Fixing Schneil's Sharp GF9191

northerner - 2013-06-23 11:16

So because I'm such a helpful fella I agreed to fix newbie Schneil's Sharp GF9191 in exchange for a few beers and even arranged for my sister to bring the box up to me.  It arrived Friday night, stayed the weekend (lol) and has gone back this afternoon so Neil should be able to pick it up tomorrow.

The deck was knacked, it sounded crackly, and the vu meters were uneven, it was also a bit grubby...so the usual problems.

I said I'd post some pics to show Neil what I'd done so here they are:

 1. Box opened up

2. Deck removed

Photo 22-06-2013 14 43 58

3. Plate removed from back of the deck to get the flywheel with its gunky tyre out...cleaned up and replaced with some silicon tubing.  Also replaced the main deck tyre/wheel as well as it was very unevenly worn and was pulling the tape off line.  Cleaned the heads as well, and realigned the play head as it was playing really muffled.

4. All sliders and switches thoroughly switch cleaned

Photo 22-06-2013 16 52 23

5. Neil this is the record bar which you should always clean on a box, sits behind the tape deck in this machine.

6. Filthy woofers cleaned and repainted

7. The main case ready for reassembly after a thorough cleaning

8. The front got a bath and did a bit of sun-bathing

9. Reassembled and now fully working sitting in front of mine Photo 23-06-2013 10 43 34

Hope you enjoy Neil!...now to open one of those beers

Thankyou again Si, you're a star!

Just noticed my pink towel in the background on the above picture

Can't wait to get it back and play some tunes on it.

I'm also glad that after all the years on top of a wardrobe, a bit of TLC and it scrubs up well.

Have another beer, you really deserve it

mitchelljames - 2013-06-23 12:01

northerner - 2013-06-23 12:18

northerner - 2013-06-23 12:21

Happy to do it Neil...you might not be a collector as such (yet!) but you clearly have a long time love of your family boomboxes so happy to help with the new addition to the family

northerner - 2013-06-23 13:00

There is a buzz to fixing these things up and getting them booming again...it's almost as much fun fixing someone else's as fixing my own...same sense of pride and achievement you just don't get to enjoy it afterwards lol

Always  nice to see members helping each other.

Wish i had nortnherner near me too !

northerner - 2013-06-24 14:10

Well I'll move to Greece then I can get up earlier than you and beat you to all those awesome boxes you keep finding!

deech - 2013-06-24 14:21

I could live with that if i was to find a collector here and exchange boxes

on a regular basis

jt.techno - 2013-09-14 12:33

Re the painting of woofers, any particular type/application of paint you use/recommend? I also heard of some using bleach - not sure what your thoughts are here re best method of restoration?

northerner - 2013-09-14 12:51

I use acrylic artists paint as its not too wet, colours well, dries quick, and can be mixed to any colour. Apply it thinly with a wide artists brush. Done most of mine with no I'll effects. Makes em look like new

driptip - 2013-09-14 12:54

great job northerner,  i am glad we have you on our side.

jt.techno - 2013-09-14 13:14

Great tip - many thanks :-)

jt.techno - 2013-09-16 09:13

Another question re the 9191 that I am restoring ... I notice when amp is on but nothing selected to play, that I get a sound (out of left speakers mainly) that sounds like the wind blowing across a microphone on an outside broadcast. Is this likely to be the circuitry on its way out or just because I haven't yet gone around everything with switch cleaner? It dies down a bit when music piped through but is still noticeable on low volumes or gaps in tracks etc.
I tried fiddling with mic mixing on/off, other switches etc. but it remains a constant problem.
Any ideas gratefully received :-)

northerner - 2013-09-16 09:23

Hard to tell but its amazing what proper switch cleaning will sort...I had a Hitachi that did absolutely nothing but give a very loud buzz when switched on. No lights no playback no tape movement. Gave it the old switch cleaning treatment and everything then worked perfectly!

jt.techno - 2013-09-26 08:29

What do you use for switch cleaning? I have used "Servisol Super 10 Switch Cleaning Lubricant" but I am finding I still have a crackling/popping sound out of the left audio channel even though I have thoroughly cleaned all switches, sliders and the internal record bar. This happens even when volume sliders are at zero, and on both speakers or headphones (speaker auto cuts out when headphone jack inserted). It happens whatever switch settings are selected i.e. Stereo Wide, Stereo, Mono, Mic mixing on/off, Mic mixing pot rotated left or right, loudness on/off, edit pressed/released etc. etc.
I wonder if I have a dying audio circuit - the annoying thing was that it didn't have this problem when I first tried it out after receiving it but seemed to develop the problem after a few uses :-(
Any ideas welcome - problem sounds exactly as Farid's first video from his similar problem post.

northerner - 2013-09-26 08:47

Mmmm

You're using the right stuff

If it happens all the time in all settings then maybe the record bar needs a bit more of a clean would be my best guess...did you whip the deck out to get to the bar properly?  I always clean the headphone socket too as the audio goes through it.

Bit of a concern that it didn't do it at first tho?...if the above doesn't sort it then you need someone with electronics knowledge and that aint me

surely cause in skyfall he's offered macallan 50 year by the villain?

jt.techno - 2013-09-26 14:21

Took it all apart again and re cleaned the record bar thoroughly but problem still there. I wonder if maybe the left volume slider is cream crackered as the crackling sometimes changes a bit when I move it, although could just be me in paranoid mode - audio from right channel always perfect - audio from left channel crackly/popping and fuzzy when bits of music are heard - even tried it on just radio with whole cassette mechanism and also front panel with speakers removed from the box to try and eliminate cassette heads solder joints etc. and problem same via headphones - run out of ideas now - will probably start looking for another 9191 to replace it - if anybody is thinking of passing one on...

jt.techno - 2013-09-26 14:23

Thank you Northerner and Metad for your pointers but both dead ends currently for this 9191 :-(

northerner - 2013-09-26 14:38

Run out of ideas here too I'm afraid.

