Emerson CTR 965

Picked this up yesterday and after about 10 minutes I was wishing I left it behind LOL

It's not the worst looking box ever but it's kind of small for what I want to collect. Size wasn't a huge concern but when I got it home and started to take it apart I found some nasty stuff. In the lower cabinet holes that house the screws to disassemble the box there was MUD caked in so badly that I had to keep the box hanging partially in the sink while sticking a wet screw driver in over and over till this mess was sorted. After about an hour of trying to get it apart and finally getting all the mud caked screws out it started to separate. Once the front and back started to come apart I got overly excited and started to pull at it (Guys don't ever lose your patience when working on a box LOL I snapped off both of the cassette door locks and now neither door was going to lock shut after reassembling. I was pretty livid at this point but wasn't going to just throw this thing in the trash. That got me thinking that maybe I would steel the one cassette door and attach it to my Lloyds box then part the rest of this thing out (Even though I'm pretty sure no one would want this thing LOL)

Then I called my wife at work and she said "Take your time and fix it, if it comes out like crap toss it and move on"

I agreed and started to work on it again. I glued the broken locks back on the tape mechs and took the box a little further apart so I could get at the speakers and grills. There was some old dried up foam that covered the front of the speakers making them look square. The foam was shot and all the glue had separated so I decided to remove it and maybe redo it. After removing everything I liked how it looked with the woofers showing and so I cut the plastic cross supports that the foam was attached to out and remove whatever glue was left behind.

Then I thought it would be cool to put a custom twist on it because it was a less valuable box and it would be fun. So I painted the grills and tuner knob that were in BAD shape bright red (maybe too bright)

I think it came out pretty cool ? What do you guys think ? Any of you do custom boxes now that they are collectable or is this a thing of the past ?

PS: this unit is still a POS and not much stuff is working on it but at least it will look OK in Pics LOL

I think it looks pretty fresh without grills too

I did the tuner knob but you can't see it in the pics

This is the other fun part of the hobby! "Turd Polishing 101" is a course offered as part of the s2g membership and it looks like you got an "A"! Big Grin Laugh Out Loud

Hmmm....a speaker change in order here... Wink

I think it looks rather good with the grilles off. I would paint the grilles black instead of red so it doesn't look too 'outrageous', and re-do the speaker cones black with marker pen. Then give those trims round the speakers a good clean and try to polish them, and put the black grilles on.
