The one and only "HOW MUCH IS MY xyz WORTH" thread

ao - 2011-12-21 08:35

Due to what would seem to be popular demand we've decided to setup a thread dedicated to "How much is my boombox/walkman worth?"

If you have a vintage/retro item and would like to know the value, my suggestion would be to look back through previous 'for sale' posts here or browse back though ebay.

If you really have no idea then post in this thread here ONLY. "How much" threads elsewhere will be deleted or locked.

We'll let this run and see how it goes but if you get an answer you don't like don't come running to the mods

litfan - 2011-12-21 11:06

Well. You have alway`s given good price guides out cris lad. Anyone, that say`s a jvc m70, is worth £51.23p, know`s what he`s talking about.

retro - 2011-12-21 12:22

Thanks agentorange, this thread was long overdue, let's see how it goes.

deliverance - 2011-12-21 12:26

this could open a can of worms.

ao - 2011-12-21 12:36

Really just a way for us to help new members avoid a mauling.  We'll just guide them to this thread.

There's a second part to this which i think we should try out and that is every item posted for sale must be accompanied by a price, if not then it needs to posted here first.  That way 1. a seller will only list an item for something resembling its true value and 2. we avoid this constant bad mouthing of people who ask too much.

What do we all think?

claret.badger - 2011-12-21 13:18

Fishermen are always gonna be an issue
ie - people who want top dollar for their box - coz their mate said it's worth xxx now.

"ooh it's a Conion/LL Cool J JVC - it's worth 2000"
bottom line - it's just worth what someone wants to pay for it on any given day - if there is no counter bidder

anyone who says otherwise is just being precious about the cost they spent on their particular grail/box.

All working radio cassettes are worth 50 pounds - no more

boxed are worth 100

CD player boxes are worthless

if it's your personal grail YOU'LL do whatever you can to get it by either lowballing or highballing -

remember it's a Buyers market

redbenjoe - 2011-12-21 14:16

i can get this good idea for a thread started --

with one rare model --which seems to have NO recent $$ market

history --i bought it from a good usa collector who imported it from

germany --i think it was from member hi-fi tom

to judge the current market value --

by what i paid --would scare anyone from any interest..

so asking any potential serious BUYERS $$   to

post up the most they think they would pay ?

---------------------------

the deck no longer works - it did when i got it -

everything else looks and SOUNDS SPECTACULAR

its very compact --a bit smaller than a JVC PC55 -

but with bass in the league OR BETTER than a tele studio

and an m90 !!

its truly awesome

blufuz - 2011-12-21 14:24

I wouldn't even pay $20 for the ROTEL......

claret.badger - 2011-12-21 14:24

SCHWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET BOX!

I'll give you 40 for it

davebush - 2011-12-21 14:31

I think you chris should make a table of values with price guides for fully working,  part working,  condition etc etc .....itll keep you out of the wifes hair over crimbo

redbenjoe - 2011-12-21 14:37

just guessing -

that this thread should become very popular -

there may be a few 100 'non-ebay-traceable' boxes -

which members have no clue at what the values are

This isn't a bad idea.  I';m sure between us we could put together a reasonmably accurate guide to values.  Let's face it, there are probably only 100-150 core boxes which come along and we could add to it as new ones are found.

Something like this...

Model

Mint

 not mint

Non working

not mint

cosmetically poor

beyond repair

Sorry to go a bit off topic, but that's a new 'best-in-category' right there.
TWENTY 'sliders' for a 5 band EQ?
You have GOT to love those guys at Conion

this looks excellent chris.............obviously with your time of collecting, being the mod, and experience over the years, i think your the perfect guy to make the table.......and suggest a fair price for individual boxes

reli - 2011-12-23 19:28

The M70 is the only box that seems to have anything close to a "reliable" market value.  If it's in nice cosmetic shape and everything works, it gets about $400 on Ebay.

As for your Rotel Ira.......nice, but I'm waiting for your Aiwa Compo.

As far as a value guid goes there is this problem, there is simply no such thing as reliable market value.

On another note, Reli, where are you in the world as I have a Carryin' Compo for sale.  It's a heavy box so shipping will kill the deal but if you're in Europe maybe something cheaper can be arranged.

redbenjoe - 2011-12-24 04:07

yo reli -

my compo was sold to 71 spud --

so consider  this AO offering --

it may well be the only one for sale --

in the world !!!

reli - 2011-12-24 10:04

Unfortunately I'm in the US.  I believe you're in the UK?

retrodos - 2011-12-24 11:59

Working on a vintage electronic catalog, but not just walkmans. Do have most the sale catalogs for Sony walkmans and other various electronics catalogs, so can tell you specs, year and original MSPR in detail. But is going to take awhile as Sony alone made over 300 different models walkmans not including the different color, which makes a different in value to, plus you have the promotional, corporate  models. Then you have other manufacturers to, not just Sony.

Then the most important part, you can't have a good catalog without, good pictures. Which can take a while and be tricky, as you have to bounce the light off the object and defocus the background, plus get the right angle. so less chance of glare, using a decent wide angle lens with good lighing and flash, even outdoors do wonders.

True market value, the problem is theirs is no "reliable" market value, it's alway been what someone willing to pay and a seller is willing to sell for and how rare. Right now it's a buyer's market!! Most serious collectors know what they are willing to pay for certain models base on their collection and where their at, if it the last one to complete the set and ETC.

Most important is condition and this is were most sellers fail!! This is why serious collectors wait and go for NIB's, because one seller will say "Mint condition" and I get it and it has scratches or dings they failed to mention? Mint condition means perfect, just like it came out of the box. My favorite "accessories". If you just have the walkman only, but no "accessories", then don't price it the same as a complete unit!! Still don't get how people lose the accessories? have a pretty big collection, but label all the ziplock bags with model and bin, or box number, so I can find them later, for unboxed walkmans or keep them with the walkman in the display case.

Square and idk ill have to buy batterys to see

docs - 2011-12-26 07:45

It is generally a good idea to discuss the value of boxes but trying to put a "fair price" on something seems somewhat pointless since it is a matter of opinion and there is no accurate guide due to the fluctuation in prices of them. And besides, what is the point of trying to do it anyway ? just for those that come on here to get a guide on how much so and so is worth ? Those folks aren't collectors and I think that doing this only goes against what collectors want.

my 2p for what its worth.

detroit.scott - 2011-12-26 08:25

Nostalgia plays a HUGE part in what someone will pay for anything. I doubt anybody i personally know would have payed what I did for the last boombox I just bought.

deliverance - 2011-12-26 08:45

docs and detroit scott are spot on ,  what one would pay another wont.
