Aiwa TPR-940

drew - 2011-12-05 06:41

Anyone have experience with his Aiwa.  Seems like it's a higher end model having front & side speakers, twin VU meters. I'm guessing about 1977-8...among the earlier classy BBX's like Sony's CF-580   http://www.stereo80s.com/bbx.cfm?id=1347

redbenjoe - 2011-12-05 07:37

hi drew --yes it is in that same size/weight and heavy duty build mode

as your sony 580 -

--here is a decent one for sale

Vintage AIWA TPR-940 Boombox .. very old and very rare with strong solid sound

hi drew i have one,it needs new belts, they definately have a quality feel to em,and for its size its heavier than some mid size boxes i have.

ive read that aiwa decks can be a nightmare to fix so i havent attempted the belts.

litfan - 2011-12-05 14:16

I have alway`s had a fondness for this little gem. Had one, years ago, never could manage to change the belts on it. Never seen as much electronics crammed into a small box. Heavy as well.

a gem for sure, a lot in a small box six speakers twin vu"s built like a tank.

Found this...  http://www.radiomuseum.org/r/a...r_940_ee_stereo.html

1977 ~

Figured it had to be early, really before bbx's went to the street, when they were more of upper class portable stereos. It was probably over $300. It has many similar design aspects of Sony's CF-580 that was $400. in 1976. That was a lot of money in the 70's...you could buy a nice component stereo system for $400. back then.

I have a CF-580 and it is indeed built like a battleship...quality throughout. Will keep my eye on that 940 being auctioned......love the early stuff !

litfan - 2011-12-05 15:03

Redbenjoe, did well, getting hold of that tpr980. I have never seen one, anywhere.

redbenjoe - 2011-12-05 15:47

ok drew --just keep in mind --

that the deck just CLICKS --

and all these guys say they are hard to fix -

but the tuner and the line-in are fine - yes !!!

But seems like this Aiwa a bit older, cause on japanese sites there are few scans of Aiwa's catalogs from 1976

the proplem is front cover back one comes off fine, then top panel two screws knobs lifts off, then front panel screws are hidden 5/6 of them behind circuit board i kept all up right to stop screws falling out , front then pulls forward but wires for left speakers trap on the transformer gently move them out of the way then pull it to the left side and you can get to the deck 3 screws  hold it and two for the counter one wire plug ( head /record) wires are soldered then you can get to belts i have got to this stage to find spool wheel to drive play the rubber has turned to gum so cleaned all the goo off ,cleaned all switches just looking now to refurb wheel then alls good, even with belts on the deck just clicks because of the wheel hope this helps

And it's older brother TPR-930 (TPR-801) came out even in 1975.

in 1977 has appeared "new fashion" look with round speakers trim:  GF-9090, TPR-920...etc

i must admit like the aiwas onto a 930 at the minute

deliverance - 2011-12-06 06:02

i bet getting hold of the original mics would be difficult

ao - 2011-12-06 07:27

Oh these are great little units, I've got one in the AO vault.  The belt change was an arduous task if I recall, hampered by the sheer density of the internals.

litfan - 2011-12-16 12:20

Just shows you, the power of this forum. RBJ`s 940, went for $104. I have seen these go on ebay uk for £5. Mine was £8. People, obviously read this thread.

in my view ... it's rare to see Ira bid any more than $88.00 for something ... so if He won it for over a C note it must have been very Special

radio.raheem - 2011-12-16 19:07
