THODIO BOOMBOX

fastcar - 2012-07-12 10:19

Seen a few chat about this.I have had 15+ REAL boomboxes.Included in my list are a few "holy grails"

hands down, this is by far the best ever.

claret.badger - 2012-07-12 10:53

nope this is overpriced shit

was discussed a few months back

thanks anyway

*OK - so I was being unfair with my initial comment. I'm sure this unit is made from premium gear and materials, i'm sure the finish is exemplory - I just personally think more effort could have been made on the overall design.

I am used to premium hi end hifi - and I know what I like - this box needs grills and look less like Bear Grylls homemade portable speaker system.

It has no FM/DAB section or a place to put your audio device - or does it?

It is just speakers, amp and a PSU in a termite friendly box  - so in this case . . . .

fastcar - 2012-07-12 12:58

The owner wants it to look like this. Not like everything else. Thats the point.I ( and many others it seems) like the looks.Personally its the sound that got me.If you do indeed know about audio, you know THICK , well braced wood gives the best sound.

1/4 or less plastic will never sound like this. This thing has deep deep deep real base.

I think"overpriced" is relative. You get what you pay for.

MY thodio sounds like large bookshelf B&W or paradigm stuidos with100+w monoblock amps.

I reviewed the TDK 3 speaker....it sounds like a plastic boombox.I think all 3 new TDKs are way over priced for what you get.

As someone that ACTUALLY owns a Thodio, I assure you : It is worth every penny, NOTHING made now or ever comes close to the sound or loudness.

There is a reason rolling stone did a piece on it.

Show me a mass or semi mass produced "boombox" with stats like this at ANY price.

I can also assure you in person the craftmanship is as good as you get on high end gear.

This is not some wood slapped in a box shape.

I do NOT work for or get paid by or comped by Thodio in any way.

Some say a car is JUST transportation..spending more then 15g for a car is dumb.Others think that audiophiles are stupid for spending 25grand to hundreds of thousands.

It is all relative

If you want the best sounding ,best built, loudest and frankly nicest finished "boombox"..this really is the ONLY pick.

claret.badger - 2012-07-12 13:30

I spent more than 15g on my last car

and my turntable would cost over 15g if you were to buy it new

price is not a problem

the aesthetics and purpose are
Boomboxes should be knock about and fun
this looks like Pinochios lunchbox

fastcar - 2012-07-12 13:57

Cool, show me somthing as good or better for less.

deliverance - 2012-07-12 14:25

I do NOT work for or get paid by or comped by Thodio in any way.   super.

NO this is not how this works

The Steroid *cough* I mean Thodio box is just too contemporary and homebrew to be considered relevent to these pages or the members therin (sorry to speak for everyone - but I'm a gobby shite so I will).

Have good fun and good times with your box - maybe you can use it to bench press with when you're using it

fastcar - 2012-07-12 18:48

Not sure why you say steroid so often or homebrew. I assume you are a very young kid.

I also assume you can not afford one so you mock it.

Do not get the bench thing either. Thought this was a boom box forum.

After all your attacks and silly posts , frankly, you seem like an idiot.

STILL never showed me anything better for less or close.

FASTCAR. I have read your review as per the link above. Why would you think guns and knives are cool?

fastcar - 2012-07-12 18:51

If somehow you are talking about me, I am your average 350LBS marine and power lifter.

Again, thought this was a boombox forum.

Nothing claret has said yet adds at all to this thread.

I guess ALL forums have "troll" kiddies

nak.d - 2012-07-12 18:57

FASTCAR, Clarets not a troll. Or a kiddie  I think his sense of humour maybe different to what you are used to, that's all.

sonic.blaster - 2012-07-12 19:06

i think that thodio thing is ugly as sh*t,they look nothing like a boombox, they look like a wooden box with a pair of car audio speakers screwed in to it,my son could knock one of them together, they could be as loud as a rolling stones concert,i still wouldnt want one.

i will show you better for less,a jvc kaboom, that would kill that thing for sound and looks

lol kaboom box.

I see the type that post here now.

