Questions about the Panasonic RX-CS780

retro.addict - 2011-09-19 12:35

Hi,

There is one of these 780s for sale locally. I'm really tempted to buy it tomorrow. It's in minty condition.

Does it have a 'proper' line-in?

For members who have both: How well does it perform against the Panasonic RX-CT900?

Also, what's the general opinion of this model?

A pic of one...

Thanks fellow boomers.

radio.raheem - 2011-09-19 14:51

It's much better than the one you have RA panasonic at it's best...and i do belive it has line in....good luck

retro.addict - 2011-09-19 16:06

Thanks for the reply raheem.

Now I feel really bad for leaving it today. I really hope it's still there tomorrow, I'm going to get there first thing!!  Wish me more luck!

radio.raheem - 2011-09-19 16:30

More luck RA...this is the only line of boombox that I consider....better than the m90...at times...quite seriously RA...if only they were as loud....and silver...

Panasonic RX-CS780 - don't know

Own (just-one) Panasonic RX-DT680 -has single-cd; don't have dolby an metal tape select, is maybe same size as Panasonic RX-CS780 - probally sound about the same? ( guessing 'DT'= Double-Tape )

The Panasonic RX-DT680 is louder and bigger size wise than the Panasonic RX-CT900, but can't play cd's in a Panasonic RX-CT900 Boombox's cause this dont have a cd-player & most cd players in a boombox skip at higher volume's played & we dont have many cd's either..  Only bought the Panasonic RX-DT680 to hear the difference of sound that there was/is so much blather about and now that we have one - Wished - we had never bothered with the RX-DT680 - we prefer the Panasonic RX-CT900 Overall in these line-up of Three-piece boombox's by Panasonic.

Own (2) Panasonic RX-CT900-[ has line-in ]but-no-cd-player; Has dolby an metal tape select, Is More compact than Panasonic RX-DT680 - is larger - maybe somewhat louder?  We LIKE this RX-CT900 Model, even have one with the original box...

We don't like to play cd's in a boombox cause NONE of them have Enough Power to play back the 'Digital' Music...

You need to play a cd ? get a cd player...

I'll be gracious, Reno, and let you win this.

I prefer to use the Panasonic RX-CT900 as the workarea boombox as it is just the right size for being there. Not interested in How Loud these are inside, as much as interested in How well this sounds at a low to moderate volume as this Panasonic RX-CT900 sit's on a shelf above the worktable. The Panasonic RX-CT900 Sound's fine at low volume's & is Terrific in this application, on the shelf.

If I need to Rock the House then I turn on the HOME Stereo JVC RX-884VBK 130 watts x5 and a powered 200watt 12 inch subwoofer with two Acoustic 58s, 2 home-made couch end speakers, and a Yamaha NS-AC141 center channel speaker.  I can get fairly deaf cranking this up ok...

radio.raheem - 2011-09-19 21:37

no one wins james..it's just our own opinion my friend I do have an old aiwa amp wich is suposed to be 170 w rms pc though x4...needless to say it never gets used...apart from on headphones

BTW james...i wish my m75 would show up...im sick of waiting for the bloody thing...I hope it's as good as they say...wich i somehow doubt..

retro.addict - 2011-09-20 02:40

GOT IT!

Just tried it out and found there's no control to switch the S-XBS (extra bass) on and off like the RX-CT900 has (in effect, a loudness switch). It has a knob which controls how much bass is produced. I must say that at this point the box is a bit of a let down. The graphic equalizer does a good job, but S-XBS control only makes a slight difference when off or full on. Is this normal for these boxes? At this point I'm thinking the RX-CT900 sounds a lot better than this model. Where is the oomph from these two amplifiers?

radio.raheem - 2011-09-20 03:08

set the bass (100hz) on the graphic to half...and the xbs all the way...then let us know...if you set the 100 hz to full...yes the xbs has no effect....if you dont like it...we can always do a deal

Tried it, and you're 100% correct! The bass is better with the 100hz slider half way up and the S-XBS level all the way up. I think the S-XBS control needs some contact cleaner though. I will see to that.

The boombox does have one problem, the cassette player works brilliantly and sounds awesomely clear, but the thing is, the 'direction' feature doesn't work properly. When the lever is pressed down, the cassette mechanism seizes up and makes squeeling noises. I've watched inside when this happens and the head tries to spin round but gets stuck part way. I have to stop and start the mechanism a few times to get it to play in the other direction. When the mechanism does play in the other direction, there is no sound from the cassette. It's not a problem for me, because I only play cassettes in the 'conventional' way.

radio.raheem - 2011-09-20 15:44

Do you still think the other boomer is better RA...if so i must get one....i had the twin cassette one yrs ago, brand new, and loved it but i foolishly sold it...had the one with twin cassette and cd a few yrs ago and sold that...as i diddn't like it...

retro.addict - 2011-09-20 16:17

As I don't have the 900 (twin cassette) here with me, I can't try out both together just yet. I think they sound very much alike (especially if some contact cleaner in the 780's S-XBS control improves the bass a bit more), but the 780 certainly looks a lot better, at least it's more symmetrical. In fact, I love how it looks!

radio.raheem - 2011-09-20 16:27

Well...now you have a better box than most m90's just not as loud...like i said wish it was silver...the one in your title is rated at 60w pmpo..and your new one 80w pmpo...ohh you need new belts...i have had a few of them...and they make that awful sqeaky noise you speak of...
