I've disco'ed up my Philips D8444!

northerner - 2013-02-05 11:31

OK so ever since starting to collect I've wanted to modify one but every time I got a new box I decided it was too good to mess with

So I got two of the same box so I could keep one mint and modify the other...got a Philips D8444 as it ain't much to buy and its not the best sounding box in the world so I didn't feel too guilty messing with it

In the year I've been collecting I've done some restoration work to boxes so I'm not completely clueless but I've no knowledge or experience of electronics so it was a bit scary but this is the result (hope this works as not put up a video before!):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aNOc2V0IBI

Its all wired into the box power supply and the LEDs switch on and off with the main on/off switch, though I added a switch in the recess in the back of the box so I can switch just the lights off if the flashing induces an epileptic fit!

Hope you like it, though I'm sure the purists out there will hate it!

Interesting ! and well done!

I particularly like the knight rider style

stereo.mad - 2013-02-05 11:58

si that is absolutely amazing bro....well done mate i love it,i need to be picking your brains so i can do one

northerner - 2013-02-05 12:50

Cheers Dave and Lee

I love the knight rider effect too...the different sequences between the red and blue just seem to kinda bounce off each other. Plus they're sooo bright, you should see them in the dark!

northerner - 2013-02-05 12:54

Oh and Lee, it won't take long to pick my brains mate!

stereo.mad - 2013-02-05 12:57

lol, well that don't say much for me then lad!

northerner - 2013-02-05 13:05

Nice bit of fun that, looks cool, great job mate

pioneer - 2013-02-05 17:26

Great job  Northerner i must say it does do that box justice and the way it turned out look's like it came that way. That being said, when you get the need for lighting, a better boombox that would be right off the hook for sure!and again Great Job!!!!!

brutus442 - 2013-02-05 17:36

Extrordinary work Northerner!!!!!!!

bison - 2013-02-05 22:20

deech - 2013-02-06 04:06

I love the work you did Northerner !!!!

The Philips turned out great , you have some skills !!

Can you tell how did you hook the leds in there

as i m very nterested in knowing it .

Maybe i ll give it a try in one of mine .

northerner - 2013-02-06 09:00

Its got two of these bad boys fitted...removed the switches and the battery clips and wired them into the power supply pcb to pick up the power (actually used my multimeter!) and then used a better quality switch that sits in the recess in the back, though they do actually go on and off with the main on/off switch on the top.

The LEDs are fitted from the inside of the casing...drill tight fitting hole, slide LED in, bit of hot glue and bobs your uncle

kit

Question Northerner, does that switch on the board change the LED pattern?

northerner - 2013-02-06 22:54

There's a black button that changes the pattern so you can select any of the 17 available or have it rotating through them all as I have. The white one with the cross adjusts the speed. It's a nice little kit

deech - 2013-02-07 05:02

I just love the lights on the 8444 !!

Northerner can you give me a tip on where to buy

a kit like yours !

retro - 2013-02-07 05:05

Well done Northerner.

Its a Bulgarian kit from a company called Hobbykit but I got mine from a UK ebay seller who seems to import a few of them.  I think the seller might be Bulgarian but UK based so probably fills his suitcase on his way back here .  Couldn't find any official distributors though I didn't look very hard

They seem well put together so I was well pleased with them.

deech - 2013-02-07 05:44

Can you send me a link via pm Northerner??

northerner - 2013-02-11 06:52

I was going to keep my other D8444 as is but I'm so pleased with how this one went I might just have to disco that one up too!  When the lights are off you'd never know it'd been done so I reckon I can justify it   Not really bothered as to whether it adds to the value or vastly reduces it as I'm in this for fun not for the money   They're hardly rare anyway.

We were away for part of the weekend and it seems in my absence my 17 year old son and his mates were making use of the D(isco)8444...cheeky buggers   So it seems disco-ing it up is popular with the yoof of today

Thinking I might go part sound reactive and part set pattern, and may be different colours?  Probably go for similar number of LEDs though as I think any more would be overkill.

Then I reckon both of them side by side both flashing away will be awesome

stereo.mad - 2013-02-11 07:16

si your really getting me thinking of doing one myself...

as for your son and his mates messing with your boxes, well that's exactly why i have a door and two locks on my room in the loft!!

Well the disco one is in the kitchen at the moment and all my others are in the big TV room which is actually where loads of them crash on the sofa/floor after the pub on a fairly regular basis so I've already warned them that if they so much as scratch one I'll f'ing kill em!!   There a good bunch of lads tho so I'm not too worried, plus some of them have rich parents and I know how to sue

Thank you for the link Northerner !

Only problem is that some bugger has bought his last two kits

He had loads when I bought mine a couple of weeks ago so maybe he'll stock up some more...just keep an eye on his listings.

Oh, and yes that bugger who bought the last two was me

Gonna work on getting some bespoke kits done by my brother in law who's an electronic engineer for Marshall amps, not sure whether he'll do them but its worth a try and it will be a piece of cake for him if he's got the time.

Actually, thinking about it, you'd be importing from UK to you so you might as well get it direct from Bulgaria anyway

ground.control - 2013-02-12 07:04

Very interesting and as always a great job

northerner - 2013-02-13 07:35

Well just wait for version 2!!

Got a sound reactive unit and 2 sequence units on the way to me so we're going slightly different on the next one