Enjoy your forum

traveler - 2012-07-12 20:55

Thodio Ibox - The Ultimate Boombox ?

Nope!  The Ultimate Boombox is a boombox:  That operates on batteries that you can re-new ( purchase - fresh power ) anywhere you are at.

While this ( Thodio ) is nice and all that, it cannot compete with the " Traditional Boombox " that operates on " Drugstore batteries " bought Anywhere!

Yes the "Thodio" operate's on a gel-cel battery but it has to be recharged somewhere!?

"D" batteries Power are better as they can be purchased anywhere or more places than you are at with your gel-cel contraption 'thodio' versus the Ultimate D or C batterie's Powered Traditional Boombox.

driptip - 2012-07-12 21:10

ok Fastcar, check this out.

these are boomboxes, as you recall.

claret.badger - 2012-07-12 22:30

I don't know why someone can't produce a hi power box with a digital amp

and decent excursion speakers - in a unit that LOOKS like a "vintage" cassette radio

and not something that the kids that travel to school on the small bus and had their own classes designed in their lunchbreak with bits they stole from a Mk2 Capri rear shelf

northerner - 2012-07-13 04:18

Claret Badger's posts are some of my favourite on here!...he tells it like it is and pulls no punches ...awesome

Loved the straight in response of 'nope this is overpriced shit'...

nak.d - 2012-07-13 06:33

FASTCAR. I see you have been with us for a whopping 24 hrs. During your illustrious S2G tenure, you’ve been condescending, already accused others of being a troll and attacking you. Also you’ve made reference to your size and occupation most likely to bolster yourself.  Your combative attitude and stoic refusal to play nice (I imagine) are not particularly welcome here. The fact you actively enjoy things that can kill people (including Thodio BBX) doesn’t really fit in here.

deliverance - 2012-07-13 06:58

your right nak d anyone who has to go to such lengths to prove there point on a first post is a arse hole. i am a marine = so what!   does he thimk he is the only service man on here!  17 years myself , i am a power lifter !   yes he needs to be to carry his fat head around , i love knives and guns ! = ego trip i eat road kill yaaaawn !

claret.badger - 2012-07-13 10:42

I wonder if he had a fastcar?

didn't seem to be the kind to need to talk about it

reli - 2012-07-13 12:37

Novas can be very fast, if a built 350 is shoved in.

But I don't know any 350lb Marines......unless he means EX-Marine.

(Yeah I know, once a Marine always a Marine...but I think you get my drift)

As for the boombox, I have never seen or heard a Thodio, but I wouldn't doubt that it sounds better than anything any member here owns, including the TDK's.   I also don't think it matters whether or not it can take D-cell batteries -- who cares?

It does need grills though.

claret.badger - 2012-07-13 14:38

I quite like the look of the TDK

it has a more common DNA with a proper gheto blaster

and doesn't look like Frankenstiens shoe shine box

samovar - 2012-07-13 15:04

hello everybody. according to murmur & shout "the Todio A- box is an iPod boombox made from a vintage military ammunition case from the 1950s"

http://murmurandshout.tumblr.c...-boombox-made-from-a

this would explain much, from Aggro to kniveZ...

claret.badger - 2012-07-13 21:11

well grilles now make an appearance

but that port looks cheapy finished. Surely if you're gonna make a "statement" item you'd have made an effort and colour coded it - or something. If that's something I can see, who knows where else short cuts have been made.

i'll stand by my guns and say this "thing-ido" although no doubt may contain some "quality" comps, does not make it the zenith.

Who the hell came up with the name "Thodio" anyway?  Is it an attempt to be hip by being weird?

more like THIDIOT reli

ghettoman - 2012-07-14 08:50

lol at that box..yeah looks like a kid slapped it together..

to make a thidiot box, things you will need..

