When playing your other stereo equipment do you sit there an watch the power Light glowing to ensure that it is on - while listening to the music you are playing untill the song is over?

ghettoman - 2011-11-17 00:44

Kool find choy, those discolites must be a rare find in china,i dont think i have ever known anyone with a discolite in china, most discolites i've ever seen is usually in usa,i've seen a very few in germany, and almost none in uk..

claret.badger - 2011-11-17 01:38

funny how one rubbish Madonna video makes a box that previously NO ONE would touch with a shitty stick - a desirable item

a curiousity and no more

kingrat2010 - 2011-11-17 02:09

thats a nice box, with or without madonna

ghettoman - 2011-11-17 02:20

From the one i once had..

looks - nice and flashy,

sound - not very good,

controls and sliders - flimbsy

general feel - cheapo and flimbsy

general overall opinion - ok if you can find one cheap, but other than that, leave well alone, its only the flashing led's that make it funky, but if like me you get bored of those flashing lights, you will want to get rid, like i did..and if these were made without those flashing led's,no one would look at one,or want one as bad as they do..you can buy 100 led's for £1 on ebay

Would i buy another ? yes if it was very cheap, but would i buy one for the prices they sell for these days,Not in a thousand years !! for the mad prices they fetch,i would'nt touch one with yours !!

radio.raheem - 2011-11-17 04:03

They sound TOTALLY poop so there of no interest to me

claret.badger - 2011-11-17 04:43

"value is in the wallet of the beholder"

kingrat2010 - 2011-11-17 04:52

i heard it sounds like poop but its still a nice box

isolator42 - 2011-11-17 05:48

I remember the days before Madonna's "Hung Up".

Then the Discolite was sometimes a topic of conversation on s2g; genreal consensus being the lack of sound quality was compensated for by the bonkers light show.

Only ever upstaged by the truly insane crown-cs2525 (the one with a spinning mirror ball on top). Here's a post with some pics if you don't know it:

Judging boomers like these on sound quality is like judging a container ship on it's turning circle.

Thats just me paul lad...if i know a box don't sound good I wont go near it.....in other words it would be to painful to listen to

ghettoman - 2011-11-17 10:07

i just read that thread, not sure if it was arkey or another member that had a huge stack of 777s..and i remember member Rom selector,he started to collect a few GF999s,GF909s and others, but you cant beat badbmr? with his 20-30 conions,or did he have 50 conions ?

radio.raheem - 2011-11-17 10:30

Yup....i beleve it's 50 conions now beanie lad...and that's just a small part of his collection

saxonman - 2011-11-17 14:13

discolites oooooh makes my skin crawl (I've been recapping mine all day ooh dear soooooooooo badly made) why do we buy these ?? are we really that in love with a few coloured lights?????

redbenjoe - 2011-11-17 14:28

the correct answer is   that we buy $$$ discolites --

because they are beautiful

( in their own funky way )

and because they are big fun and thrilling

saxonman - 2011-11-17 23:22

thrilling!!!! I'm not so sure have you ever turned one on????? love the lights but sound is very poor but i have one so maybe I've been turned to the darkside !

ghettoman - 2011-11-18 00:32

ok,i have to sort of agree with ira in one respect, but i also have to agree with saxon too,to be honest, when i first knew i was buying one,i did ask about to see what people thought about them, and i got the same response "quite fun to watch, but dont sound very good,i think hugo, driptip told me that too, anyhow when it arrived,it did make me smile..i did enjoy watching the lights ect..but when it came to listening to it,i was willing to put up with it,for a while..but once i got used to the lights,it was no longer "more about the Lights" it was no longer "something new" i then saw it more for it actually was,a Boombox and i concentrated more on the sound than the lights, and once i felt like that,i abandoned it,i just had lots of other boxes that sounded alot better and nicer on the ears,i think there is some truth in that phrase "painfull to listen to" and thats how it became to me,i ended up dumping it in the corner and went back to listening to boxes like my Jvc Pc5,55,777,they were just so much more satisfying because when you look at them, you know you are looking at quality..i only paid £150 for mine, and i sold it for £200,and it was mint..my friend who i sold it to was'nt a collector,he just wanted for the lights,he was fascinated in the lights for about 2 weeks, then he did'nt like it anymore because of the poor sound, and he sold it..

