AIWA CS 880 v Philips d8614

glen - 2012-12-31 05:54

Can anybody tell me out of the two listed boom boxes which one of them sounds better, and also which one would u rather have, looking fwd to the replies. p.s Happy New Year when it arrives..

Aiwa cs880 v Philips d8614

erniejade - 2012-12-31 07:34

I am going to say the 880 for sound quality  but I could be wrong

glen - 2012-12-31 07:59

Apparently.  Ive been told different since ive posted this. 2 pple reckon that the Philips sounds better than the cs-880.

docs - 2012-12-31 08:18

All a matter of opinion and both will have strengths and weaknesses just like any box out there. The true test could only have been done with fresh out the box units which is obviously nigh on impossible these days.

lav.loo - 2012-12-31 08:24

ha ha love the thread Glen, i am in no way saying the 8614 is louder than the 880 but for a mid size unit it really does sound great.

it has plenty of bass excellent crisp highs and goes loud.

further more it goes really loud with not much distortion, whack the loudness on and turn up the sweet spatial stereo and you will be sweetly surprised.

on top of all the above you could bag a mint one for no more than 80 quid.

my advice is to grab one and if you disagree on the above on hearing it.....il'e take the flack off you

glen - 2012-12-31 08:44

@ Docs I agree with u entirely,  but there must be someone out there who knows the score more than u & me.

retro - 2012-12-31 08:48

Someone make a featured CS-880 thread for Glen quick! :-)

hey no worries it's always nice when i get a chance to boast on the philips

and if i'm increasing your activities at the same time then that's a double bonus, killing 2 birds with 1 stone i think they call it

glen - 2012-12-31 09:12

Yep its all good. But I was thinking if the Philips was all that good how comes its selling so cheaply 2nd hand? It makes u wonder dont it

glen it's just an underated box as they look nothing like they sound....from a man of experience the phillips wins hands down....the trouble with the 880 is if you want to go high volume you got to back right off on the bass! with the d8614 you dont

docs - 2012-12-31 09:30

I've also had both and think that the 880 has more depth but mostly down to the quality of the material of the casing which the 880 wins hands down. The Aiwa sound is just a "different" sound to the Philips and any other manufacturer in fact. The 990 sounds great and is top quality, the 880 sounds great too and is probably the best sounding Aiwa, the 770 sounds good too. Comparing these two is not like comparing the same quality of audio reproduction. With a well maintained 880, it beats the Philips, problem is there are few 880's out there that are either original or in excellent shape.

lav.loo - 2012-12-31 09:38

2 different opinions above and never owning an 880 i can't add unfortunately, but as Lee says the 8614 is so under rated.

i will back it all the way against any box in similar size

glen - 2012-12-31 10:03

@ stereo mad. I see, so basically the Philips has better highs & mids whereas the Aiwa is more for the bass enthusiasts.  So if u want more clarity you'd opt for the Philips.
So it really depends on the type of music u like to listen to according to what boom box youd buy. Correct??

erniejade - 2012-12-31 10:06

When the question is asked to me about sound quality, I do not consider volume in the sound quality. If the question of volume without bass breaking up was asked, then I would say the phillips. For normal volume, the 880 in my eyes is cleaner in the vocals, mids, highs and bass.  When pushed, the story changes but, for normal volume, I think the 880 has a better sound.  Another example is some of the sanyos like the m9990 or the m9994. Both are crystal sounding at normal volume but when kicked up too loud, they break up.

glen - 2012-12-31 10:08

Hey doc, im feeling what your saying dude. Ive also heard the cs880, I loved it. I play a lot of Roots Reggae, Hip Hop, Ska, Folk music.  So yes the Aiwa would be perfect for me to listen to bass guitar and rhythm guitar too and of course Acoustic.

erniejade - 2012-12-31 10:10

Maybe the one i had was just different   the 880 i had was clean more like home stereo sound where the phillips was louder

stereo.mad - 2012-12-31 10:39

Glen I'm saying its the othe way round, the Phillips has more bass at high level which I prefur, I have both side by side in front of me and have spent the last hour putting them through a kick ass sound off and the Phillips handles much more bass at high volume but the awia just has the edge on highs
Your welcome to come over in the new year and try them out as I don't think your to far away from me buddy

Imho the 880 is much better....at lower volumes much deeper bass than the phillips......if you want deeper bass just buy the kaboom (dp200) deeper bass than all of them....and the highs are good too

Aiwa CS-880, JVC RV-NB1 Kaboom, Philips D8614, ( Philips D8514  Best of the Philips Boombox's! )

Since RR included the Kaboom Here - thought i would show the KING of BASS in this collection - [ JVC ] and my preferred best of these ( Philips versus Aiwa )

The Aiwa is very Nice but lugging '1' around all day i prefer the Philips D8514 size wise

Yes the D8514 doesn't get as loud as the other's but it sound's very nice and it is not so big & if size is No Question, as it is BASS that you are after? Then the Kaboom Wins

Just to give you a idea as to just how much you would be lugging around

Radio Raheem, i know your an experienced guy when it comes to Boom boxes & you know your stuff pretty well but give me your honest opinion don't u think those JVC Kaboom boxes are the most ugliest machines ever made, i'd rather have looks & good sound quality like these two machines below. The AIWA Strasser CSD-SR8 & the Sony ZS-7.Originally Posted by radio raheem:

Good morning glen....haha sure i think the kaboom is fugly but it took me years to buy an 880 too as i think there fugly too lol anything with 3 speakers instead of 4 looks strange....i mean if you get an ugly woman you just put a bag over her head....if you catch my drift hehe.....the kaboom (dp200) is worth it glen, i wouldn't trade my boxed one for an m90 as sound has always been the most important thing to me lad

glen - 2013-01-02 01:45

Good morning to u to Sir. Lol.. ok fair enough, point taken about the JVC kaboom (dp200)

Btw have u seen this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yV8Ocmk2e58, i like the beat box gimmick going on there. Are all the Kaboom built with this gimmick in it?

glen - 2013-01-02 02:05

That my friend is the jvc dp100 nearly the same as the 2oo but the 200 has a front row of led's and maybe extra features

glen - 2013-01-02 02:44

I remember seeing the Akai back in the day. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOaMwh-0fKc
Yeah, now that jvc pc55 i know very well a mate of mine loaned it to me for a couple of wks that machine is a beast, very powerful & loud, i think if my mem serves me rightly 57watts RMS, is that right?
The jvc dc33l looks awesome but dont like the fact that the turntable sticks out whilst playing, so id go for the Sharp VZ-2500 Vertical Linear tracking Radio Cassette player.
The panasonic rx c 52 looks kinda cute, looks like it came in Red/Silver.
Good choices... Hey, i've got one for ya, check this out.
i kinda like the sound of this one.
