My latest, Pioneer

michiel - 2013-06-04 01:13

Got this nice Pioneer SK-909L last evening! Can really recommend this box, it sounds special. Sounds so clear, perfect for modern dance music Lots of highs. Really clear sound!

Its dusty, especial behind the speaker grills lol, but it looks pretty good. Everything works, except the belts are gone. Anyone got experience changing these belts? Should I take of the back or the front of the box? Don't think this is going to be a easy one.... Hope you like it

stereo.mad - 2013-06-04 02:30

Nice addition to your collection......
Hopefully I have one on its way

northerner - 2013-06-04 03:00

Congrats...a fab looking box, slightly bonkers but awesome with it

brutus442 - 2013-06-04 04:04

That's a beauty!

radio.raheem - 2013-06-04 05:15

Congrats michiel....you are right about the highs....i say take this to a tech...i have done a few ....sorry to say it's a total Pita to work on...i wouldn't do another...

michiel - 2013-06-04 07:42

Hey Guys thanks for your nice comments! I'm still very happy with the box! Did some cleaning today and its pretty mint underneath all the dust. Got most of it out of the speaker grills with the vacuum cleaner  Glad it turns out so well, as its my most expensive box ever! Paid a whopping 140 euros for it!

I don't know any tech...but fixing boxes is my main fun part of the hobby. I will reserve a couple of days in a row especially to fix this box. Gonna be a nice holiday experience i guess

deliverance - 2013-06-04 07:44

hell thats a bargain at 140 euros !       you jammy basket

northerner - 2013-06-04 08:00

140 euros is about £120...I think even I would've stretched to that if one came up!...bargain!!

lav.loo - 2013-06-04 08:21

I was lucky enough to pick a minty one of these up at a carboot sale for £10 some years back. one of my biggest regrets was getting rid of it, congrats on an awesome box Michiel

radio.raheem - 2013-06-04 08:37

i had 3 for about £30 each.. my very first one cost about £450 though....i remember the forum going mental because of the price i paid lol...i didn't dare confess it was me..

from memory michiel the front comes off the top and the back....i'll try and find a service manual for you if i can...it makes it much easier to work on lad

my last one i sold for £130 i think mint and new belts...it really hurt but it was pointless it just sitting there

lav.loo - 2013-06-04 10:04

£450 is a lot to pay Reno, what about the one on epay a few month back that sold for about £1500 if I remember right

deech - 2013-06-04 10:12

Nice grab Michiel.Well done.

redbenjoe - 2013-06-04 10:44

you scored one of the worlds best boxes at a very very low price -

nice going

michiel - 2013-06-04 10:49

Seems like I paid a good average price for it. I was the highest bidder for a couple of days on a local auction site, so the seller decided to sell it. He was expecting something like 120 euros for it. So he was happy. Think it's worth what I paid for it. It is a special quality box, but it isn't really big (but it is heavvy!) and the FM stops at 104 MHz... Don't like that, because my inhouse fm station (fm usb plug/pc and nas full of mp3's) transmits on 107.5.. I can adjust it, but have to adjust all my boxes again if I do lol...

What really amazes me is the amount of noise these 4 little speakers produce. This is one of the boxes you have to check the volume switch before turning it on!  it's almost in the same league as the hk-9000! I love it

Would be really cool if you could find a service manual for it Raheem! Been looking for it,  havent found it yet. I found belt sizes on the turntable site for the SK-900 model guess these are the same. Shame you guys sold it, but well... There are many nice boxes out there!

They didn't complain yet lol  But I got lots of Lidl rechargeable D cells, so I take them outside regularly.

wow was it really that difficult raheem? i'd have guessed it would have a quality tape mech that comes out fairly easily? i guess not!

the hardest one i ever did was a sanyo M9998 with a jammed tape mech......now that's another story lol, it was very difficult to access let alone reassemble - i did it though & that was about 1981

that pioneer is a real beauty though love the look of it

radio.raheem - 2013-06-04 16:35

hi nick the belt change is easy mate its just getting to them lol sanyo m9998 took one look and out it went haha....im not that skilled but a few have struggled with the 909

nickdoofah - 2013-06-04 16:45

well i've been serviceing & repairing cassette decks & portables since i was 15 in 1981 & nothing has been anywhere near as difficult as that sanyo - we had a sort of tech guy at the boarding school (it was another students M9998) & he said no way would he touch it! i just thought it would be easy until i got the mech out & saw around 3 layers of mechanics & electronics.........that box had a lovely semi servo driven action to it! took around 3 hours to reassemble it, freeing the mech was easy & it was still working when i left in 83!

really not sure i'd try one again though

love the quality japanese mechs - they really did push the cassette medium to it's limits & many of them were capable of amazing qaulity recordings which still survive today in my special box of tapes!

!

i have techs where i live nick what really peeves me off they just cant be bothered anymore....i have about 30 radios that need fixing and id pay well...most just need belts or simple things like that....the sad thing is im probably going to dump them....because in about a month im thinking of moving a bedsit is no good for somebody nearly blind ....im always falling over..last time i nearly broke my arm...actually i'll probably leave them here..the council can send me a bill....btw do you live in the uk lad i read about you're health must be a bitch coping with that mate

michiel - 2013-06-05 01:28

Wel, I'm just gonna try to replace the belts some day. If I take enough time it shouldn't be a problem I guess. So far I've done 15 boxes and all of them survived  From the outside it looks like this box had some good designers working on it, so the inside must be okay too

Really like to play with the deck. It has some nice features like the automatic repeat. Am really motivated to get it going again haha

andyboombox - 2013-06-05 02:40

Hi Tim, yes I saw your link! I was still trying to understand the site. It seems like its a paper version and they don't ship to Europe. Its a little vague, they do state a shipping time for outside the US though...

I've also found this one, but some pages are missing. The pages how to disassemble the box

http://elektrotanya.com/pionee...9l.pdf/download.html

btw, youre not really gonna dump your boxes are you? You will regret it for sure! Just hang them against the wall so you wont break any body parts over them! I've got them in rows of 7 pieces from floor to top. It looks great too!

Haha, the M90 is very, very high on my wish list! I wasn't looking for the Pioneer at all, but it just came by. But I'm not allowed to get a M90 yet. Its going to be my present if I quit smoking for long enough time and have saved enough money to get one A nice mind f*ck isn't it lol...

andyboombox - 2013-06-05 05:28

well mate i wish i could just happen accross a 909 lol.....the m90 is a terrific radio as any pre owner or current owner will tell you here, but with hindsight i would probably have preferred the pioneer-hey reno you should have pushed your pioneer harder to me on that day
