Can someone ID this Sony...

davelc2 - 2011-11-19 18:15

I was at a thrift store today and I saw this in the back room. I guess it's being processed. I will check back in a day or two. I've never seen this one before in my time searching for boomboxes. Does anyone know anything about it? It looks like late 80's early 90's if I had to guess.

SONY CFS-700

James

davelc2 - 2011-11-19 18:35

Wow that sounds really cool! I just saw some pics of it. I like the way it looks. I'll go back tomorrow and see if they have a price on it. Their prices are kinda all over the place but they do have really good sales through out the week.

Dave

davelc2 - 2011-11-19 18:47

Thanks too James. I will try yo pick up this tomorrow. I've never actually seen one before. I have a Sony CFS-9000 and two others that I've never seen before too. I've never really been a big Sony fanatic but these unique models intrigue me.

davelc2 - 2011-11-20 13:21

Well I went back & learned that they are using it to listen to. So after talking to an employee I will come back tomorrow with a mint Panasonic RX-DT610 that I'm not too attached to. I will first see if I can trade it & if not I will see if I can donate it to purchase the Sony. It looks pretty clean aside from a bent antenna.

am not instantly familiar with Your trade - just as long as it is either the same size or a bit bigger but not too big and basically all things somewhat similar - unless you have a better gauge of the people there you should be able to make a trade straight accross with no $ involved

davelc2 - 2011-11-20 15:39

It is a bit bigger but it also has a cd player which I'm hoping will peak their interest. It's fully functional & is in near mint if not mint cond. thanks for the tips.

Again James is here...too

isolator42 - 2011-11-21 05:07

The panasonic will also sound alot better - i have one & it sounds pretty special, all things considered. It's the cheaper end of the 3pc RX-DTs (it's no 680/690) but it's a long way from a disappointment.

I undwerstand why you're not too attached to it - it looks a bit plasticky & it's not top of the line. I only have one 'cos it's my bother's old boomer & therefore has sentimental value.

redbenjoe - 2011-11-21 05:21

agree with paul -

the little sony sounds good-

but the panny is a bit better

its a worthwhile trade for both parties

davelc2 - 2011-11-21 05:28

Don't get me wrong, I like it but if I get something unique I'm totally game. I don't think it's worth much & I got a got deal on it about 4 or 5yrs ago. I picked it up in SF off of CL.

need a bit of TLC ...

davelc2 - 2011-11-22 20:02

Too funny. I'll probably see them all over now that I've seen one. So I went back to the thrift store today as I had to work OT yesterday. I talked to the store manager & they were already expecting me lol One of the employee's had already spoke to the manager for me. We were unable to do a straight trade so I had to go to plan B. I donated my Panasonic & I was able to buy the CFS-700 for a few cents more than my drink at Starbucks I'm very happy with the deal. I've only just got home & had dinner so I'm now about to plug it in and have a listen. The tape deck does not work but I expected that already. Pics to come soon.

Dave

redbenjoe - 2011-11-22 20:13

nice going , dave -

i predict you will really like the sound -

and --i kind of remember that it has an aux-in

davelc2 - 2011-11-22 21:29

It's kinda late so I'm not able to really turn it up but I can tell that it will have a rich sound when I get to crank it up. I am surprised how heavy it is for it's smallish size. Here's one pic. I will post more when I get a chance to clean it up. It doesn't sound quite as rich as my Klipsch iPod/iPhone docking station but it's not a fair comparission as the docking station is bi-amped.

Dave

redbenjoe - 2011-11-22 21:32

looks like its in beautiful condition -- yes !!!!!!

davelc2 - 2011-11-22 22:43

It's all there with dust and all. There doesn't appear to be anything missing and the antenna is pretty straight. All of my tapes along with most of my stuff is in storage but the deck looks like it would play. Maybe it plays slow. I have to grab a tape to check it out.

isolator42 - 2011-11-22 23:49

Mmm, nice

Reminds me of a 'grown-up' ZX-7, which lost some features along the way (Dolby, APM speakers) & gained some (Bass Boost, swivelly speakers). Probably more use in the real world, TBH.

Nice that it's a quality Sony. They did make some cheap & nasty stuff in the Decline & Fall era...

radio.raheem - 2011-11-23 05:48

I like it...reminds me of the akai pj33....congrats dave c2....who needs black boxes anyway

isolator42 - 2011-11-23 06:18

Funny you should say that Tim - it reminds me of a smaller Akia I have tucked away somewhere. I bought it from Penge - top bloke from somewhere on the English Riviera...

Ah yes, the PJ11.

Swivelly speakers, batteries fit into the speaker enclosures, slightly bonkers layout à la Akia, but some good toys: 3 band EQ, Aux-in...

Some good pics of it here:

radio.raheem - 2011-11-23 06:44

I have one of those massive akai paul lad,,,ajc1 based on a similar idea as the pj 33.....it's far to big and because of this its too big and clumzy....sadly its scrap in my shed.....if it's still there...belts are long gone....shame as it was actually louder than the m90...but diddn't sound as good though...

that akai of yours....i had something similar.....sounded realy nice (bought it of royal yrs ago) it's long gone now though....

radio.raheem - 2011-11-23 07:07

here is a pic of the akai similar to yours paul.....

Tim: Akia were always way out there with their designs, eh?

