smeats1976 - 2013-06-28 10:58

Got this on ebay (fairly) cheap. Not working, a bit tatty for spares or repair.

Dead on arrival! Grubby buttons!

Grills rusty and dented

speakers fooked!

Good excuse for new speakers!! I chose these Kenwoods after reading an old thread on here where a member had used them to improve his GF 777,(If its good enough for him, its good enough for me!) found 2 pairs of used ones for a good price again on ebay.

Had no joy getting the box to power up (no schematic diagram or service manual) anyone who knows where to get this please tell me!

I bought a 15v DC adapter from a car boot sale for 50p pluged it in and got radio, then one casstte player and half the disco lights!! After a bit of switch cleaning I got line in for mp3 player too. Here's the disolite's guts for anyone Interested!

After some soldering and bridging 4 different cracks on the PCB, 5 lights remain off (blown LEDs maybe? anyone??)

Here's how I tarted it up be for reassembling.

Painted the grills black and the buttons gold

new speakers in!

Bling Bling! Used this Gold Sticker sheet to pimp the speaker surrounds like on some other discolite models.

Still a few things needing to be done but I'm pleased with it so far, I've wanted one of these for ages now but they are usually way out of my price range! I know these take a lot of stick about sounding crap but Since the new Kenwoods have been in it's really loud and clear and I believe it can hold its own against almost any other box! yes it vibrates too much and seems to Fart out the bass when you go loud but this could be fixed with dynamat or/and a homemade gasket. There will always be a somthing I can do to improve this box. Anyway heres how it looks so far!

Wow! My first time seeing one in action! That is PIMP! Those buttons on the sticks looks like a sculpture. Great job.

Good work mate.

Surprised at how empty it was inside.

Thanks for all your comments guys!

BronxBomber, because of Madonna and Lady GaGa Your Model is the really desirable one! If I had that version with the lights in the centre then I would have probably tried to have them repaired rather than replaced! I bet if you tried a few repair shops It would be a cheap fix to repair the lights, I think its just different coloured 15v LEDs behind a big lens.

Of course, it up to you to decide dude!

cheers

Great work and upgrade.....looks much better with those kenwoods....no so cheap looking...and they match with some of the blue on the unit itself,....so it looks as if it came that way

Hi Driptip, see the link above for the paint I used on the buttons, I also seen a video on Youtube where a guy tested loads of different paints and stuff including expensive stuff like liquid gold and real gold leaf, see his results here

hope this helps

Thanks Blaster, I would like to say that was planned but I was just luck! I searched here for speaker up grades for 777s on S2go  and then seen these cheap on ebay!
