this one?

You will be very pleased with the performance if it's in good working order. It's an oddball with no tuner and not running on batteries, but it has great performance for it's size.

isolator42 - 2008-06-13 06:32

no tuner or batteries? oddball indeed. Does it record, I wonder? Probably not. The label on the back says "cassette player" & the "PB" in the model number might denote PlayBack.

Perhaps it was aimed at record company A&R types for playing demo tapes, etc. To my mind it has a semi-pro look about it...

It seems to have line in (RCAs on the front) & I'll bet it sounds great for it's size. AC only stuff can afford to go to town on the amps. I think it says 45W power consumption on the back - that's plenty for some decent BTL amps.

Here's some info on it from the 'base:

No mention of recording capability. I wonder what the "dubbing function" is?
...& would you look at that price!

themightyrepairer - 2008-06-13 11:16

sweet thanks for the info.. looking at it i can see i will be very pleased with the biuld and sound.. cant wait till i get it.. i'll take some close up pics when it arrives..

themightyrepairer - 2008-06-19 09:55

ok i got it the other day.. cleaned it up a bit and checked out the biuld quality.. very impressed! very heavy also.. cassette plays great.. and for soft touch it starts playing immediately.. it has 2 motors.. and as you can see the internals are solid.. large heat sink and it has 2 output IC's.. wooden speaker cabinets.. and the face of the main unit is all aluminum.. here are some close up pics..

oh, this is a serious piece of kit. Would you look at that heatsink...

So, no aux in then?

ao - 2008-06-19 10:31

I've got a feeling it isn't old

themightyrepairer - 2008-06-19 13:33

aye there an aux in in the front of the unit on the bottom..

themightyrepairer - 2008-06-19 13:35

according to the inside stamp.. it was manufactured in 1981

ez - 2008-06-19 15:40

Can someone tell me what is the function of a heatsink? Thanks

skippy1969 - 2008-06-19 15:42

The heat sink (the thing with the fins) is used to cool the Amp circuit.

Noted!

Thanks Skipp

jvc.floyd - 2008-06-19 15:48

that is a big transformer almost as big as the one in the pc 55 ,i dont think i ever saw a box with a transformer as big as the pc 55 has,but the sony has that huge heatsink whick draws heat away from the output ic chips ,i like any box built as good as that sony is.

ah, I thought they were Aux Out, but now I see the label says "LINE OUT / AUX IN". What I don't understand is how it can work as both if it's only a player, not a recorder.
Any ideas?
Maybe when it's in play mode it feeds line out to these sockets & when switched on but not playing a tape they act as Aux in sockets?

you could be in for a long wait - it's the first time I've ever seen one of these. Anyone else?

themightyrepairer - 2008-06-20 02:24

only other person i know that had one of these is Bill (PanFan) i assume the Aux In/Out is voltage sensitive since i dont see any switching mech to activate it.. i got to be honest with you.. hearing this with the only cassette i have (an old country tape) i hate country hehe.. i will now buy some old cassettes.. thats how awesome sounding this unit is.. Bill was right about that.. i could possible fashoin a battery pack also since there is a 12 volt DC input..