Either a tea caddy or a bread bin for the body,

1 suitcase handle,

2 curtain tie back holders to fix suitcase handle to box,

2 car audio door speakers,

car amp..

ahh fack it,cant be arsed, think i'll just go and buy a kaboom or lasonic i931,or Panasonic dt680,Aiwa Tpr950 instead,or somthing else that actually looks like a ghetto blaster and not that embarrassing thing that looks like a cigar box..i would get laughed outa town if i walked up the street with that ...

radio.raheem - 2012-07-14 09:42

haha that box is named the TURDO.....just one question....how much is it???.....saw some review...i wouldn't pay that much for a car never mind a piece of wood(boommbox)

fastcar - 2012-07-14 09:47

Figured i would make 1 last post:

" I am hostile"?

I came here just to say HEY and mention ( after reading several threads about it)

I actually own a Thodio...and give a review for those that never saw or owned one.

was attacked instantly by some jackass.

telling me" nope this is overpriced shit" and bragging about his "$15 000 turntables"

Simply gave a real , honest review..and got attacked for doing so.

bench press? steroid refrences? really? this is a boombox forum..no?

never bragged about marines, just said I was a regular guy.350lbs was just pointing out some people are just large w/o steroids....back to topic.

Not ONE has said that have heard or seen one in person..I have.

Just giving the facts. Also owned several "boomboxes' C100f, big ben ( we called it) and a few others.Even had a portable PA ( pile) ipod dock/boombox ( of sorts)..kaboombox and a few sony crapola models.I would guess 10 in total. My friends back in the day had other "holy grail" radios. I have seen them all...good ones anyway.

I guess I know sound and audio.I have some legacy audio mono block amps and legacy focus ( want whispers) and the usual support gear.NAD, rotell, older HK B&W,paradigm ect ect.I also have a few systems.

back to topic:

Just saying, bashing somthing you have NEVER seen or heard is ignorant.I HAVE compared it to eveything else.

Again, my intention was to give an un biased review of somthing ( i assumed) no 1 here has seen or owned.

that said:

It is wood for sound reasons...1/8inch plastic will not sound like 3/4 inch hardwood thats braced.

it has class H, hand made amps with burr brown op amps ( do other boomboxes use these?) MASSIVE way oversized heatsinks.ALL wired with ofc 14 monster type cable.

I assure you, no boombox has this.Several battery options. gel, l-ion or Ds if requested.

I prefer 8amp gelcell. In the future maybe a 20amp L-ion.Thing runs all day due to how effecient class H amps are.20+ hours non stop at med volume is good enough for me.Solar recharge is possible and easy if desired.

Speakers are not just somthing out of your 1987 civic. In fact, they are the best made in germany.I saw the 10 page "shootout" a german mag had on "6.5" coax speakers.

Was 20 or so speakers with 10 or so tests. These won a tie for #1.

I assume they are used because of the 107 DB peak effeciency.

Actually have a friend at an audio store. Tried 15 or so american 6.5.These sound alot like our ( american) Polk mm651 um.

plugged into my hdcd it sounds on par with my Paradigm studio 20s and NAD 100 amp/nad preamp.

This thing IS high end sound. If it said B&W on it , it would cost 5 grand. The zeppelin is 1/10 as good.

Has 2 jacks ( mine anway) for inputs. With the average MP3 player ( I use a new sansa 8g usually) that has fm radio and all the normal goodies. Can EQ also if you like and add the usual "rockbox" effects.

Can't describe sound with words really. can say take a quality home stereo with book shelf speakers costing 500-2500 a pair , and this is what a Thodio is.

Does it look like an 80s jap made radio thats cheap and flimsy with 900 lights..no

does it distort easy with a narrow freq range...no

frankly, nothing I have seen or heard of..comes close. Even made the mistake of ALMOST getting this..aftear hearing and looking at one..decided no way.

http://www.superboombox.com/

honestly for 2000-3000 this IS overpriced. I could slap this together in 1 hour.

for say 500-700 it would be a decent buy for those that cant make one.

Anyway,

I wanted the best sounding, loudest , quality " boombox type" radio.

I looked for 2 years.Almost got another c100f ( clone) of Fleabay for 900 bucks.

Glad I got the thodio.the DAY the TDK 3 speaker came out . I got one from best buy and did a battle of my own.returned it next day. it was just sad, looked cool though.

Personally I prefer louder, cleaner sound.Function over form and all.

