New TDK retro box/speaker system

rpm1200 - 2011-03-30 10:45

My friend let me know about the TDK TP6803BLK, it's part of a retro line TDK is coming out with. It's a bit steep at $500 and has an iPod interface, auxiliary input and tuner.

I think it looks great, what do you think?

looks like a quality unit, I went down to Best Buy to take photos and videos of the box in action, but it was online only at the time. Is this he first box that takes 12 "D" cells?

Not only that, it easily weighs over 30 pounds, i'll try again during the week.

OK , i also don't  agree with the minimalist front panel, but those dual concentric mid-bass drivers and multi function knobs caught my attention. What's ironic is, I recently completed a Nakamichi Dragon boom box 3d rendering with two multi function knobs. a minimalist display, and a similar touch screen panel. And this was a few months ago

I'll post it when i get a chance...It's an unusual three piece though.

I just checked the website, it's powered by 12 D cells. The manual is available for download. http://www.tdkperformance.com/...oombox-Audio-System/

Nice one Retro...Hopefully they will sell it over this side of the pond..Altho I dont like mp3 this should be good for powering up the old walkman ..put some grilles on there and we should be in buisness

Bass and treble controls. Nice.

There's a USB jack so you can plug in a flash drive or whatever, but why no SD card slot?

It's just MP3 and WMA too. No FLAC or WAV support, unfortunately.

Not sure if it would work, but there are plenty of cheap and compact SD/SDHC to USb adapters like the one pictured below.

That's a great idea.

I hate to be so negative, but I'd be worried about bumping it into something and causing serious damage. I still occasionally lug one around ( and yes sometimes people look at me like I'm insane, but I've had some interesting conversations as well), and I'm not exactly the most graceful person, so anything sticking out (including plugs) makes me nervous.

I can easily see banging into something and braking the jack off of the circuit board, or even worse breaking the board itself.

I'd absolutely love to have something modern and digital that sounds good to take out and about. As it is I've been taking the new Lasonic out and it's alright, but I can't help but long for something better. It would be killer to have something new that's comparable audio-wise to the better boxes of the past.

It looks like they had the right idea here, and I have to admit I'm tempted, but I can see a bashed in speaker cone and boken jack in my future sould I get one of them.

I see that Kmart has this listed on their website as well. That seems odd, but its still 499.00.
