5 speakers?...not enough ;)

northerner - 2012-12-10 03:21

So as we know the Philips D8444 sounds a lot better on paper than in reality...it should sound fab based on 5 speakers and 3 amps!

But we know it doesn't.  So I decided to upgrade mine with new speakers.  Found some two way Wharfedale speakers at a car boot that had never been used so as they were a perfect fit I replaced the very lightweight plasticy existing ones.  It now sounds a lot better, got a deeper sound which is much clearer.  Still not fantastic but a big improvement...so now its got 7 speakers!!

It’s funny looking at the writing on top, “spatial Stereo”. The drive units are all so close together that all you will really get is mono sound.

nice upgrade si,

they  look cool as 8444s but they are disapointing,

that said ive just picked another one up that needs work,

might have a go at upgrading it,i like the grills off mod that lee did

I'd like to pick up a beater and strip out everything and install a high power amp and speakers, and maybe some LEDs...its just so pretty and I'd like one with full sound to match its looks...but I couldn't do anything so drastic unless the box was completely knackered

nice upgrade Si, i had one a few year back but could not listen to it as it was completely dead.

i ditched in and thought nothing of it, this was obviously before i joined here, if i recall it was made in singapore, says it all

still looks great though

cheers mate...the Wharfedales weigh probably 20 times what the originals do...to be fair the originals sound pretty good bearing in mind I've had better quality and heavier products out of a Christmas cracker

lol,i thought it was you lee,it was someone else mate,

i know you like to mod the odd box so i got mixed up,

stripped one of mine down tonight and it has bodged up wiring on the speakers

gonna whip the grills off it and have a play around with it.

i tried some 3d80 woofers but they were too big,did you struggle to get them wharfedales in si?

I had twins a few years back that I picked up from a local thrift store. You're right, they sounded lousy. Set them both loose on ebay.

Philips Spatial Stereo is there version of Stereo Wide, Surround, Ambience, Biphonic, etc.

As it goes it's one of the better of it's kind, IMHO

no problems at all...they just dropped straight in with no adapting, used the existing speaker brackets...took no time at all
