaster I have has an LCD clock with a sleep button.

viennasound - 2008-11-17 22:34

Yes, my PIONEER owns this function over the LCD clock. The cassette-sleep function i never used at any box of me.
Therefore it´s better to use a clockradio.
This one works also mechanical, and very well: Big Grin
