Aiwa TPR-950

seb968 - 2013-10-10 11:40

Hello everyone

I found this Aiwa TPR-950H on ebay. I like the lookof it but just wonderd how much I should bid for it. I have not used one of these before so it is a shot in the dark. Is the machine as good as it looks? I'm after a large decent retro machine for my collection, how does it compare to others? The tape deck dosn't work but I can get these going. I would be vey gratefull for any advice.

ebay item number is 380737805074

These are a longtime favourite of ours.  'Cassette not working' usually means a new belt, not such an easy task with these but I suspect it's not beneath your skills.

I'd go max £200 on this.

seb968 - 2013-10-10 11:57

Thank you very much, good to know. There are many options open to me, don't want to rush into anything but don't want to miss out either!

redbenjoe - 2013-10-10 11:57

everything about the 950 is great -

the looks , the size , the solid build -

the bass is deep and the highs are very detailed

deliverance - 2013-10-10 11:58

as all ready stated a lovely box they sound great and on batteries nothing beats them .  the deck is not bad to do seb

docs - 2013-10-10 12:02

Don't think they are a 200 box and I've seen them go for significantly less. Ofcourse it depends on what you think it is worth to you... Me? since I'm watching this one I may put a bid in as I'm still looking out for one.

seb968 - 2013-10-10 12:06

This is great, thanks for all your thoughts. Good sound and good looks, very, very tempted....£200 will buy a lot though!

Would it compare in any way to a JVC M-70?

nickfish - 2013-10-10 12:44

I bought one fully working for £100 and another that needed belts for about £50 so I would advise against paying much over £100 to £120 for this one. They do come up regularly, so don't over do it.

They are wonderful machines with a lovely tone to the sound and an un-rivalled build quality.

seb968 - 2013-10-10 12:53

Cheers Nick

smeats1976 - 2013-10-10 12:53

seller's in my home town! pity he's not one of the "will not post" brigade or I'd be on it like a tramp on chips!

redbenjoe - 2013-10-10 12:57

these guys are right about the price -

this model is not rare --

you might want to wait till you see a 950 --all working

for that price - mint -

or for 100-150 if its just decent looking

seb968 - 2013-10-10 12:59

These are appear to be sort after machines, if I don't win it I will definately test the water with you lot again with the next machine I find, thanks for all your help.

deliverance - 2013-10-10 13:05

you should of not told us about the 950 seb as the vultures will be on a thermal waitng to swoop

seb968 - 2013-10-10 13:13

Chance I was willing to take.....

deliverance - 2013-10-10 13:14

northerner - 2013-10-10 13:17

Spotted it already

I live on eBay lol

seb968 - 2013-10-10 13:22

Do you like it Si ?

northerner - 2013-10-10 13:36

I know they're supposed to be good, they're definitely popular, and I really like my 990....I just have a slight phobia of black buttons. I don't know whether it looks a bit more 70's than 80's and that's what slightly turns me off them. I dunno, we all have different tastes and it just slightly doesn't do it for me...wouldn't stop me getting one if it was a bargain and it might grow on me if I'd heard one

radio.raheem - 2013-10-10 13:49

im bidding 300...your out seb....if there anything like the 880 you can't go wrong

radio.raheem - 2013-10-10 14:10

ohh and good luck seb...no more than 130 id say

seb968 - 2013-10-10 14:12

Well I'm in the lead at the moment but......I suppose thats what makes ebay so exciting (and frustrating! ). There are a few interesting things out there at the moment though, my watch list isa pretty full.

seb968 - 2013-10-10 14:15

Cheers radio raheem

radio.raheem - 2013-10-10 14:16

One lesson in life seb you should NEVER bid to early....that just drives the price up

seb968 - 2013-10-10 14:17

Hi Si

Is the 990 a lot different ? I'm not really up on Aiwas.

smeats1976 - 2013-10-10 14:18

Hi Seb, just wondering, is the 968 in your username to do with the Aiwa model?

seb968 - 2013-10-10 14:19

Thats a vey good point radio raheem.

seb968 - 2013-10-10 14:22

Hi Smeats

No it's just coincidence, it is actualy the 9th of 68, my birthday! Use it coz it's kind of catchy (and easy for my poor old brain to remember! )

northerner - 2013-10-10 14:24

The 990 is quality machine Seb...looks really classy rather than a street machine.  Has a proper line in and is one of my better sounding boxes.

northerner - 2013-10-10 14:25

You're one month younger than me Seb

seb968 - 2013-10-10 14:25

Thanks, I'll google that

lav.loo - 2013-10-10 14:32

The 950 sounds great and looks good but as mentioned above somewhere it looks a little too 70's with the black buttons which swirves me from it a little (just a little).

Still it gets great reviews and it's all about personal choice. Probably not as big as you would expect but built like an old barn house hope you bag it Seb.

Ah! That's an omen then Seb, you must get a TPR 968 matey, Its another great sounding box! my dad has taken a shine to mine and asked that I keep it at his garage workbench which is fine by me cos I'm often there and can listen to my tunes while working away and he listens to Elvis and Rock n Roll compilations when he's out there!

seb968 - 2013-10-10 14:39

Old timers! comes to us all eventualy

don't count me among the competitors. i love this box yet don't feel the need to get another one!  this said, i'd be grateful to anybody who could provide me with original aerials, as mine unfortunately are not

seb968 - 2013-10-11 08:52

Hi Samovar, getting new aerials is a pain, half of my machines have with replacement (mainly scavenged) aerials, perfectly functional but they don’t look right. You would think that there would be more new replacements available. If anyone knows of a source it would be good to know!

Glad that you love your machine, seems to be the general concencus of oppinion.......I shall give it another punt on the bidding!

deech - 2013-10-12 01:18

Seb this 950 is a cool box ! Good luck on getting it .

I m so curious how this auction will end .

The 955 is more elegant rarer though

as stereomad suggests !!
