Ampex recording tape was the industry standard used in recording studios and TV stations from the late 1950's to the mid 90's. The name is an acronym of Alexander M. Poniatoff Excellence. Besides making recording tapes the Ampex's achievements included the development of the audio tape recorder and the first practical video tape recorders. A very important company in the history of recording. But your'e right, the name has always reminded me of Tampax!

Thanks mate, it is the pride of my collection realy. Back in the early 1980's this was cutting edge technology. Many of the TV programes round the world were made on machines like this. It is a frame accurate edit machine with Dolby A noise reduction for high quality audio. At the time it would have cost £35,000. I came accros it at work. They were going to dump it in the skip. With only 500 hours on the clock it was almost as new! Just goes to show how things change, yesterdays expensive tech is often today's obsolete junk! But to me it is wonderfull and I love it. (Even if the pictue quality from a hard disk recorder looks as good these days! )
