Flee market find

teamstress - 2008-11-01 19:23

Last Sunday I hit one of my usual hunting grounds, not expecting to find anything. I've only gotten one boomer there, of course it was a Tecsonic Super Jumbo, but you never know. So I wander into one booth and I spot, under a shelf, behind a guitar amp, laying on its back, on top of some other junk, a Sears and Roebuck SR-2100 series! Whoo-hoo! my first one with Vu meters! I didn't know if it worked but it was intact, not missing pieces, and not too filthy. So for $10 bought it.
Inspecting it further I realize the tuner indicator was just floating side to side, I figure no big deal it's just the string, I can fix that.
Okay now I get it home. I didn't even test it yet. I dive into it to work on the tuner. Turns out the string wasn't broken, it fell off the indicator. So just put the string back on, hook it back on the indicator, line up the station, and a drop of superglue and presto! good to go.
Also the main drive belt wasn't on the capstan pulley but wasn't broken so I just slipped it back into position.
Now the moment of truth. Plug it in turn it on and it worked great! Sounds awesome, even the tape works. Vu meters bouncing to the tunes!
Now I've rambled too much but I was too excited! Unfortunately I don't have a camera so no pictures, sorry!
Oh I almost forgot. Inside there was a mfgr sticker that said made by Toshiba Jan. 1984.

Thank for reading.

That's a great find, good to see she was all fixable too. It astounds me how often ghettos are thrown away because of simple fixes.. but it's awesome for cheap pick ups though. Non functioning tuners can be the result of some very bad problems, like my M-70's decayed polyvaricon, you never know til you open em up, really great that it was a nice easy fix.

Well done Teamstress.

Rock On.

Sweet, teamstress! That's the kind of story we all like to hear. Speaking of Sears 2100 series, my dad picked up one for me last week at a yard sale for $1.00! It the SR 2195 model which looks like this:

The one in the picture is not mine (just looks like it.)

Way to go. Big Grin I think you have the one piece that looks like the Sanyo with the sweep meters on the bottom. Is that right?

None of those are it. It's a model 2199. Vu's above the tape deck, norm, cro2, metal tape switch ; dolby and stereo wide switch. More than likely the top end of the Sears line.
It sounds great, really good bass without the annoying case vibrations. Pretty heavy too.

Cool Score and story Smile Not only does fixing them give you a great sense of accomplishment but it also adds sentimental value to your newly acquired Boomer. Add to that you can buy boxes with small problems and your in good shape to put together a collection Smile If I couldn't work on them at all I'd have about half the boxes I do just because I would be discouraged to buy anything that wasn't in 100% working order. Anyway Great job all around Smile The score the story and the repair
