homemade? what do you think of these?

smeats1976 - 2013-03-16 09:33

seen some like these on ebay recently and wanted to know what other members thought of them! I think its a fun novelty idea but It made me think about how cool a homemade box could be! I've seen some very clever people on here do a lot of complicated mods to their boxes and was wondering if anyone has built a box from boombox parts ( bit like Frankenstein's monster) or car audio gear perhaps? If so I would love to see pics of them!!

Prefer staying with vintage intergrated cassette radio - just add batteries

danofcus - 2013-03-20 00:26

the mookboxes are by a friend of mine , I had no idea that people would pay that much for them , but to be fair I have no idea what's inside the box amp and battery wise . I also build boxes but do it in wood and don't charge anything like that for it.

it seems that the old skool suitcase boomboxes made by boomcase a american maker are really highly priced.

this is the one that I've built myself this year , payed for some bits and salvaged upcycled others, I reckon about £60 for this box .

what do you reckon ?

ps  I use to have 4 nice 80's ghettoblasters myself

Nice work! thought this would be a lot more complicated but after buying a ta2020 amp (similar to yours) and power supply I've decided to build one myself! late 70s early 80s oldskool boombox style though, the briefcase is a fun idea but not really my cup of tea

danofcus - 2013-03-21 11:00

glad I could help

I ask as I used to fit them out, the traditional all-steel kind.  I could recognise that roof angle anywhere.

Hi folks - nice to see you all appreciating the gentlemans boomboxes ;-) I certainly enjoy creating them and they are a currenly a labour of love,so far despite the £300 price tag of the one in this thread I have only covered the costs of construction which looks strange on the surface as it looks old and battered, (deliberately so )but inside is lined with 6mm mdf and full of new electronics - just to give u a small idea of costs - case £40 battery £30 - recharger £30
amp £15 - speakers - £20, mdf £10
Those parts represent about about 2 thirds of the costs not to mention the considerable time I spend creating them.I hope eventually I can bring down the cost of materials so I might make a little money from my hobby, but for now I will continue to make bespoke suitcase Soundsystems mainly because it encourages others to make their own portable audio ;-)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FO1n5LBVnUk  there's a mookbox > come unity boombox link up in Oxford on 28th this month ,also new box I'm building will be finished then and out for the occasion and I'm not sure but mookbox might be bringing 2 of the suitcase sounds , link all 4 together and play the people some nice music , it'll be filmed for youtube obviously and then I'll post it here . come along anyone in Oxford area , it'll be in the center of the city.

mookbox - 2013-03-24 03:10

Looking forward to it dan - & smeats - if you plan to make a boombox from a case be warned - they dont like being soundsystems & vibrate a lot - pay attention that the handles catches & hinges are not to shakey - when you board it out use a lot of glue - if possible make gaskets for any exterior fittings - this will all help with the performance and bass handling - I only use 100w power as all the cases I have made would not withstand any more before the lid vibrates against the base. Good luck & I look forward to seeing your old motor living on in a boombox - u should put an old chrome car badge on it when it's done ;-)

nice video chaps, I thought I'd do 2nd a video just to show the sound

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FO1n5LBVnUk

and then my friend saw the park bench video and asked me to do a video for , so this is what I made  , on a cold windy day .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRoubte1aGI

and later that day after someone else had liked the park bench video, I was offered to do a video for one of there tunes , so I went and did that

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yXBC1c39ew

then another person asked me to promote there tune after seeing the husky on the bridge video   so I'll be doing that soon enough .

What amp did you use ? I'm trying to get a simular sound into my boombox but i'm using a ta2024, which does not have the option for a third speaker...

mookbox - 2013-03-28 13:05

It's called a tl-2006 - I bought it because it had a pretty Vu meter in it but would not recommend it due to it being a bit hissy :-(

djalexx1 - 2013-03-31 23:57

i really apreciate the art on those mook boxes i want one, but i gess i will need to build one. i dig that  old brown suitcase combination with  that shinny silver.

mookbox - 2013-04-01 02:02
