Goldstar opinions please :)

northerner - 2013-10-04 11:37

Anyone know anything about Goldstar boxes specifically the TSR640 as we don't get them here in the UK?

michiel - 2013-10-04 11:48

I can remember from when I was a kid that having a Goldstar radio/msx computer/etc was very uncool.

northerner - 2013-10-04 12:10

I don't mind uncool lol what's it sound like tho? Think it looks pretty darned cool myself

michiel - 2013-10-04 12:15

Try it out! AudioSonic was also really uncool that time. Now I think it's awesome.  Think Goldstar is the current LG... Hope someone can tell us more about it!

northerner - 2013-10-04 12:19

Yeh I found that Goldstar became LG but not a lot else. Really want to know about this box

michiel - 2013-10-04 12:38

When I google it, it looks like Jens got one some time ago.. Had the one in your pic in my follow list on eBay btw. So I liked it too probably lol

northerner - 2013-10-04 13:39

Yeh I found Jens' thread. I couldn't resist this one I'm afraid as it was cheap, looked great, and is really rare in the UK. Seller was an audio buff who has plenty of experience of worldwide shipping too. Very quick communication so fingers crossed its a goodun

bison - 2013-10-04 13:50

Si,i would buy it,very toshibalike ,a lot of the akas are for some reason, reminds me of my conic.

The seller is okay. Also got a box from him/her. All went well. Let know how it is!

HERE ITS IS UNDER PROSONIC

northerner - 2013-10-04 14:54

I just fancied something different to the usual boxes that do the rounds in UK. Good to hear that you've dealt with the seller before Michiel.

I'm on a box buying ban at the moment but hey ho lol

I'm on a ban too....I've already broke it and I want more! This hobby is an addiction! I need help!

michiel - 2013-10-04 15:46

Lol I got my 60th bbx this week.. that's what's happens if you're single...

northerner - 2013-10-04 16:18

Breaking a ban seems to be the norm lol

60 boxes Michiel?...crikey...I've kinda stuck to no more than 20, sold a few to keep it manageable. I'd need a lot more shelves for 60!!

Listening to my M70 right now...love this machine!

Looking forward to my first Goldstar tho

michiel - 2013-10-04 16:42

Yeah 60 is to many. Think I will settle with 40 good ones max. But it's nice to discover lots of boxes and let them go when bored. Its also a good opportunity to learn what kind of boxes I really like.

The M70 is also my favorite! I seem to like jvc a lot in general. At the moment I'm listening to the 838. A good night box and also a keeper

Glad I didn't put my sniper bot on the Goldstar haha. Think you will be really happy with it. The speakers look like its quit a powerfull box!

northerner - 2013-10-04 16:45

I'd like an 838 if I found one cheap enough....except I'm still on a buying ban...lol

smeats1976 - 2013-10-04 16:50

damn near put a cheeky offer on a 838 2 weeks ago Si, £100 or nearest offer! would you be tempted at that price?

michiel - 2013-10-04 17:01

Got my 838 for 70 euros locally. To my surprise it was fully working, even the cassette belts were still okay. And it was near mint. Didn't even open the box.

They are not as powerfull as the M70 and it feels lighter. But this biphonic thing sounds really cool. Wish the M70 has this option!

smeats1976 - 2013-10-04 17:10

70 Euros for a good one is a good deal Michiel! I want one cos it's an early boombox and I don't have a 70s box yet. I'm seeing boxes I want all the time though!

michiel - 2013-10-04 17:28

for a proper 70s box I would recommend to get a Sanyo M9994K. That's a really great classic 70s box with very good sound. It also got no sliders, so less change there will be problems with it. It beats the 838 in everything

Just be aware that the K version is the one to get. It has a very effective loudness button. The normal version only has an useless mid-tone button.

Here is mine playing

smeats1976 - 2013-10-04 17:41

just looked at some Sanyo M9994K pics and i like it I was going to ask if anyone could recommend some 70s boxes but I think this or a Sharp gf 9191 or jvc 838 would be a good choice, just keep my eyes open for what comes first!

soundboy - 2013-10-04 19:29

funny, when I stop buying boom box's I buy rare collectable cassette tapes from half way around the world and yes i am single this type of thing would not be possible any other way... ha ha  ha

besides my parents decided to spend my inhairitance and i decided they wont get grandchildren it a win win lol

northerner - 2013-10-05 00:36

I think any of those 3 are an excellent choice. They'd have to be a cheap deal for me as the only way I can get away with buying anything on my ban is to sell an existing box for more money than the purchase! If I were single I'd probably have 60 boxes too!

I d go for the 838 first !! Not that i dont like the 9994 but never owned one !!

michiel - 2013-10-05 02:15

I would trade my 838 for a second M9994 without any hesitation

northerner - 2013-10-05 02:16

Come on Deech you must've had a Goldstar...what's you're opinion of them?

deech - 2013-10-05 02:39

I never owned a big Goldstar Simon !

The only goldstar i have is the one pictured in this post !

http://REPLACEMENT ERROR/topic/two-70s-bboxes

Its sound is very warm and believe me it

can get really Loud !! Its 70s looks imo are not so nice

but it is the only box i have and has side speakers !!

If you d ask me about 2 Goldstars to have i d say  first the TSR 580

and second  the TSR 800

Now I m wicked enough to want to own boxes from defunkt

vintage electronics Companies . Goldstar is one of them (TODAY LG).

I m really charmed when i find boxes from defunkt korean companies

and the TSR 640 you got is a very nice example also and i would of bought

it without any hesitation too !!

smeats1976 - 2013-10-05 02:40

Love the 70s Disco Funk music Michiel! very fitting for that era of box

I'd have 60 boxes too by now if it wasn't for my other half!

Only 4 minutes. Don't know if it's downloadable. It's a rather rare tape, but you could rip it of yt. Or send me a pm with your mail so I can send it to you. It will be in m4a format and the same quality as the sound in the clip. So far from hifi lol.

Im going really off topic here, srry Si.

smeats1976 - 2013-10-05 03:19

Thanks for the offer Michiel, I was hoping it was a bit longer! I can download it of your clip.  I have has a few disco/funk mixes off of soundcloud, some original, some retro

northerner - 2013-10-05 04:58

northerner - 2013-10-05 05:43

It's coming from Germany...not sure how long it'll take but it doesn't seem to take much longer than just within the UK. Looking forward to it

northerner - 2013-10-06 10:26

That's an 800, Del rates that one. No one seems to have a 640 tho...not sure whether that's a good sign or a bad one lol
