Howz the Title and Community Points formulated?

superduper - 2011-02-17 00:59

# of posts was easy to figure out.  I see that each member now has community points and a title.  How are those formulated and what's behind the various titles?

The formula behind the community points is a secret.  These points are gained by performing different actions on the site.

Karma titles are 'earned' designations based on a user's activity in the community.  Points are earned for posts and comments made in the community, as well as other activities.  We're open to suggestions but for now, they're set as:

<100:    Newbie
100-499:    Intermediate
500-1999:  Advanced
2000+:  Pro

Ok.  Thanks.

I've now somehow managed to accrue over 100,000 community points, but what is the purpose of having these points?

Besides, the Karma titles are relatively meaningless if points are 'earned' without purpose or reasoning.

While it does not apply here now, in the future points could unlock features of the site that would not be open to other users.

For now, the titles have little meaning except to distinguish levels of experiences between users.  We had karma points on the old site as well, but they too served no purpose.
