Project PC-55

brick - 2012-02-25 17:58

There as been alot of talk about base in boomboxes , so I have been working on a pair of extra PC-55 speaker boxes I had left over from a unit that was destroyed in shipping . I tried a bunch of different woofers with little real difference or improvement . The orginal woofer is 4.5 inches . The first problem is the odd size . There are plenty of 4' woofers that I tried with some improvement on base But then there would be no mid a very little treble . I then realized the orginal woofer is not a woofer but a full range speaker . The orginal tweeters put out very little sound . So I went to the store today a bought a pair of Polk Audio 5.25' coax 4ohm speakers . I had to make the hole bigger by about .25' all the way around . Now to test them ! They sound awesome ! Way more base , Way more sensitve , Way better midrange , And very crisp treble . All fit into the orginal speaker boxes . Its very hard to tell the difference in looks from the orginal ones . I am so thrilled to have an orginal looking PC-55 that sounds better than any boombox I have ever heard by far .

pretty good man, now is that a 3 way kind of speakers? the pc 55 is only 2 way correct?

i never owned one so i dont know how they sound, tho most people say they are one of the most powerfull boxes out there, the box looks good with 2 pair of speakers on each side .

macflyer - 2012-02-25 18:50

What you mean not much base on boom boxes???? my Hitachi TRK-3D8E rocks....

nice project....

brick - 2012-02-25 18:53

Ya they are now 3-way , I left the orginal tweets in place but I have ordered some soft domes to play with next . I hope it sounds even better with the new tweets .

Ya well the PC-55 has so much power and the worst speakers you could imagine . The only reason a PC-55 sounds great is because of the huge amp . Some how these boxes still sound pretty good despite the orginal speakers . With a few mods though it can sound better than any boombox I have heard .  I just don't know what JVC was thinking when they built this awesome boombox with crappy 4.5 speakers .

retro - 2012-02-25 18:59

I wouldn't mind trying this with a pair of Fostex or Focal drivers if I had an extra pair.

brick - 2012-02-25 19:02

Ya believe I was seriously thinking about Focal but my friends allready make fun of me for spending too much money on my hobby .

macflyer - 2012-02-25 19:16

As long as your fiancee or wife isn't claiming that you're overspending, you are in the green.

Whenever my wife starts complaining I politely remind her on he shopping sprees for shoes, handbags, boots, jewelry......well, you get it....

brick - 2012-02-25 19:34

My girl friend does not work so I don't think she would have much to say . She also has no idea how much money I have or where I spend it . I think she is just happy that I support her 100% . My friends do make fun of my spending habbits though . I think Focals will be my next project .

radio.raheem - 2012-02-27 09:11

That's a sweet project brick......here are some of the drivers im using in my pc55..i need more though because i have 4 or 5 of the 55 to do...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2609...id=p3984.m1497.l2649

i could have gone with redbenjoes idea wich looks beutiful...but i want to keep the origional cabinets....

i tried some sony a few yrs back and they did make a vast improvment...but not quite good enough....plus with these in im sure the pc55 will look mint and sound wonderful

brick - 2012-02-27 09:26

Looks like nice woofers . It was easy to get more base but I was not able to keep the mids a treble sounding good , thats why I went with a full range coax . I also went to a 4ohm to get more power . The only thing is I wish they were white like yours to keep a more orginal look .

radio.raheem - 2012-02-27 09:42

what are the ohms of the origional 55 drivers???can you check for me buddy....this may sound big headed but its not meant to ok....looks like im forced to sell 4 of my utmost best boxes,,,,wich i swore i would never do,,,they are my last m90 gf1000 and my 2 aiwa 880's...i wish there were something else i could do....what im getting at is the pc55 had plenty of bass with the sony drivers....but it lacked the warmth of boxes like my m90....wich also has replacment drivers..(marantz) i just dont think you can get the warmth out of 5"" bass like you can an 8"",,, im praying im wrong because after owning something like an m90 (wich i'll never get again,,,,im not sure i can listen to something with less than an 8"" woofer installed

redbenjoe - 2012-02-27 10:26

any way we do it...

its great to be able to really use the awesome clean power

that the 5 , 55 and 550 amps can put out -

YES !!!!