Anyhow, bottom line is,if when you are buying one, make sure you know what you are buying, and make sure you know what you are buying it for, more for the entertainment than quality feel or quality sound..if you can accept that then you will be fine.happy..like i said myself,if i saw one on the flee market or local to me for cheapish money,i would buy one again, but for the price i have seen them for recently, i would absolutely Avoid one like the plague..They just aint worth that sort of cash..end of..

ao - 2011-11-18 02:25

Who is this masked man?

redbenjoe - 2011-11-21 07:05

here is exactly why many of us buy and $$PAY and love these things

3817_3

redbenjoe - 2011-11-21 07:19

mdisco

isolator42 - 2011-11-21 07:57

yup, the DiscoLite is an excellent exponent of the "never mind the quality, feel the width" boombox philosophy.

I've said it before (alot): in the real world, boomers were about being impressive, with outright sound quality taking a back seat.

These poorly built, iffy sounding light-fests were just the ticket...

brutus442 - 2011-11-21 08:18

They just scream "1980's".I can almost hear Rick James' Superfreak right now.

You don't buy a 1955 Ford Thunderbird for gas mileage, you buy it because:

1. You've always wanted one

2. Have a sad case of nostalgia, and it reminds you of better times

3. Just have lots of $$ you don't want to leave it to your kids.

If at the end of the day it makes you happy...so be it. It's a hobby like many other and probably costs less than some, but unlike stamp collecting, they do occupy lot's of space,

redbenjoe - 2011-11-21 08:22

claret.badger - 2011-11-21 08:48

gross and tacky

and low in quality

just right for Americans stuck in the 80's

brutus442 - 2011-11-21 08:55

I'm not American..

I don't personally want a Discolite, but I wouldn't slam those who would.

I DO want a 55' Thunderbird though...donations would be gratefully accepted

Cheers

claret.badger - 2011-11-21 11:39

no one needs to agree with what anyone says

personally I'd like a 71 Datsun 240 Z

Would this apply to the 777 as well?  Because IMO those do not sound as good as they should, for all the hype.  There are several Panasonics and Aiwas that sound better.

ghettoman - 2011-11-21 12:01

Reli, trust me man,if you get the oppotunity to listen to both of these radios, make sure you listen to the discolite first, then listen to the 777,completely different class..i do know what you mean about the slightly dodgy sound of the 777 series, but i think its down to the sharp speakers,i've never thought much of them, slightly poor quality but passable..but when you give them a speaker mod, mainly the subs..you can get them sounding nice,as for the discolite, you could put a rockit up its arse and you still wont get it to sound better, they do look ok though..flashy..i'm not complaining asmuch about the poor quality, its more about the prices they fetch, they are simply not worth it,like $100-$200,yes ok,but  $1000+,NO WAY HOZAY !!!! But its not really my problemo, its not my money thats being spent..if they tickle peoples fancy, its kool..go buy one..

radio.raheem - 2011-11-21 12:13

Before madonna stuck her a$$ on one these used to sell for £50....thats about all there worth £500 no way

M90,Look Nice,Top Sound..

777,Look Beautifull,Sound Nice..

GF9000 Look Nice,Sound Not Very Nice, well they sound ok but not alot of bass for 8" woofers..again,down to the poor sharp speakers, change the speakers and they sound alot nicer..i changed the bass in most of the ones i've had (and i have had a few now) Totally different !!

claret.badger - 2011-11-21 12:32

Sometimes I fee James is like the "collector" from Toy Story

Amen Reno

ghettoman - 2011-11-21 12:50

Hmmmm yes i think it does,i actually think they kind of in simular league, think they both lack bass but i think the 9000 has the edge over the disco..cant fully remember, because i dont have a disco anymore..the disco is flashier than the 9000 but i think i would prefure a 9000,or better still,my 535,anything japaneezy version is nicer

radio.raheem - 2011-11-21 12:56

how about the wimen 500 for a night with one.....ya can keep you're discolight lol.....other things will be flashing then

Having compared the 777 to the M90, I can see where you're coming from with the 777.

However, I suspect the DiscoLite is a quantum leap backwards from the 777, sonically speaking.