I guess I am more of a get somthing and test it kinda guy, rather then a bash somthing I never saw.

So, I guess : if you have normal questions or comments w/o the 8th grade flaming ...I am here to talk. This is a boombox forum afterall.

not into unfunny, unclever, comments and trolling and silly pictures.( personally)

And yes the street and racecar are decently fast.I guess that is relative.

Streetcar goes in the 8s now ,racecar in the 6s

can youtube us to see them run.

quote "I am used to premium hi end hifi - and I know what I like'

Not a flame, BUT, if you think ANY "boombox" made of plastic sound good or is highfi...I must be a diff type of audiophile then you.

Still dont work for thodio. They are in the Netherlands.

Thodio = owners name + audio ..sort of   thomas Audio..Thodio ( I asked him)

Finish on mine is 23 coats of hand rubbed linseed oil, pollished with a micro-fiber towel.

In person this is as nice as any premium high end home speaker. What I consider premium .

 Port is solid.

port houses a hidden battery meter of sorts.port is quality and tuned with speaker program.

all hardware is SS high grade.

tested mine on the bench, with a powersupply at 18V I got over 200W rms.

With my 12v gelcell I get right at 140w.

( kaboom I took apart and tested had a massive 5w to the main full range speakers)

Xmax of the speakers are 5mm,large magnets

last, I still do not know of ANYTHING better or even close for any price that is mass or semi mass produced.Nor has anyone between unfunny jokes linked anything.

driptip - 2012-07-14 10:07

Dave,

i guess we are into 80's plasic boomboxes as you called them and not into 2012 wooden boomboxes,

dont try to change us because we wont change, as we dont want to change your likings either, plain and simple, i guess you and us like different things.

tho i do appreciate your input on what you love.

fastcar - 2012-07-14 10:10

Thats fine. Some like old school. I like newscool/high tech

Again, none reviewed it. SO I did.

That simple.

No need to flame.

Never tried or wanted to change anyone. Just presenting somthing new.

radio.raheem - 2012-07-14 10:16

I would like to know how much it is....because im one of those who love 80's boomboxes but find none of them adequate apart from the jvc kaboom....thanks Dave...regards Reno

driptip - 2012-07-14 10:17

these guys can be a tough crowd at times Dave, hope you stick around for a while,

and welcome to the site.

fastcar - 2012-07-14 10:25

kaboom is not 1/5 as loud and has 1/5 the bass and does not go 1/2 as low.

5w VS 140w. unless changed, the kaboom I tested was fullrange 1$ 4 inch or so paper speakers.it has on the end what was called a "sub"..mine was not very subby.

TDK is better IMO but here is like 500 bucks. kaboom at Costco is less then 200.

Price varies by version : Abox ( made from modified 50cal ammo can) small Ibox, new larger Ibox and the largest XC ( I have xc) coating, and several other options effect price.

The owner ( Thomas Spanns) a a great, friendly guy.I guess Email or call him if interested. After my review on my flashlight forum I run ( not knives and guns) he offered a discount to mention my name. He may still honor that..not sure.

everything is 100% hand made and designed by Thomas.

I am located in OH and FLA and NJ , if local, more then welcome to come seeand  hear it.

fastcar - 2012-07-14 10:29

BTW, I actually asked the owner to make me a 1 of a kind hybrid oldschool/new school HUGE thodio boombox.Lights, VU meters and 10 or 12 inch woofers =P

Think Conion C100f in wood and 10x the power oO

BTW I know these guys..some of yall may like these..or not.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hTKdGrcvik&feature=results_main&playnext=1&list=PLB22E85F83C72251C

These ARE slapped together but they function.

"boomcase" also interesting but no thodio

radio.raheem - 2012-07-14 10:35

Thanks Dave.....please just give me a rough estimate on the price of the  thordo.....if you look there is a link here supplied by Retro on this and many others like it....i will try and find the link for you....i am one that genuinely finds our boxes unsatisfactory.....including boxes like the mighty m90....this place is littered with my comment's....btw welcome aboard...regards reno

heh not the first forum I have been on. Always a few kids on A.D.D. meds that play world of warcraft all day, jobless and un married...often in a doublwide.Out of shape and "hating"

comes with forums

BTW in that avatar is that the old sharp?my next door friend as a kid had that. was HUGE.I remember a sharp, dynasty and toshiba sort of like that. been years.

lol as kids we use to battle boomboxes to see whos was the loudest.