I think mitchelljames had one that he was willing to sell...at least I think it was him!

I have one but would never sell, even refused to sell it to The Clash. Got another on its way too but that's going to be a project box

There must be a more techie answer to the problem?....anyone?

Hi, with what did you clean the speakers, to avoid damage, and what paint did you use and recommend for painting the speakers?

thanks

shane

ps, do you carry servicing for a fee and if so ball park figure?

northerner - 2013-10-16 12:56

Speakers you have to be gentle with...I use a very soft paint brush to get any dirt off but they're generally stained or faded so I paint them with acrylic artists paint as it goes on thin and relatively dry using a wide soft artists brush.

As for servicing...where are you in the UK cos I'm in North Yorkshire...and what condition is your 9191 in?

I live in Norfolk, but have friends in both Doncaster and Huddersfield, I also get around the county on a fairly regular basis and would have no issue dropping off to you.

reasonable condition would be my answer but the deck does chew up tapes and guess that needs a serious service. I can get the unit apart although I have to say it's been a lot of years since I last striped one down. So in a nut shell, a good clean, service to cassette deck, belts pinch roller and I bet flywheel.

northerner - 2013-10-16 13:47

A standard GF service then lol

I don't mind doing it but I'd rather do it for goods than cash like some nice reels or parts or other such boombox related stuff...money is boring

Cheers, sadly I have but one boom box, the one in question, I have only a few tapes, so not really sure what I have to offer in return for the work? I prefer the barter system but at this stage I am limited as to what I can offer... I shall give it some further thought though lol

northerner - 2013-10-16 14:20

Only one!!!....that's just weird!...and there was me thinking I was being really restrained only having about twenty lol To be fair, if you're only wanting one then a 9191 is great one to choose

Well I love most 80's stuff plus I like a bit of vinyl too if that helps

So what made you suddenly buy a boombox? What's your boombox history?...we're always interested to know why someone gets into this obsession

shane - 2013-10-16 14:37

Back in around 1978 I was looking through my mums mail order catalogue and I saw the GF9191 it reached out and grabbed me, I had to have it, no question, I was 17 and I paid weekly for it, I had it till 1989 when it went wrong, without thinking I done the unthinkable, outed it. Move forward 24 years and looking back I realised this item, and one other, a Sharp Optonica turntable, were my first two ventures into the world of HiFi. Regrets, I've had a few... Getting rid of these two items now really saddens me, therefor I set out to rectify this. All I need is the turntable, no vinyl to play on it but that can be purchased once I have sorted that (may not be able to), hopefully. The boombox will go in the conservatory and the few tapes remaining will get good use. How we look back as we move forward... Lol

northerner - 2013-10-16 14:44

Cool story, I think most of us have similar ones...would be great to get the turntable and boombox back together. Was your turntable an upright one? My turntable is a Sharp VZ2000 which is like the love child of the two lol

shane - 2013-10-16 15:22

No it was the RP7100 with APLD a good looking deck that would sit nicely in any lounge in the land, also purchased from a catalogue, about a year after the GF. sadly my mistake was to move with the times, out with tape and vinyl, in with CD and then iPods, curse that compressed sound. Oh the need for a tardis...

shane - 2013-10-16 15:30

I always worried the vibration from the speakers would jolt the stylus on the record, guess I had that wrong...

northerner - 2013-10-17 07:04

Originally Posted by SHANE:

They turned down the bass on it to prevent this...it sounds great with certain types of music but a bit crappy with others due to the lack of bass...put a bit of Kraftwerk on the turntable and it sounds great but put a bit of Knife Party on and it'll sound really lame lol...I love the old VZ tho despite this slight limitation

shane - 2013-10-17 07:12

It does have those classic looks and yes, I can imagine now days, a real talking point.

autoreverser - 2014-05-16 10:10

great restoring, seriously, respect !

i apprechiate that you're not overdoing it

now (...and AO the bagger predicted it...) i decided to restore my 9191 as well, as it's for me one of the nicest units i ever had and will probably be the only box besides a daily-use beach-kaboom i'm gonna keep.

besides belts mine also needs a new motor (as i posted in the "parts for sale"-departement even found a dealer with fair prices on mabuchi-motors), idler etc, worst is the missing battery-lid as there's almost no other one matching the 9191, but i'll get one one day - anybody with a 3D-printer here ??? there's a need for those !

andyboombox - 2014-05-19 05:27

does anyone know what happened to shneil?not heard from him in agesare you still in touch with him si?

schneil - 2014-05-19 10:19

Hello everyone

I've got a few other things on at the moment, so not been on here much.

However my Sharp 9191 is looking the part in my diningroom.  Also my JVC 656 is in daily use in the kitchen.  Also Andy that Panny box you sorted me out is a monster!

I might have a Panny egg for sale soon.  It's pretty mint, just needs a clean.  Anyone interested?

northerner - 2014-05-19 13:59

Crikey he's still alive! Glad the 9191 is still holding out Neil

Panny egg?...err I'd rather have a fried one

andyboombox - 2014-07-09 05:42

si-my new 9191-i have an old middle from a sharp gx 300 at home with a working deck-is it likely this utilised the same idler tyre arrangement as the 9191?if so i can rob it from that for mine?????

andyboombox - 2014-07-09 05:44

what egg is that buddy?give me a call!07748386841 thats my new number-maybe we can hook up againglad you still like your panny too neil
