M90 tweeter upgrade

mellymelsr - 2011-05-31 23:22

I was listening to my M90 recently and all of a sudden the treble went flat on one side. The left tweeter wasn't producing any sound and I feared I had a major problem on my hands. I called Norm and he gave me a simple technique to test all the speakers individually to isolate the problem. Lucky for me the problem was a blown tweeter.

I ordered a new set of 2 3/4" Sony tweeters from Parts Express. The originals were 6 ohm 20 watt max. The replacements are 8 ohm 70 watt max. The shape and design of the Sony tweeters are an exact match for the JVC tweets, so they fit perfectly. My concern was how would the sound be affected? Looking at the front side the paper used for the Sony tweeter looks and feels much more solid than the JVC's so I was hoping that quality would mean better sound.

I went over to Norms for some quick surgery and before you could say "M90" he had the new tweeters installed. We installed the chassis and fired her up. I was pleasantly surprised and kind of shocked that these Sony tweets sound better, have more detail, and deliver the sound more smoothly. I never thought I could make the M90 sound better but these tweeters make a big difference in the mid to upper range sound reproduction.

There is a small downside...these tweets have gloss black centers so they are hard to see through the tweeter grill. Other than that the rest is all upside!! The M90 sounded great before but now the detail is truly fantastic. I would recommend these tweeters to anyone looking to replace or upgrade there M90 tweeters. Here are some pics of the tweets and the finished product...

Thats a beautifull rasdio melly, its a shame about the Jvc tweeters, they look really nice..i've repaired tweeters before, when they go,its usually a break in the coil, normally the break is between the main coil and the terminal, and its wafer thin..you could try carefully cutting the tweeter round the outer edge, peel the cone back and have a look..or,if all fails, try removing the silver dust caps from the old tweeters and fix them to the new ones..silver dust caps, black dust caps, its still a beauty.

It's a shame you couldn't find original replacements, but you do what you can to keep the beast in working condition. At least you can still enjoy your JVC. She's a beaut.

Nice job mell...ya should have just painted the centre of the tweeter...that's what i do when things don't match,,,,good job though...nice to see her up and running again...

Fantastic Job!

A stupid question from a repair novice...would the JVC PC 550's tweeters worked in lieu of the Sony's. I only say this because I know they have a chrome cap and being JVC it would make sense from a manufacturing standpoint to crossover components.

I've also seen 550 speakers being sold on Ebay recently

Not sure if the 550 tweeter is the same size, but I would need 2 donor 550's to do that as I replaced both tweeters. Also the updated tweeter has more wattage handling capabilities and better sound so I am quite pleased with the results. Plus I saved the old tweeter so I could always cut out the chrome center caps but I like the stealth look of the all black tweeters and definitely like the improved sound.