radio.raheem - 2012-02-27 10:36

Ok it looks like i have come up with a  thread stopper again....but consider this .......and Again i don't mean to offend,,,apologies to anybody if i have....consider this....if im talking rubbish...i would like to see anybody pay 3 k for any 3 peice radio......i know im always offending but it's the truth.......forget m90's bla bla....i like the sound produced by 8"" woofers...that simple....the only radio that i have ever heard imho that can beat the big boys.....is the panasonic platinum series....dt680 being one of them....if only it had the same volume......if i have offended yet again please tell me so,,,i can bugger off after my radios are gone....waiting on prospective buyer guys

deliverance - 2012-02-27 10:55

radio.raheem - 2012-02-27 11:06

radio.raheem - 2012-02-27 11:27

chris69 - 2012-02-27 11:41

Don't sell your M90 man! Conions/Clairtones are my favorite but i have alot of respect for the M90's and if you sell it,you will regret it for sure!

Some idiot just sent me an email trying to sell me an M90 for a low $5000.00 crazy fool lol! I'm not even in the market for an M90 unless it was dirt cheap.

radio.raheem - 2012-02-27 11:49

Thats just it chris...i wish these radios were worth peanuts bro....wouldnt even be considering this if they were...the most m90's ever sold for years ago was $1000....now it's just getting daft....and so tempting to sell the grails to get out of debt

*getting out the beer* What are they missing? white noise, eaten up tapes, heavy bag packs?

radio.raheem - 2012-02-27 12:10

the feeling of owning something....the tactile tuch of cassette.....lisning to the heads engage...waching the tape go round....ever heard a jvc pc55 fire her heart or a panasonic rxc52 spring into action...mp3 is just dead for me....it offers nothing just dead digital air.....and that's without even lisning to a cassette... each to there own i guess

It's completely fine to prefer one over the other....but how sometimes people refer to past is also filtered through their retromotions.... not saying you....as I said in another thread: I luv vinyl, hated CDs, survived thanks God tapes.......and I can enjoy digital since it opened new musical worlds for me through its distribution. Music discovery at its most efficient....

radio.raheem - 2012-02-27 12:35

bro i was just like you at the beginning....back in the early 90's i had over a terabyte of mp3's i loved them and the choice of music.....then one day my jukebox zen fell on the floor...dead i lost the lot...also all my hdds failed over a million£worth of music gone over night.....before all this i had about 300 cassettes wich i had foolishly given away.....now at this point i had nothing......then i realized i was missing something....my long trusted cassettes.......well now i have over 3 thousand of them....so what if one snaps....get another for £1.......if your loving your mp3's thats great mate...i did too....untill i realized cassets sound way better(if you have a clean tape path) its the whole deck thing for me mooving parts etc...

btw your gunna hate me...i just wiped over 3 terabyte hdds yesterday full to the brim with flac files....tape is where it's at for me buddy....btw i also hate cd's and minidisk just as much as mp3......but if your happy with your mp3's dont let me put you off...one day i bet you will be back to the old trusty cassette........

btw it's nice to have you here welcome aboard

Thanks for the welcome shout....

Well, Minidisc wasn't that bad......I remember fondly my recordings....the Beetle with a phat speaker system I ordered and a Sony Minidisc radio.....lots of beers, cigarettes while driving to parties and night clubs.....how irresponsible.....

The big question now is.....which source do you use to make your tapes????

No, I won't be going back to tapes.....I'll be enhancing my vinyl collection for sure.....and my AACs....

What's better???? Cheap file format, cheap speaker ipod system, cheap beer, cheap girls.....

radio.raheem - 2012-02-27 13:22

I could talk all night mate....but im off to bed....been up nearly 30 hours...im cream crackered.....if ya wanna girl ask the king redbenjoe...he supplies all us fellas here lol

records are better than cassetts...my friend forgetting the portability of cassette....there just to damn big.....anyway im out of here zzzzzzzz time

brick - 2012-02-27 13:34

The original PC-55 has 6ohm speakers .

I don't have a preference when it comes to traditional boomboxes or Component boxes . I do know that the 5.25' speakers have transfromed my PC-55 into a world class unit and I would put up against anything out there . Thats is not to say that m90 wouldn't kick hard with some modified woofers . The real difference is going to be in the amp though , there is no sub for horsepower .

brick - 2012-02-27 13:52

And the project continues ...
