Sharp GF9191 refurb part 2! (aka operation piss about with a bust box)

northerner - 2013-11-08 06:21

OK so operation 'Piss about with a bust box' continues...as a reminder this is the general state of the box when I got it

3

So the back has been rebuilt and resprayed (see http://REPLACEMENT ERROR/topic...1#360880846111362071)

Something blew (possibly the amp chip) when I put it back together so I saw this as an opportunity to do something different and use a nice new amp I had knocking around.  So I whipped all the innards out and we're aiming for a loud cool looking but completely non-standard box (all the parts are being kept for spares tho!)

So I then moved on to the front casing.

Its taken a lot of hours to rebuild the missing sections, repair all the broken parts (soooo many!), strengthen it where it was full of hairline cracks, remove the corroded chrome on the speaker rings, blank off the control holes, sand it then prime it.

Amp is fitted and tested with the original speakers using just good old line in which is what I use most of the time anyway and even with an open case it sounded good...hopefully it will sound even better when its all sealed.

I was thinking of putting an ipod dock in the front but it was so heavily cracked across all the thinner parts of the case around there that I just blanked it off.  I also didn't want to limit it to the iphone/ipod I have now so didn't want a tailored dock.  The other advantage is that it gives a bit more acreage for when I paint it!

Anyway, this is what it looks like now before it gets its full paint job

Missing corner rebuilt from scratch:

Just need to decide on a theme for the paint job, fit the sound reactive leds (obviously thats what all the holes are for!) and put it all together again.  Hope you like it

Cheers Seb, took some work that corner...its not just a blob of filler whittled down...its several pieces of plastic cut and trimmed to fit so that each edge is strong plastic rather than weaker filler...the filler is just a smoothing top coat.  And of course it all has to match up with the side and the back where it slots in...no quick fix lol

Yeah I could tell it was a b******* of a job from the picture of the origanal damage. What you have done is top notch!  Wish I could patch things up that well!

metad - 2013-11-08 09:05

In my opinion, it would be better to cover all of those holes for controls, to cover them from the top, to make it flat, but to leave those grooves, which separate the groups of the switches. Now it looks like an abandoned house. There is nothing wrong with the paint job all over the whole radio, but those "boarded-up" holes look bad, and ruin the perception of the whole object. To place the LEDs behind the clear tuner window would be better solution, but unfortunately it's too late.

bison - 2013-11-08 09:17

nice work with the filler Si,

it looks like its in primer..are you gonna change the colour?

northerner - 2013-11-08 09:20

Tuner window was scratched, covered in paint, and shattered in the middle at the bottom so was a non-starter.

I did consider blanking out all the holes and making it smooth but I thought I'd be taking too much character away...I'm gonna paint a design over the front and top anyway so thought the texture/relief might look cool. I might paint it and see...if it doesn't look right I'll smooth it off.

Bear in mind this is a £10 scrap box I'm just playing with, its no restoration job...just a bit of fun to see what I can do

shane - 2013-11-08 09:24

Filler job, WOW...

Cant wait to see the finished article.

a masterpiece, as usual

northerner - 2013-11-08 09:27

Yeh that's just primer...got a few cans ready...just not sure what to put on it

Even so, polished window would look better in this case, than painted one.

No matter it was a scrap box, you could do it better, cause you're able to, and in the end get more fun

northerner - 2013-11-08 09:52

I can't polish out smashed tuner glass I'm not that clever lol...the whole front of this box was a mess of cracks...it'd been drop kicked by the look of it...the tuner glass is still in my spares box tho despite its damage.

This has had a replacement piece of plastic fitted. It seemed sensible since I'm painting it anyway.

Tbh I've changed the plan for this loads already, I'm kinda making up as I go along, more fun that way

radio.raheem - 2013-11-08 17:17

Wish i had you're mad skills si....good luck what ever the outcome...least it gives you something to do

smeats1976 - 2013-11-09 07:01

All that matters is you're pleased with the result and you had fun doing it! I'm sure it will look the business

retro - 2013-11-09 07:16

I agree with Metad, the top holes would look better filled but the dividers can stay. You can also apply some rub-on lettering to go under a matte clear coat. Excellent job by the way.

shane - 2013-11-09 08:32

Stupid question alert...

what chemical, if any, do you use to clean the outer plastic casings on the sharp?

or is it warm soapy water and the wife's toothbrush?

cheers

northerner - 2013-11-09 09:40

Not a stupid question...you're right hot soapy water and the wife's toothbrush is the best method :-)

shane - 2013-11-09 09:53

Thanks. Still working on the GF500, see how it goes!!!

my 9191 will have to wait till next year I do believe, too busy working down South at mo...

northerner - 2013-11-09 11:11

Work....boo hiss!

Just sorted Neil/Schneil's 9191...I'd refurbed it a while ago but the deck still didn't sound right...so used the deck out of this scrapper but the speed was out so put the original back and swapped tape heads over and jobs a goodun...sounds great

sotza - 2013-11-09 14:11

Great job! So nice to see that mising corner be back again!

I wonder how to you plan (if you do) to replace the text around buttons.

deech - 2013-11-10 07:28

Northerner it comes out nice until now

pushing your own limits and see

how far you can go with your imagination

is always good oh and

i like the change of the title of the topic too !!

Btw do you remember that ''Wall'' theme

Sharp bbox we did see some time ago ?

http://REPLACEMENT ERROR/topic...7-pink-floyd-artwork

How cool was that box??

seb968 - 2013-11-10 07:33

That is cool deech!

northerner - 2013-11-10 08:55

Yeh that's one I did earlier.

Not.

Don't think my painting skills are quite up to that...hard to get that effect with crayons and finger painting

jt.techno - 2014-02-13 14:10

Hi Si - did you ever complete this project - would love to see the end result :-)

northerner - 2014-02-13 14:21

Not yet I'm afraid...unfortunately bulldozed the garage to build an extension so all I got to work in is a shed and it's been too freakin cold out there since November lol. It's definitely not been abandoned, just on hold...in fact I sometimes like these delays as it gives you time to think rather than rushing out the first idea that comes in to your head

jt.techno - 2014-02-13 14:34

Cool (...well, cold in your shed ;-)  ... just thought I'd ask after looking through some old threads for something else and stumbled upon this one again
