Fixing a 9090 where to start?

doubledecaf - 2013-02-28 15:34

Speakers are loose.

Tape deck turns.

Rewinds and fast forwards.

Switch to radio and get white noise.

Tuner moves needle but nothing tunes in.

Where would you guys start when fixing this?

Also do 9090s have a line in?

Thanks in advance everyone

Open it up. Use switch cleaner on all switches and knobs, this is dead easy and often clears 90% of problems. Then report back

Oh and there's no line in. I use an fm transmitter with mine

Thanks for getting back to me. I have taken the front off and this is what I am confronted with. I am so out of my depth. Where would you start from here?

Please see attached video.

I'm just off to do a job but I'll happily talk you through it when I'm finished if no one jumps in before me. It's not as difficult as you think

doubledecaf - 2013-03-01 09:14

wow thank you I would really appreciate that!

You need to remove the switches and knobs off the top, they should slide off if you do it carefully. Then remove the top plate (with all the text on) to uncover the pots and sliders (I think there's a couple of screws to undo to remove the plate)....the sliders will be hidden under bits of felt. If you've got a compressed air can give em all a blast. Then you need to spray switch cleaner, such as Servisol into all the pots and sliders, then work each one 30+ times...the cleaner and movement removes 30 years of corrosion. Leave to dry then try the sound again. It's amazing what a bit of switch cleaner will do...if you're UK based then maplins or eBay to buy it. Try that and report back

Hello there,

All cleaned up. Everything works except radio. Switch it over to tuner and it turns the radio on and I get static, but thats it. Any thoughts? Where would you go from here?

northerner - 2013-03-10 06:11

Well done

If you get static then at least something's working

Aerial loose connection? Did you reconnect it when you put the back panel back on?

Is the tuner string running right ie is it actually changing frequency?

Have you thoroughly cleaned every switch?
