sharp gf-5454

bison - 2011-06-09 09:18

found a gf-5454 today for a fiver, well pleased with it but not happy about the sunlight damage to the cassette deck buttons, ive seen these online with chrome buttons, has anyone tried to rectify this problem by chroming parts  themselves,i was thinking of giving it a go,theres some pretty good chrome spray paint out there.

i had a 5454 too, they sound good, better than you would think..my tape keys were slightly discoloured, but i just left them because they were'nt too bad,but i think the best thing to do is take the box apart, take the deck out, unclip the keys, and get a tin of silver/grey car spray, give them i light coat, the leave them 10 minutes,do it again, keep doing it and build the layers up slowly,i think it will look ok after that..the yellowing is perminent so spraying them is the only way..

thanks for the advice,i do graffiti so i have access to different types of spray paint.

gonna give it a go.had a choice today of three boxes and choose the sharp, there was a pretty good ferguson box there aswell, gonna go back for it.

not a bad little box the 5454 BISON congrats, seem as though your a manchester lad, get to afflecks palace there,s sometimes the odd box for sale in their.

there,s also ryans vintage on oldham road in the city too, there,s a few boxes in there mate up on the shelf.

their not usually for sale in ryan,s but i blagged a nice hitachi 8600 out of the guy once, i had to pay a ton for it but it was worth it.

just a thought for you to consider mate, by the way love your avvy, i love graffiti art myself it looks so cool

thanks, not been in afflecks for years, used get all kinds from there, only really been doing the boot sales and the odd flea market, ebay prices are a joke and charity shops price stuff pretty high too.

lav.loo - 2011-06-09 12:41

ye i know, i do the odd car boots but not much around these days unfortunately, most charity shops don,t do electrics anymore, and like you say ebay prices are a joke.

boxes are gettin rarer by the day

yeah, charity shops dont sell electrical stuff because they have no way of testing anything, the missus used to work in one, didnt stop the guy in charge taking donated stuff home.i know of two one on the a6 stockport and one in wythenshawe that sell the odd box, pricey though.

yeah the buttons on my sanyo m7900 are actually a gold colour-now its not nicotine staining because the gold is almost metallic!-dont tell me someones sprayed the deck keys on mine!!!!!

andyboombox - 2011-06-25 02:38

dont tell me about pricey charity shops!!!!!when i last volunteered a few weeks ago at the heart foundation in barnsley, they had a crappy late 80s samsung 3 piece box-you know the one-cheap,crappy plastic and a tacky digital tuner..........they wanted £25 for it!yes you heard me right.i told them you must be having a laugh, but the boss there now is just money-hungry...........ive had a gf525 from there for a tenner in the past!another mate of mine had a gf500 for a tenner too!over at the pontefract store they are just as bad-they had a blue piddly little maximal 80s portable radio-only but made to look like a boombox, for a tenner!!!!!ive had a gf9090 from there in the past-£7.50,an 8585 for £8,and a gorgeous jvc rc 656 for £10.but nowadays, when they very very rarely turn up,they just ask what they want!it wouldnt surprise me to find something like a middle of the road model in there now for any less than £50!a few weeks back i paid a fiver for a ferguson-original price was a tenner.....scandalous!and as for ebay.....i wish it would just crash and never come back.its been the death of in the wild boxes for sure.its all on its arse.
