Garage sale find yesterday

I was looking around for more traditional boomers but this caught my eye and I had to have it. Panasonic sg-610d solid state in fantastic condition, some very minor flaws cosmetically, functionally it is perfect, record player works great, antenna in tact, sound is what you would expect but not too bad actually. These don't come around every day, especially in this condition & I think I got a real fair deal after I was originally told it wasn't for sale (the guy who owned it was actually using it for people to try out his records in his shop after some knucklehead customer broke the arm
off his regular turntable). stoked on it, nice vintage unit. Pics a little dark but I think you can get the gist.

wow, now thats a classic , thanks for sharing.

Thanks, yeah it is pretty neat, was just listening to a couple of my old reggae 45's, has that vintage sound. It is acting a little squirrely, I thought I blew the thing up cus the sound just quit but the turntable was still spinning, if I plug in an external speaker like my headphone & then remove it, the sound would start coming out of the main speaker again. I think it needs some nice contact cleaner action, I opened the back & cleaned the dust out of the cabinet too...it was strange, working fine now. I really like it won't be replacing the beautiful 9191 I got this week  : )

Nice unit I like it !

Think you are right it needs a good clean with contact cleaner on the connections and dials etc.

Wow!
Makes the Sharp machines look big and clunky.

I've had a nice week with purchasing this one, a near mint fully working sharp 9191 and also an aiwa tpr 990. I haven't received the 990 yet but seems to be in really nice shape, tape player doesn't work which i'm not bothered by and there is an issue with some static in the balance knob causing some lower sound in the right speaker so I am hoping some nice contact cleaner will help...seller had not tried this).  I got it for a steal so I can't complain either way but it does look in really nice cosmetic condition and i'm pretty hopeful I can easily sort the static issue.

That turntable is just gorgeous, I love it.  Good choices on the boxes too

thanks northerner - i've officially fallen for the panasonic, my only wish is that it had a few more features but i guess that's not the point of the unit itself, it's a great conversation piece and how often do you find a 45 yr old radio w/ record player that works and is in beautiful cosmetic condition.  love it!  do you have any experience with the 990? i know that the tape player is a ball buster to fix so i'm gonna leave that alone (most likely will use it more for external devices through line-in) for now but wanted to see if that balance knob issue was common as well.  thanks!  btw-my 9191 is so sick, listening to my old reggae mixes & clash/big audio dynamite bootlegs on it brought back a lot of fond memories.

Yeh I got a minty 990 but the deck is screwed....Docs got it working for a little while but its that stupid gearbox...so over engineered. But sounds fabulous on line in, definitely one of my best sound boxes.  Love the 9191 too...got 3 here at the moment! One is in major life saving surgery at the moment lol

sonburn - 2013-10-14 13:50

awesome, really looking forward to gettin' my hands on the 990 and see what that beast has to offer...good luck with the 9191 on life support.

northerner - 2013-10-14 14:01

Lol...I think most would've pronounced this one dead but I say never let a good boombox die! I've spent maybe 5 or 6 hours just rebuilding the back case so far...I must be mad

sonburn - 2013-10-14 15:11

don't worry, i'm like that too...i've been wiping the plastic cover for the dial on the panasonic over & over again even though it's sparkling...i get obsessive about things i collect like that but it shows passion and fortitude...at least that's what i keep telling myself

andyboombox - 2014-04-30 03:27

i think these 'older' radios and phonographs warrant as much attention as boomboxes-they,like this one,can be awesome to own, and, like boxes will only appreciate in value and charm in the future-and after all,who doesnt want a portable record player?i love it
