A 1983 Montg Wards desktop stereo...

blakespot - 2013-07-10 15:48

Maybe this forum can help me. I am trying to find any sort of full picture, info of the first stereo I ever owned, given me as a birthday present in May 1983.

Here is a photo of its left edge:

Does anyone know what model it is? Thanks!

No speakers to it?

Yes, it had two speakers to it -- they did not attach to the unit -- it's not a boom box, but they were the same height and depth. There's a tiny chance it was a Sears unit, but I am pretty sure it came from Wards, and definitely was purchased in May 1983.

Hmm...

Sorry - yes, it almost certainly came from Montgomery Wards - slight possibility of Sears. Was not a mobile stereo -- was what would now be called a "bookshelf" system, I guess, though it's a bit wider than, say, my current Tivoli.

Thanks

Try wishbookweb.com... They have a bunch of Sears and Wards catalogs scanned and posted. Or radioshackcatalogs.com if it might be a Realistic/Clarinette...

Thank you! While I did not find the unit at the Wishbook website, what they did offer lead me to conclude it was the 1982 Sears Christmas catalog I needed, and a Google search brought me to it at Wishbook's own Flickr account. And, lo, there I found the first stereo I ever owned, the little 10-watt unit at the bottom left of this page:

It was a Sears LXI unit that I received for my 11th birthday, in May 1983. I used it constantly until it happened to die in the summer of 1986. I loved that thing.

Thank you.

I have seen the LXI brand at thrifts, but not on a mini compo, I'll keep an eye out. Good luck in your search.
