Show us your Sony's

ao - 2011-02-19 03:10

Sony are the undisputed kings of the Walkman arena but what was it about their designs that failed to embrace the Boombox community?  Personally I love Sony designs but could you imagine LL Cool J in obligatory 'bad boy' pose draped over a CFS-88?

So, let's see what you've got.  Here's my CFS-900s Rhythm Capsule for starters...

geoffhartwell - 2011-02-19 03:58

this is the only sony i have, cfs 81, im prob going to sell it as i dont have room for it

redbenjoe - 2011-02-19 04:12

finally - last week -got this one

redbenjoe - 2011-02-19 04:25

and this little fella is swell

brigadier.vytas - 2011-02-19 04:26

My Sony CFS 65S after some heavy restoration. Not a Ladies Love Cool James calibre at all, but still nice, i think.

ao - 2011-02-19 04:42

Ira, that CFS-7 looks tasty, what's the bit that looks like an LCD display above the left speaker?

redbenjoe - 2011-02-19 04:46

cris - its a power lamp and a single vu meter

wow agent o, Look at the cassette buttons they were placed on the other side of the cassette never seen anything like that, looks pretty cool, packed with all sort of controls. nice one.

ao - 2011-02-19 07:25

Driptrip, those aren't the cassette buttons, these are controls for 'effects' eg Bosonaova, Samba etc.  This beast has a drum machine built into into plus a input jack for your elec guitar.

beatlesfire - 2011-02-19 12:24

Here is mine Sony CF-580.

driptip - 2011-02-19 12:38

wow thats a nice one man, looks minty, i've seen those in the wild but pretty beat up.
yours look amazing.

thats true Agent , my bad, now it looks more interesting.

beatlesfire - 2011-02-19 12:42

It was beaten up when I found it, i made it look like a brand new.
It cost me some time and extra parts.

driptip - 2011-02-19 12:51

wow great job man,  and yes it looks new.

ao - 2011-02-19 13:59

Indeedy, one of the  nicer Sonys

litfan - 2011-02-19 15:24

Agreed. The 580, is a little stunner. I was going to post a pic of my cfs-f40, but, i can`t find the photo. This box, has to be heard to be believed. I thought the m90 was king, till i heard this thing.

retro - 2011-02-19 16:38

Here are some images Litfan.

nevone - 2011-02-20 15:13

Here-s my Sony (CFS 88L) :

driptip - 2011-02-20 15:27

that sony f40 is just amazing, never seen one before, are those radiators at the bottom of the speakers? and it looks pretty heavy and deep, nothing like the 580 from the 70's but it looks very well made.

an the cfs88  one of my favs, still looking for one of them.

beatlesfire - 2011-02-20 20:31

I actually always wanted this:

ao - 2011-02-20 23:16

I always fancied the CFS-D7

litfan - 2011-02-21 03:34

The old D7 eh. Doesn`t sound very spectacular cris. Hugo, yeah, they are passive radiators. This must be the heaviest box, at around 14kg. 2 more than the gf777. Makes a good breeze block.

I used to have one of those years ago. That one's built like a tank. Nice solid box for sure. It sounds good too for something so small and running on just 6 batteries.

fresh.produce - 2011-02-21 14:19

Heres some of my sonys

litfan - 2011-02-21 14:46

A cfs77 eh. Nice one. Great sounding box this one.

beatlesfire - 2011-02-21 16:54

Love this one too:
Sony CFS-F5

litfan - 2011-02-23 14:40

Yeah, that`s another good one. Swine to dismantle though.

driptip - 2011-02-23 15:34

nice one beatlesfire, i like the way you can hide the cassette buttons on this one, like the ones on the d7, not the greatest sounding machine but still good for what it is.
i would love to get me a mint one.

my D7

retro.addict - 2011-02-24 17:00

I don't have any Sony's left. I've had a CFS-71L, a CFS-W301L and CFS-1000L, but they all went ages ago.

I didn't realise that the CFS-77 was so much bigger than the CFS-500!

Very nice CF-580 you've got Beatlesfire.  i'll be entering mine in a radio show contest next month, Sony catagory. The competition  will be tough though since Sony made so many great products.

Here's something I wrote not long ago on these. Anyone who owns one knows how nice they are....

Yeah, these are superb boxes.  Never seen a fully functioning one, actually, I've never seen one.

ao - 2011-11-10 01:37

I've got another Sony mono somewhere and it really does sound better than any Sony stereo unit I've heard, big meaty bass, almost a RC-550 killer

bison - 2011-11-10 04:21

sony cfs

ao - 2011-11-10 05:00

'Only got this'  ha, that is the classic Sony mid-size 70s box.  Hang onto that one.

I have a Sony CF-580 aswell which i have owned since about 1980 i got in a flee market not working, some one had put it on 110v setting and plugged it into the 240v supply here in the uk, fortunately it was only the mains transformer that was gone.

I fitted a more beefy toroidal transformer (I often find mains transformers in portables are weedy and often replace them with higher current versions).

I then upgraded the electrolytic caps in the signal paths to audio grade ones (Expensive but worth it), and re-wired the speaker circuit with 42 strand cable (again worth the work).

This in a way is my favourite machine in my collection because it so well built, and though it is not a pin you against the wall blaster it produces very good listenable sound through all inputs.

CF-580
