Marantz PMS-7000 - advise & expertise needed

beatbuddha - 2011-11-29 06:22

Hey guys!

This is my first post on this forum so I'd like to start by saying hello to everyone.

I have been scanning your site for a while now and joined so I could take part.

There are some truely amazing boxes out there. Even as a teen in the 80's I really had no idea! I just love the retro coolness of these things.

Anyways my story is I have just got into boomboxes as a result of my main audio hobby. I collect and refurbish vintage Marantz stereos and recently picked up a  Marantz PMS-7000. I have always lusted after the PMS-6000 (so cool!) and when I saw this unit I figured it was as close as I may ever get to the holy grail of Marantz ghettos so I bought it. The unit is in great condition and is about 90% functional. I am hoping to get this unit fully operational and was hoping I could get some help and advise from you all, as you seem to be the leading, and potentially only  , source  for information regarding these units.

I have a couple of things I could use some help regarding:

1. For those who have one of these units or have any information that may help me on my refurb I would greatly appreciate it. 2 things that are not on this unit are studs at the top of each speaker that connect and disconnect from the main unit. I have the nuts that they attached to because they came of inside the speaker but I don't have the pieces that protrude from the speaker that connect to the release.

Can anyone with one of these units take a picture of the piece and/or possibly give some dimensions so I can have one made or advise if this is the sort of thing might be available some where (I know this is highly unlikely).

2. The antennae is gone from the back of the unit. The swivel is still there and the clip that the antennae top clicks into is still there. Is there an easy and proper fix for this.

3. Any information anyone has as far as specs or sell sheets on these units.

Any help you can provide is appreciated. I really want to get this ghetto going so I can take it out on the streets and blow some minds.

Thanks for reading my post!

Cheers!

I agree. Nice build quality. I find the sound to be quite good on this box.

Has plenty of volume too. Just want to take it to its native setting of the streets.

Hopefully for the holiday season.

yes from what i have seen of them, the front is all alloy metal is'nt it ? the problem is,they were never sold here in uk,i think only germany and usa, there were many boxes that were never sold in uk..we never even got lasonic until the I931 came out..think its because we are only a small island..usa and germany is Huge !!

beatbuddha - 2011-11-29 09:51

Yes, the faceplate is a heavier metal alloy.

Funny that you say that about European distribution. Although I'm not sure of the actual distribution of these units, mine appears to have come from the 'Far East' as it is marked as a PMS-7000(k). I am in Canada so I'm pretty sure it came over with someone or imported by a collector. Same thing happens here as in the UK. US gets all the products and Canada get overlooked due to our relatively small population.

From what I've seen more commonly the units are marked as PMS-7000(e).

My experience with Marantz is that their production series ended with a letter to indicate the region of the world for which the unit was primarily intended to be sold: A = Australia  C = Canada  E = Europe  K = Far East  N = unknown. This would indicate to me that they were sold in at least some parts of Europe. Possibly like you say, just not in the UK.

Information on these units is few and far between. Hoping to dig up some details.

Hello Beatbuddha, try to contact with member Arkay on Audiokarma.org, he is a member on here also, but MIA.

He might be able to help you, cause as far as I know he is a fan of Marantz boxes, and has a number of them, including donor one.

As for specs, sheets - service manuals usually contain specifications >>

to tell the truth, I'm not impressed with the specifications of the PMS 7000

many of earlier and less expensive boxes even from 78-79, have better WRMS, S/N ratio, and frequency response.

Thanks metad.

As for the specs, you're right, they don't look that impressive.

Marantz has a habit of understating its stats. That may be part of it.

This does not sound like only 10W to me that's for sure.

I'd love to jump in on that auction......

Only a couple things:

1. I can't read what the ad is saying

2. the shipping cost would make the deal prohibitive I'm guessing.

Nice research though. Appreciated!

This may be true. Portable radios always "scream" too loud, cause they have more efficient speakers.

10 (5+5) watts for a portable radio is good enough, many boxes even with less power - so loud.

As for the auction, there is an option to translate it in english, on the bottom of the page.
