sharp 9494

deliverance - 2011-12-21 04:12

i was looking on ebay last night dropped on a 9494 looks in great condition so bid on it won it 35 bidders on it too !   anyone got one if so opinion.

ghettoman - 2011-12-21 05:54

i dont have one now,but i've had a few over the years, out of the 9090-9191-9292-9595-9696,i still think the 9494 is my fave out of them all..probebly for sound, the 9696 will sound the nicest, but still, the 9494 looks the nicest, the one thing i cant stand on all of these boxes,is that stupid little rubber trye on the capstan shaft, silly idea..i have fixed them bebore but i dont enjoy it..

deliverance - 2011-12-21 06:22

right bm that little rubber is a little git but done a few now so not phased i will have to wait a while for it to come now because of the holidays.

Good looking boxes but I always thought they underdelivered in the sound department.   Even the 40w 9696 struggles to compete with smaller less powerful boxes.

9494 is a pretty box though..

claret.badger - 2011-12-21 11:46

pretty box
not as good looking as the 9696

let down by humdrum sound quality
9191 beats it IMHO

It does give that impression, maybe for it's size.

So really the 9494 is all fart and no poo

deliverance - 2011-12-21 12:10

another turkey to my collection seem to collecting a few recently never mind

stereo.mad - 2011-12-21 14:04

the 9494 is a good box man well worth a purchase, i have two so i took the grills off one and it looks sick with the speakers surrounded by that nice chrome fully showing!

bendycat - 2012-01-12 15:30

I love my 9494 and it does have sound - so it's not up with the top five - if you want it louder ~stand yer head closer

pretty box and feels well made - get one in yer collection

claret.badger - 2012-01-12 15:33

mine sounded like crap - couldn't wait to shift it

(mind you - odd ariels made it look whoop as well)

I would very much like a 9292 in black please santa

reli - 2012-01-12 17:15

I've never heard a 9494........but the 9191 has muddled highs......its tweeters suck compared to an M9994 or a TPR-950

ghettoman - 2012-01-13 12:58

i've had a few 9494s over the years and its my fave model of all of 90/91/92/95 ect..i even prefure it more than the 9696..but all the 94s i've ever had either had something missing or something wrong with them, thats why i never kept one,but you got a nice box there man..

deliverance - 2012-01-13 13:04

hey bm my 9595 tuner has stopped working put in new back up batterys nothing any ideas ?

litfan - 2012-01-14 04:31

You can`t go wrong with a 9494. Great box. So long as the idler gear is in good nick. This idea, is nearly as bad as the tpr990 deck job.

not sure about that mate,i've never owned a 9595,i've hurd of displays going on hitachi boxes but the back up battery usually solves the problem,i'm wondering if stormin normin norm might know ?

mitchelljames - 2012-01-14 04:53

Great looking box, on my want list

bogdan - 2012-01-14 08:51

I used to have the GF9494,great box but I do prefere the GF 9191.

I also was disapointed about the highs on the GF 9191.But a friend of mine he also a collector told me about the thing that the GF 9191 and the GF9494 have a resistor linked to the tweeter capacitor. And if you remove that resistor and let the capacitor on its place the change of the sound regarding the high frequencies  is amaizing.I did it on my GF9191 and yes,it works alot. Now my gf 9191 is one with the greatest amount of highs among the other boxes.

I've never heard a 9494........but the 9191 has muddled highs......its tweeters suck compared to an M9994 or a TPR-950

So Reli the good news is that its not about the tweeters or about the preamp, but that resistor is responsable about that loose of highs.
