andyboombox - 2011-10-24 03:10

hey guys, did realistic ever make this unit for the uk market,ie through tandy stores, thus making it available in the uk?if yes/no how easy is it to aquire one????

- 2011-10-24 03:36

well basicly what you are doing here ( asking ) - That is the Good thing.

as far as the SCR-8 making itself to the uk as another brand am not so sure or dont remember the crossove brand/model number

or if you can afford it get one from the USA from those that have one

litfan - 2011-10-25 12:26

It was "realistic" in the UK. I think, i remember seeing that model in a tandy catalogue. Good old tandy.

litfan - 2011-10-25 12:30

The scr-8 is a stunning looking box. I always thought Realistic was an American make, was it actually Tandys own make? like how Dixons had Sashio etc?

I used to love going in Tandy as a kid, i was a sucker for the soft ejects on all those stereos in there

Is the Radio-Shack Store's in the USA ,,, Called ( Tandy ) in the UK United Kingdom - Cause i dont know what you are referring to as 'Tandy'?

Realistic I always thought was simply a Refabrication of the same ,,, uh,,,

GE or Sanyo or Panasonic or whatever Popular brand that Radio-Shack desired to Sell under Their Name of "Realistic"

Which is why here is seen the Two similar box's with different cosmetic's and the tuning know an power switch in different colcations but essentially the Same box's and Even the Same Sound Characterisic's of the GE versus the Realistic as I showed the Radio on in the above picture + Cassette Works Very well.

For me it's a too-up between both model's as I like that the Realistic has Loops for adding a shoulder-strap, ge nope.  GE has More of a open design Reaslitic look's older

Realsitic has Cheaper Led power meter's, GE has VU meters.  GE is Silver in color, Realistic is grey/green in color or drabby looking...

If I had to chose between these 2, I would chose the GE First.

Finally am perfectly content with selling all Four of these I have 3 of the ge's and 1 of the Realistic as you see it here

...It's for sale you know....

... did you pm a offer ?

along with all the rest of these seen and not seen boombox's

radio.raheem - 2011-10-26 17:34

Love the led's but i bet they dont sound any better than a sharp gf8989

erniejade - 2011-10-26 19:06

More bass then the 8989 and I think a bit clearer and not as tinny sounding to me.   BUT, remember sound is all subjective to the person.

radio.raheem - 2011-10-26 19:15

Thanks EJ

isolator42 - 2011-10-27 07:15

I'm sure that one was sold by Tandy in the UK, as their flagship boomer 1983-84 ish. I don't know the model number, unfortunately. I'd expect it to be pretty rare in the UK, as Tandy were quite expensive when compared to Dixons & Comet.

Someone I know had one & he reported the sound to be surprisingly solid - Tandy weren't considered top choice in the UK (at least not around my way).

ghettoman - 2011-10-27 10:00

i used to go in to tandy alot in the 80s iso,i cant recall seeing any of those realistic,but..i dont think they stocked the higher end boomboxes,i think they would more likely to be stocked in london ect..the main things i used to see in my local tandy is the huge speakers and disco equipment..

hey iso,do you remember the weird way they sold their stuff e.g speakers, alot of the bigger speakers they never sold them as a pair, they always sold them in singles,i would look and see the prices, and thought "whoa thats cheap for a set of huge speakers" but when you looked closer it would say "each" very odd !

As for the the realistic box,i would have one just for the lights, those led's are just crazy !! are those lights fixed VU's or do they increase and decrease with the volume ?

Funny you should say that. I was browsing here:

http://www.radioshackcatalogs.com/catalogs/1984/

& sure enough, the old "each" pricing on the speakers foxed me again - just like old times

erniejade - 2011-10-28 07:13

Realistic actually had some decent receivers in the day.  the sta 2000 2100 were nice.  Some were made from Pioneer and some were foster made.   the foster made ones were very underrated and sounded darn good.

erniejade - 2011-10-28 07:19

take a look at the 2100D and the 2000    both were great sounding units.   even the prior version of the 2100 without the d sounded great.

It was worth registering just for that. Thanks!

I sent a message to BoomboxCassette2Go via YouTube recently as a long shot to see what my chances might be to purchase one. Now that I have this info, I'll be EXTRA careful.
