When I bought it, neither of the decks works at all, one was hanging off as the plastic lug was snapped off and there were issues with some of the switches etc.

I took it apart carefully taking pictures as I went, I cleaned each and every switch with cotton buds and circuit board cleaner or pure alcohol on the worst ones. Once I had it apart I carefully took it apart layer by layer cleaning each circuit board as I went using circuit board cleaner after a 12V vacuum cleaner had carefully removed all the dust. The speakers that were not working was just a case of a clip that had come off at some point. The VU meters started again after a clean, I got the tape decks working perfectly after changing the bands (using elastic bands from shop) same as the counter . Biggest issue was fixing the lug that was snapped off that holds on one of the doors. But I worked out a perfect fix to do this you basically take a metal roll pin of the same size and then hold it with small curved pliers and heat one end up with a lighter. Then carefully push it into place in the plastic, keep putting the door on until you get a perfect fit. Then remove the roll pin stick a few drops of superglue into the hole and then secure the roll pin into its final resting place. It works perfectly and no way you could even tell a repair has been done. I then cleaned all the speakers front and rear with silicon spray to stop them tearing down the line and then slowly put it all back together. It has come out absolutely lovely and sounds great, looks almost perfect and has had a great service.

Great job! very well done indeed. It is always nice to see something great restored to how it should be.

The door fix you used, you should post pics of your method and of the item you use for others to use when they encounter the same issue.

Brilliant repair You're lug solution was splendid!

Did your 777 have any chrome rot? If so how did you remove it?

thebaron - 2013-11-02 19:12

No chrome rot, it was all filthy yellow but all cleaned up, I take it you mean on the plastic components? I have a couple of minor stains on the Aluminium trim around the front that did not come off with Alcohol, but did not want to use anything abrasive on them.

The door lug repair was a work of art, but if I get another one that needs fixing I will post all the instructions up with pictures. The metal roll pins are literally pennies each and it is a "better than new" fix. So if anyone has this common problem there is a solution and they are expandable you just hit something into them to widen the end for an absolutely perfect fit then heat them up, make the hole, and glue them in. But you only need a lighter so they go in slowly and steadily in the right place.

Thanks for the info thebaron. I'll have to keep the SS pins on memory for future repairs. Fortunately you didn't get the dreaded chrome rot!

Looks like this 777 just got out from the box

Nice example you got there baron !

brilliant restoration, the 777 looks like just out of the factory

Well done.

You don't seem to be a novice in boombox repairing. Getting the tape decks out of a GF-777 is hell of a task. (There is a very detailed manual for doing it in boomboxery).

On the sliders and pots, use only "Fader Lube" from the makers of deoxit. It cleans the switches as well as lubricates it, maintaining the firm smooth sliding action of the original sliders. Do not use cheap electrical contact cleaners on carbon sliders.
