My first Aiwa!

northerner - 2013-04-13 10:53

Clip
Picked up my first Aiwa this week, a pretty minty 990K. The pics are before I've done anything to it...it's that clean Went to collect it as I didn't want to risk shipping this beauty.

It's my first big box since Christmas!!...I've really slowed down buying now and am trying to up the quality

Got the usual crackly controls and melted belts so am working on that...and yes I know what a nightmare working on it is Got the service manual and taking it slow lol! Oh it was jammed on play too but have sorted that.

Was pleased to find this was another Clash box!! Seems a lot less common than my other boxes.

Can't wait to hear it play properly

brutus442 - 2013-04-13 11:51

Simply beautiful Northerner!  You seem to find all the nice ones Save some for us will you

northerner - 2013-04-13 11:55

130 miles is too small a distance to pick up an AIWA .

Congrats!

skippy1969 - 2013-04-13 13:27

Congrats,shes a beauty.......

northerner - 2013-04-13 14:05

It was 130 miles there but if it makes it any better I drove around southern England for another 550 miles with it in my boot before I got home again

womble71 - 2013-04-13 14:26

Nice find Northerner, she looks really clean.

redbenjoe - 2013-04-13 14:53

there's a box that looks great -- sound is terrific --

quite rare  - worth the trip = keeper !

stereo.mad - 2013-04-14 02:02

Nice box si...I have a mint one but its really poorly
Been like it from the day I got it so I don't know how well they sound?

northerner - 2013-04-14 02:21

This ones pretty minty too Lee and I don't know what it sounds like yet either lol. Not putting it back together until I've got the right belt to fit, as it was a bit if an arse to work on, so I'll have to wait a bit longer yet...supposed to be a good sounding box tho, will let you know

samovar - 2013-04-14 03:06

is this the prize you got for breaking through the top 100?   what an AIWOW!  so elegant and with such a good sound...  Love it!

northerner - 2013-04-14 07:30

Thanks Sal. Woulda made a good prize but sadly no, had to pay £'s for it...not too many though

mitchelljames - 2013-04-14 08:16

Looks like a really nice box, I must get a nice big aiwa.

ground.control - 2013-04-14 09:51

Nice find ...its a keeper

northerner - 2013-04-14 10:13

Thanks

This afternoon I stripped the front down and gave it a bath...didn't really need it but I like em clean! Repainted the speakers too even tho they were only slightly faded. Going for as minty as possible

Will repainting the speakers reduce the "mintyness" factor?

I fear that is what the purists advocate

forget the purists, this gem is going to shine even more after such a treatment!

northerner - 2013-04-14 11:51

It's only a very light coat of black acrylic artists paint...just brings back the black without changing the finish. I'm not a purist, I just like my boxes to look as fresh as possible so I've done this with almost every box

The speakers and grills need to be like new IMO

radio.raheem - 2013-04-14 12:18

Congrats si.....good luck on trying to fix the deck lad....i wouldn't have the patience to try that...keep us updated son

northerner - 2013-04-14 12:38

Cheers mate   Well I've got plenty of patience so fingers crossed Just ordered belts so hope to have it running by next weekend

Good Find if you got it for a nice price the 990 is meant to be the daddy of Aiwas isn't it? certainly goes for big bucks on epay!

lav.loo - 2013-04-14 14:28

one of Aiwa's best imo Si, congrats on the pick up

northerner - 2013-04-14 14:35

Yep defo got it for a nice price, I only do bargains me

mitchelljames - 2013-04-14 14:39

Is this about the size of an m70 Si ?

northerner - 2013-04-14 14:42

I haven't had them sat side by side yet but they're probably about the same, maybe a little bigger, and heavy. When i put it back together I'll do a pic if them side by side so you can see

deech - 2013-04-15 02:03

Another Clash box and i have none !

Not fair Northerner

Sweet looking box mate ! Make it sing again

northerner - 2013-04-15 04:45

Thanks Deech!  Got a selection of belts ordered and just had delivered a nice accessory I'll show in the finished pics

Wow that Aiwa looks yellow!   Of the 990's around most seem to be not fully functioning!...hoping mine soon will be ...fingers crossed!

So they're about the same size, Aiwa just a tad taller.

northerner - 2013-04-16 04:57

Selection of belts just arrived in the post at work (super fast delivery!) will have to see if i can sneak off to my shed after work tonight and try them out.

They're laughing at me at work again...they've never seen someone excited to get a small bag of rubber bands before

jt.techno - 2014-05-21 08:54

Hi Northerner - did you ever get this working again - the tape deck?  Just wondering (as I am awaiting one in the mail shortly)

northerner - 2014-05-21 09:43

I managed the rebelting ok but the gear box was shagged. Dave/Docs had a go at the gear box and got it working apart from FF as it would've needed a new cog. But it soon seized up again I'm afraid. Such a stupid over complicated design with cogs prone to fail! Great sounding box though! Need someone to part one out and get the right replacement cog. I'd guess 90% of UK 990's have duff decks lol

tster - 2014-05-21 09:59

What a beauty Si congrats!

docs - 2014-05-21 10:46

Yes yours was just unfortunately needing a new cog and any sign of REW/FF being pressed will have affected its use. Shame really because when working they are a beautiful deck. JT Techno there are some golden rules with this deck that you only find out when it is too late. Once you know them by learning on the deck you can crack it quite quickly. I actually love this deck !

jt.techno - 2014-05-21 11:16

Thanks Docs ... I'll see what state it's in and then may be asking you for advice :-)

jt.techno - 2014-05-21 12:53

... and Si, what was the accessory that you were going to show in the finished pics ... I'm intrigued :-)

northerner - 2014-05-21 14:12

That would be might light up Aiwa sign
