I really liked the MinDisc format.. It made decent recordings (when used in the original ATRAC/SD mode), and most of the portables had good reasonably powerful sound.

When used with a computer, however, they where awful. After dealing with SonicStage it's no wonder people think iTunes isn't horrid.

I still use MiniDisc from time to time because I have a shoebox full of discs.

My everyday player is now a Cowon. It has line-in recording, good sound, a microSD card slot, and I don't need any annoying proprietary software to transfer files. My only complaint is that it doesn't have a user replaceable battery.
