to be (a boombox) or not to be

ned.209 - 2008-01-29 10:38

is this, a boombox

hifitom - 2008-01-29 10:45

I cannot see the picture!

Best wishes
TOM

ned.209 - 2008-01-29 11:07

sorry Tom, fixed it.

geoffhartwell - 2008-01-29 11:31

imho a bbox has to be able to take batteries, can this one take them? and has to have a carry handle?

ned.209 - 2008-01-29 11:31

yes Smile

beatbox - 2008-01-29 11:43

YES! Definitely yes!!

kid.sensation - 2008-01-29 11:50

Imagine, building this thing up in your city near the local mall.

EVERYONE will look at it and say "What a damn evil and big BOOMBOX!"

I voted "yes" too

r.o.y.a.l - 2008-01-29 11:54

is it actually portable in the position pictured , i.e in traditional three piece form ?

ned.209 - 2008-01-29 12:01

as in, does it have clips to hold the speakers on? good question, we should ask Zimmies, he has one

redbenjoe - 2008-01-29 12:04

royal -- its only portable in that form with :
some military bunji cords and 2 yards of industrial strength velcro --
because the speakers have no built in slots to snap into the center section --

but one member has cleverly added some custom hinges -- so then -- it can be done

billpc55 - 2008-01-29 12:21

ok. so i voted yes.
it isnt anything other than being a boombox. its a portable karoke machine a portable pa with a radio.
lets face it the features on it and basic shape are really the same idea as a m90 of a big sharp gf.
allthough some may not think it is a boombox. i am pretty sure if you showed up with it at a party 99 percent of the people there would call it a boombox.
i mean its a boombox without a doubt.
i mean there is a folding sony with a similar design wich seems to be pretty well accepted as being a boombox.
its a boombox without a doubt.
its really cool and loud i bet.

litfan - 2008-01-29 13:58

It`s crap.

oldskool69 - 2008-01-29 14:09

For those who say this isn't a boombox what about Sony FH Series above the 5? Confused

litfan - 2008-01-29 14:13

Also crap

jovie - 2008-01-29 15:18

Personally I feel a boombox needs to be able to be used with the speakers attached if they are removable. If someone fits hinges to attach the speakers so this can be done, they have turned it into a boombox by definition. If not,to me it is a shelf system that takes batteries, has a carry handle, and can be fitted together in a modular fashion to transport it more easily.

This is a good topic to discuss. The definition of a boombox has to be pinned down by collectors in retrospect as blurring of product lines and marketing have left the term too vague.

My vote is "NO" it is not a boombox as pictured.

redbenjoe - 2008-01-29 15:25

technically -- jovie is the 'most right' (imho)

moncheeto - 2008-01-29 15:37

i would say jovie is right look at it as the sony cfs-88 or any simular box that fit that description

The answer would be no.

There is no point to this poll Ned. It is a fact that it is not a boombox. Not designed, built, or marketed as such.

Not everything that runs on batteries is a boombox.

oldskool69 - 2008-01-29 15:51

After reading the considerations I hereby retract my yes vote. BUT what of others that have speakers that attach but DON'T take batteries? Or systems like the Carryin Compo, El Poco, or recently (in another thread) discussd Hitachi that is similar in execution. Confused

I still feel this is a worthy topic and a good poll idea.I agree Pan Fan that it is not a boombox but it's interesting to see how many feel that way.Personally I don't think it matters what it was marketed as originally.Marketing descriptions are meant to sell products. For example-If a company thought it would not benefit their product, they could have certainly not used the term though it was in fact a boombox.Alternately, even if it was not, they could have used the term boombox.I feel the definition needs to be clarified and people educated. Thanks for bringing this up NED!YOU da' MAN!

No battery power, not a boombox. There are many products in the database that are not technically boomboxes.

litfan - 2008-01-29 16:13

RX? Wink.

billpc55 - 2008-01-29 17:27

if it doesnt run on batteries i would say no as well.
i do think its pretty cool looking but if it doesnt run on batteries i would have to say no as well.

moncheeto - 2008-01-29 19:47

So..... we can call anything that we want a boombox? Everything that is/and/or has a handle, can run on batteries, makes noise, etc.?

Unless you are going to hire 2 extra midgets to carry the speakers around for you, it isn't even portable in a usable way.

The only thing that puts it remotely into the category of a boombox is that it does run on batteries..... and so do some clock radios.

If my clock radio runs on batteries, is that a boombox too?

enskanker - 2008-01-30 05:49

Yes in theory we can call anything a boombox, as its all temporary.

In the world of the material nothing is what it is named.

A boombox is not the word boombox.

Indeed. The Hitachi 3D7 was marketed as a "High Performance Portable Creative Three Dimensional Sound System"

That's just my point.Unless the definition is pinned down, you can call it anything you want.It is certainly not all about batteries or a handle. Those are just a couple of features of a boombox. The problem comes when trying to establish what other features it must have. There is obviously disagreement on this.As I said, manufacturers could and can call these things anything they want.If you want a definition with any continuity you can't rely on what manufacturers chose (or choose) to call them.

peter.griffin - 2008-01-30 13:41

didn't know the speakers aren't connected in any way to the body. But I still wouldn't pass one upSmile

litfan - 2008-01-30 13:58

I would. It`s rubbish.

oldskool69 - 2008-01-30 14:02

OK. Let's go from here...

1. Must be portable. It can weigh a ton, but portable is still portable. That means a handle of some sort.

2. Batteries. Be it a power pack or D-Cells.

3. Speakers must be carried with the unit. And ready for play, i.e. You dont have to open it and set it up. Speakers can detach, but when assembled travel open faced with the unit.

4. Shape. Boomboxes have always came in various forms so let's not limit it here. (Except maybe the truly weird.)

5. They must BOOM! Yeah that Durabrand in the Wal-Mart may be shilled as a boombox, but c'mon! Laugh Out Loud

enskanker - 2008-01-30 14:16

Litfan I love it when you use the word ...'rubbish'