Only the superjumbo was near my C100f.I blew so much on duracells till I discovered rechargeables.Back then capasity was sad.like 2-3 amps at best. can get high output Ds now from 10-25 amps.Nimh or L-ion.

fastcar - 2012-07-14 10:43

No idea on prices.

Email Thodio

http://www.thodio.nl/english/productpage

can also Skype him

I actually did video chat as he built mine !lets see some plastic cheapie MFG do that !

can see him build amps, spend 40 hours on the wood..solder and all.Kinda cool if your into that stuff.1 of the factory rooms has like 20 almost built amps, boxes in all stages, speakers and parts all over.Again, cool for techie nerds

claret.badger - 2012-07-14 10:45

who was bragging?

you mentioned money and people will get what they can afford

So I gave you a little per spec tive where I was coming from - sorry if you felt intimidated by a statement like that.

IF you like something - good - justify it - back it up - stick to your guns. But be prepared for a differing opinion. Merely slinking off sulking - then coming back with a huge backlash won't garner you any friends in a playground where you are the new kid.

Step in the ring - but don't use your boxing gloves from the get go - and admit that that wooden car audio box is nothing short of homebrew.

We like vintage radio cassettes here - this is a mobile disco made to look like the face of a raped owl

It has a place for sure - but not in my living room, or on the the end of my arm on the bus.

Coz where I come from - you'd get your thoido set alight and your ipod jacked blud.

just sayin my 2p

fastcar - 2012-07-14 10:45

I remember a m90 back in the day. The word victor comes to mind. not sure why.

neat radio.Not 1/10 a thodio.

fastcar - 2012-07-14 10:51

I guess if Thodio is "homebrew" so are any quality 500-1 million$ home speakers of the same quality.

You offer nothing to this tread.

lol jacked.never got jacked in iran or afgan' ..not worried about teenieboppers you know.

This kid never stops.

BTW seems some here dont like or are unhappy with vintage.

This kid ever stay on topic or add anything usefull?

claret.badger - 2012-07-14 11:20

don't call me kid son

you don't know me -

and my car can do the quarter in hi 14's so watch out now

you must be running top fuel  - so are you running a door slammer boss or you got some tricked out funny car on NOS with seq's and a chute out back

now who's off topic

"You offer nothing to this thread."

see you'll learn stuff here

They costs about 435 euros depending on the finish, and an additional 60 euros for the optional Bluetooth receiver. The larger version is 600 and up.

radio.raheem - 2012-07-14 18:48

Thanks Retro kindly appreciated.....sorry for being such a pain...hence im not posting as often....cheerz mate

retro - 2012-07-14 19:04

What if it there was an optional carry bag with the logo across the front, like the one available for the Bose AW1? Would that make a difference? I'm just curious...

radio.raheem - 2012-07-14 19:20

I for one quite like the boombox as is retro....high quality sound is the most important issue for me...and i quite like the mahogany look to her... the thing that puts me off as usual..there is no cassette deck..

Like i have stated before...no boombox has EVER satisfied me before...the 2 closest are the jvc hyper bass thing...(wich dosen't by far have enough power) and my new dp200 jvc kaboom...which is in bits waiting for a new tape deck

So im interested in what fastcar has to say....somewhere on here there are loads of boxes like this...but i can't find the post...and not being funny but im sure they would actually slay this boombox as they cost upward of $1000 but like i say i can't find the post...and there were about 100 to chose from...this box being one of the smallest

reno - as usual the meths you been drinking makes you all boggle eyed
but yeh - no cassette deck = "this thing isn't the boombox you're looking for"
*Obi Wan voice*

reli - 2012-07-14 20:07

cassettes are over-rated, when you consider you have to carry a separate case with your tapes if you plan on taking your box anywhere
