M90 auctions get the chatter going, eh?

Well, quite.  It seems nothing gets our blood going as much as an M90.

I closed the topic because there really isn't more that can be said and it's these discussions that push the 'wow' factor of this box beyond the reach of many of us.  It soon becomes 'groan' factor.

docs - 2012-11-30 03:27

Read about 3 of those messages for anything remotely useful about the topic

Problem is, which 3...

isolator42 - 2012-11-30 04:02

Indeed.

It does also make me want to get mine out for another airing, however...

Does that mean that unless you are already a member of the elite M90 owners club that you don't have anything meaningful to contribute? I won't bother then.

Another thing! If you are so bothered about the chatter about M90's pushing the prices up, and 'closed' a popular thread because of it; why start another one???

Good point but as moderator I'm not so much bothered but keen to keep repetition to a minimum, it just gets tedious, happy to reopen the thread but I fear it won't contribute much of any value to the site.

If however you do have something meaningful to contribute then the floor's yours.

nickfish - 2012-11-30 07:17

I don't especially have anything more to add but as a moderator and currently rejoicing at all of the new members that have come aboard, I think you should allow them their say, even if  it just helps them break the ice a bit and even if for you veterans the subject is a bit tired?

retrodos - 2012-11-30 07:35

Mostly everyone here, just tired of reading pretty much the same thread about how high JVC M90's fetch at auction, for stupid amount of money. All some of you are doing is bring unnecessary attention, to something that have more then enough attention already, so you can obtain top dollar for yours, or bragging rights. You figure if they read about it over and over that they will pay stupid amount of money for nostaligic reasons and keep the price going up, or to justify why you spent so much on something really not worth it and could have bought alot cheaper if you waited. If you have a thread that meaningful to contribute to others on how to service a M90, or show a rebuilt, then can understand.

Would be nice to see threads on different unique boxes, or walkmans that don't get cover offen, or rare and people may have not seen instead and bring attention to those, instead of the same damn model over and over again. Just get old quick and drives away other potential collectors getting started in the hobby. Eventually making the hobby go the way of the dodo bird!

Sure also be threads on PCDP, DAT recorder and minidisc recorders to, as they were portable to?

To members that compare this hobby to sport memorabilia? No it doesn't justify adnormal price hike, or even makes for a good reason period! With electronics they fail overtime, no matter how well you take care of the item and unless sign by someone famous and is one of a kind, no good reason to worth stupid amount of money. If that was the case, Nakamichi dragons cost for over $1800 new and is the world best cassette deck, it sure be worth 10k now, no matter what condition it's in? Reason why it not, because people, even well off that buy highend audio, even vintage do the research for the most part and know the potential problems they have and know they will need more then belts and cleaning to get the deck within specs and don't go after hype for the most part.

nickfish - 2012-11-30 07:49

I completely understand but for new members this is not old news, it's the first time they have seen this discussed. If you close down threads because you find it boring you will discourage new members from contributing anything at all. I know, I am one of them. Ask yourself if you want new members and new discussions or not?

And now you are continuing the discussion that was part of the thread that was closed! It's either done or it isn't!

By the way, I paid £335 for my Dragon and paid £525 to have it completely renovated. Nobody pays more than £1000 for an even recently refurbished one.

Read the post again NickFish, it's not so much members having their say but the same old varied opinions on the virtues of ebay auctions of M90's hitting new highs.  It's great for the seller & frustrating for our members but it has nothing to do with this hobby.

Different opinions are great and they should be encouraged but I 'believe' it's my role as moderator to keep dull, monotonous topics which offer little to no value to other members/visitors to a minimum.  I remove a lot of spam ads from this site for expensive fake Italian handbags, it's actually my view that they are fractionally more interesting than the virtues of some opportunist seller with a nice boombox with no interest in this hobby lining his pockets at our expense.  These are not discussions, it's just ranting.  You can't possibly disagree with that?

isolator42 - 2012-11-30 07:58

I'm beginning to wish I hadn't started this...

nickfish - 2012-11-30 08:00

If your genuine hard core veteran contributors were distressed about the thread and it's content and were completely tired of the same old story they would have left well alone and not contributed. Actually they saw it as an opportunity for a bit of banter and if that is what they like, and that is what keeps this site alive for them, it is what presumably makes the site attractive and enduring for them and for new members.

It just seems somewhat ironic that you closed one thread and immediately someone started another discussing the earlier one. It seems that for some, if not many, it was not finished yet.

I will be quiet now because it seems I am in a minority here.

Wrong!! Sold recently a couple for $1399 each and get sometime up to $1600, depending on upgrades, like CMOS switches and cable, But do a true restoration, unlike 90% percent of sellers. Change capactors in audio board, PSU and DD board upgraded, replace spooling idler tire, cambelt, counterbelts, autostop lamps, door lamp, realigned tape path guides and head tilt, height and zenith and much more and verify deck runs within specs afterwards.

How many dollars to the pound right now?

Mine was done by Bowers & Wilkins UK (Official Nakamichi agents) and is as good as when it left the factory according to them, or it would have cost more...

Like I really care, good for you! Yes they had a MSRP of $1850. Plus just use the dragon as a mere example. Not saying it sure cost more, saying the JVC m90 is way overprice for what it is, due to it being hyped up and very heavily advertised around here. Where the hell did I mention in pounds and today going prices in the first place in this thread? By the way, you made the stupid statement in the first place stating what you paid, like I asked you? This is going no where quickly.

Not it doesn't. It means that there were a lot of posts in that thread which were not remotely related to the topic, as per usual. I also meaningfully contributed to the thread...

I tend to agree with AO that closing those threads which have no real value is the best for the site. Now if there was an active discussion about the actual issues and not other none related stuff in and amongst, I'd say that it was a valid contribution and worthy of further debate.

That is all.

litfan - 2012-11-30 13:36

Yeah. Somehow, we went from the m90, to the nakamichi dragon.
