exceptions to the rule?

smeats1976 - 2013-10-05 02:37

I'm sure like me, you have some unwritten rules about what you would or wouldn't have in your collection. For example "no eggs" or "no 3 pieces" and "nothing post 1990"! Perhaps you would say "no monos" but give a home to a jvc rc 550

JVC RC-550

I never thought I would want a CD playing box untill I saw this

cdx-931

what are you guys exceptions to the rule?

deech - 2013-10-05 02:46

For me there are no exceptions !

Space is the limit !

deech - 2013-10-05 02:46

Oh and that Lasonic box is one big fat mamma !!

smeats1976 - 2013-10-05 02:58

haha! so if space was not an issue, would you take home every box you take a photo of deech?

i was not a lover of 3 piecers at first but the pc-5 , pc-55 ,  sony fh-77 , dt-680 and such sound good .

nickfish - 2013-10-05 04:05

The classic design of 70's and 80's one piece boxes is undeniable and although a single enclosure is a huge compromise for sound quality and bass , we make do because they look so good. To rule out 3 piecers and even eggs is a big mistake if you are pursuing good sound quality. Separate speaker enclosures are better. Fact. Only you can decide what you like and what for you defines a boombox. For me, i like them all except mini's unless they have some clever design or features. I even like kabooms! Everything has its place and purpose.

smeats1976 - 2013-10-05 04:07

I agree Del and Nick, I'm not a fan of 3 piece boxes either but you can't deny that their sound quality is generally much better than one piece boxes! I'd make an exception for a Toshiba WX-1 because it doen't look like a 3 piece when its put together. I may try a Panny egg or a Kaboom one day but there is always a vintage box I want more!

seb968 - 2013-10-05 04:46

Some 3 piece boxes are very good; love my Sharp QT-90. I have come across a few 4 piece portables as well, the most desirable of which being my uncle's Sansui CP-7. Some of these systems look fantastic but some are not particularly portable. My other half has an egg shaped Panasonic CD, radio cassette, she loves it. So as Nicfish says “Everything has its place and purpose.” I’m with deech when he says there are no limits, except it has to appeal to me. (Oh and I am always short of space)

As for one piece 70’s early 80’s designs, they are the most aesthetically pleasing, and probably more robust when it comes to carrying them arround than a 3 piece.

deliverance - 2013-10-05 04:57

agreed it is not practical to carry three piecers about for sure .    i like the mini hi-fi look when you seperate the pc-5/55 the 55 has one of the best decks going .

Yeah that PC-55 has a very good deck. Had to do a repair job on one once (Speed control on the capstan motor had gone loopy!) Was very impressed with the build quality, cast alloy head mounting block  and capstan bearings. This level of quality was seen in JVC's up-market home decks (such as the TD-V66). Was blown away impressed with the sound quality too. Piped the little cassette deck into the back of the hi-fi system and it gave the Denon home deck that I was using at the time a run for it's money.Great LCD display as well.

deliverance - 2013-10-05 05:57

yep they are a belter seb .    just waiting for my display fuse lamps to come from the states .

northerner - 2013-10-05 06:00

Late 70's early 80's one piecers for me please...had a Sanyo C7 and it sounded great but just didn't really do it for me so I traded it. I know 3 piecers will likely sound better but if I wanted the best sound quality I'd just buy a hifi...don't have any hifi gear either these days. Just can't beat the thrill of owning a nice mid size chrome beast

Saying that, of course the rules for wild finds are different...I'd blag anything decent then move it on if I didn't warm to it.

I like big chunky monos tho

deliverance - 2013-10-05 06:09

agreed in part si ,  but there is nothing worse than listening to a crap sounding box .

northerner - 2013-10-05 06:25

Very true

brutus442 - 2013-10-05 06:52

Amen....all m70's and the like should go in the bin haha

radio.raheem - 2013-10-05 09:30

If it makes you feel any better guys...the m70 sounds better than my panasonic FD 80 but she is a personal grail... so i guess there are exeptions even for me

redbenjoe - 2013-10-05 11:54

there are eggs like the panny 707

and awesome 3 piecers like the panny rx6400

and tiny minis like the sansui 700

so-----even with a lack of space or funds -

there are hundreds of great boxes with their own unique sounds-

these non-traditional models deserve lots of respect and attention

like the surround mode on the 707 is like NOTHING ELSE on ANY box

we need a boombox  'rental library' -

so we can hear and use all the good boxes that we cant afford-

or have no space for -

just to have these experiences.

seb968 - 2013-10-05 17:04

Fantastic idea!

redbenjoe - 2013-10-05 20:02

come to think of it --there IS such a place  !!

a member here owns it -- its in germany -name is roddy-

sold him a few boxes --

my guess is that he owns & rents every box of every type and size thats

worth listening to

dont have the link handy -

but plenty of folks here do

radio.raheem - 2013-10-06 16:10

Agree with redbenjoe....im lucky i have had 99 perencent of the boxes...you shouldn't let the fact that it's an egg or a 3 peice put you off...

im also lucky i have a boxed dt707 simply the best egg made....the surround as ira say's is like no other box
