What on earth constitutes a 'HOLY GRAIL'?

nickfish - 2012-11-05 04:45

I am getting pretty confused. Many sellers of Boomboxes are describing their machine as 'Holy Grail'!

If they were talking about some iconic huge machine like a Sharp GF1000 or an M80 JVC or .... well you know what I mean but some tiny Sanyo that isn't even the sought after 7900 (which just cannot sound any good!)?????

What the hell is this all about? Is there a widely accepted definition of what is an accepted most prized machine or 'Holy Grail'?

Don't forget that if you are not worthy of the Grail, at least according to Indiana Jones; it will probably kill you!

when talking holy grails the likes of the jvc m90, sharp 777, and conion c100f are the ones that spring to mind.

some ebay sellers will deliberately use the word holy grail to try and sell an average box in the hope that some mug with no box knowledge will jump on it.

basically their just trying to fool the buyer into believing that their buying something of importance.

in my opinion their can only be one holy grail anyway, so which is it??

i think it's a silly word to use really, is'nt a holy grail a religious artefact??

Lav has hit the nail right on the head there! Another term they like to use is rare! A lot of the time they list a box as rare and  it's always one that's sh*t and easy to find!!

What LAV said, the flagship models and some that are nearly impossible to find. Then there the personal grails that are sought after for sentimental reasons.

scottym - 2012-11-05 05:31

"RARE RETRO 80's VINTAGE OLD SCHOOL HOLY GHETTO GRAIL BLASTER BOOMBOX AUX FOR IPOD" is what they usually say

scottym - 2012-11-05 05:33

I guess if you're splitting hairs some might say the Sanyo M7900k is a grail of the mini world hahah.

northerner - 2012-11-05 05:44

yeh, what they said...its a bit of a nonsense term used by ebayers to try and sucker those who don't know much about the relative rarity and value of boxes

bison - 2012-11-05 05:45

the crown i sold ten years ago, never seen one since,it looked like a sharp 777 with no handle.

wish i could remember the model number.

scottym - 2012-11-05 05:53

CSC-850 ??

edit: actually scratch that...didn't read the bit "looks like a 777" haha

Id reserve the term "holy grail" to mint or near mint JVC M90, Sharp GF 777, Aiwa CS-880, and Sanyo Big Ben. These are iconic great-sounding boxes, plus hard to find in near new condition..

deliverance - 2012-11-05 06:05

must admit the cs-880 is a good sounding box like most aiwa"s .

northerner - 2012-11-05 11:14

That widescreen pioneer is just amazing...I want one....though it doesn't have 5 cassette decks which obviously holds it back somewhat

i have always thought that all discussions about "grails" have a basic flaw. the holy grail is, by definition, one and one only. to speak of "grails", then, is wrong on principle.

in addition to that, i also believe that all the usual suspects cannot qualify as "grail": gf777, conion, bigben, m90... they're all too gorgeous to be grails. remember the following scene (perhaps not in spanish)?

the true grail must be humble. and personal. i have mine, but i keep it secret. and you?

northerner - 2012-11-05 13:35

That's a good point Sal...the holy grail in the Indiana Jones film was a dented scabby old thing!