Cris: Penge's place is nicer than that... although that's not really saying much

ao - 2011-11-23 20:25

Sorry, not a slur on Penge's place, I just liked the thought of the English Riviera

isolator42 - 2011-11-23 23:55

Aah, we know you of old Cris, none taken I'm sure.
I got the phrase from Fawlty Towers...

I'll bet you miss this septic Isle, don't you?

ao - 2011-11-24 00:18

I do find myself needing to refresh my memory from time to time but I don't hide from the fact that we'll return one day.  I miss crap English food and decent quality tradesmen.

isolator42 - 2011-11-24 01:57

Crap English food?

Got a Pot Noodle lined up for lunch, with plenty of Heinz Ketchup, oh yes.

Good quality tradesmen?

Having a new gas cooker installed today. Geting the delivery guy to talk to the gas installation guy is like bloody ALCHEMY. ...& somehow it's my problem?

I confidently expect the house to be off mains gas for at least a week when those two geniuses have finished.

Well 'YOU' 'are' having a new gas cooker installed today - so Yes - it's your

isolator42 - 2011-11-24 02:35

I didn't explain properly. The whole service (purchase, delivery, decommission, removal, installation) is supposed to be being provided by the people we bought the cooker from.

It's the good old British 'service' industry at it's finest - i.e. bloody shambolic.

well we have the same service's here provided by either the local merchants or the national chains givin the exact same service as you describe - Luckily here all we have here is " all electric " and the hot water is on a central boiler 'gas fired' system.

isolator42 - 2011-11-24 03:14

Oh, it's all developing nicely.

The delivery guy who is apparently supposed to take the old cooker away, has delivered a shiny new cooker & buggered off (never to be seen again, probably).

The decommission/installation engineer (who has to be Corgi registered by law, otherwise I'd do the bloody lot myself) still hasn't even turned up.

Soonest they can come & collect the old one will be on Saturday. How convenient.

Bunch of twunts.

I see in my future, a series of shoutly phone calls followed by a refund...

oh-boy.... and then if .... you actually go through the refund route... you can probably expect this very same level of ( duck's in a row ) LOL Service in REVERSE to go back to the beginning of ?  I wish You Well in your endeavor with this

isolator42 - 2011-11-24 03:40

Service in the UK is so bad, you get to a point where you almost enjoy how much of a cock-up is made of things.

I think I'll wait until the new cooker has been successfully installed before I kick off. It should be done in a couple of hours.

Then, in the words of Bill the bard, "Cry havoc & let slip the dogs of war"

...& all that

ghettoman - 2011-11-24 04:14

The service from most companies in uk is so bad,the best thing to do if you want something done is just do it yourself, and if you do try and get any assistance, they usually cock it up..and getting any help is none existant, best thing to do its fart and moan and just take it up the tail pipe lol..

isolator42 - 2011-11-24 04:53

Agree Beanie Man.

If there weren't laws preventing me from installing a gas appliance, I'd do it myself & never pay these idiots a penny. It's a piece of cake.

Switch off gas at meter box > clear remaining gas > unscrew old cooker supply > attach supply to new cooker > switch on gas. Not exactly brain surgery...

saxonman - 2011-11-25 00:48

thats funny really if you do that yourself you will break the law and go inside !! but if you was to assault the bloke doing it you would proberly get a warning isn't english law funny!! anyhow that sony is soo good it is sooo different love it !!

radio.raheem - 2011-11-25 00:55

one of my mates did it himself and said nothing....alwasy the best way

ghettoman - 2011-11-25 01:18

same as when i was with my ex,you are supposed to have a corgy registered dude to all your gas appliances,we always changed our cooker and connected our new one up ourselves, all we had to do is buy a new connector because the new cooker used a different fitting from the old one,if you connect your new cooker up just remember to use some PTFE Tape to make a better seal..feck paying some professional that will only do the same as you would anyway..but the difference is he will want £100 to do a job you could do for nothing..

isolator42 - 2011-11-25 03:04

On the downside, I had no choice - wife not happy with me fitting a gas appliance (& me with my decades of experience in the I.T. industry...)

On the upside, I wasn't paying

New oven now installed, however the bloody thing doesn't work properly - seems to be a fault with the actual oven that the genius whio fitted it had overlooked. Engineer booked for Monday, allegedly. Whoever he is, he's lucky I'll be miles away at work. I'm about ready to do something quite uneccessary...

ao - 2011-11-25 03:13

It's a myth you need a 'gas engineer'.  In the UK there is this voodoo surrounding gas that makes people believe they will die if they get a wiff of it, nah, do it yourself, always.  In France ovens come with instructions on how to do it.

isolator42 - 2011-11-25 05:50

Yup, the lack of any HSE in France saves them millions & means more gets done. Maybe a few idiots get killed, but .... boof

Cris, it's only a myth until an insurance company go snooping around for a reason not to pay out on a house-fire claim or similar. No proof of pukka installation & your policy will be invalid. B4stards...

ghettoman - 2011-11-25 07:16

Actually Iso,that is a very good point,i never thought of it that way,now you put it like that it makes purfect sense to get the pro's in !! if anything goes wrong, they can face the music !!

davelc2 - 2011-11-28 13:46

Time has been tight but I did a quick wipe down and took some more pics of it. I should spend some more time cleaning her up. I lucked out with this one as it's pretty clean to start with!
