I'll bet this one goes over $1,000 easily! That sure is one nice boombox. Panasonic made some of the nicest boomboxes of the 1980's. Good luck guys! Big Grin I won't be bidding since I can't afford it. Roll Eyes

jaredscottfla - 2008-03-19 18:52

Roll Eyes me too Leaving

bashngu - 2008-03-19 18:56

Well if the seller is reading this by chance (which im fairly certain he is) he will now make sure it goes to $1000.

ohboy - 2008-03-19 18:56

it looks really nice,,, im in and watching

vladi123456 - 2008-03-19 18:58

I think I like the one in black better. But it would be interesting to watch this - NIB RX-7700 - wow!! The only thing that is more rare than that is me going on a date Laugh Out Loud
Anyhow, I'm almost tempted to email the seller and ask how many viewers there are Big Grin

And on a side note - James, why do you keep posting all this stuff? No offense, but the link to the listing is in the first post - there's no need to copy and paste anything - especially multiple times - makes it hard to read

masterblaster84 - 2008-03-19 18:58

Holy crap, two bidders are fighting all ready, It's at $305. Which one of you has lost your mind so early in the auction?
Laugh Out Loud

- 2008-03-19 18:58

Wow. Being bagged and boxed and its still that dirty? That thing is mad mint. On it for several. Nod Yes
May have to get one of the jersey forum members to clean it up for me. With a fee and brews of course Big Grin

bashngu - 2008-03-19 18:59

OK ill put $600 on it now. $800? $1500 What does it take to give a hint here?

- 2008-03-19 19:01

put 7 on it and I'll back off. Nod Yes

bashngu - 2008-03-19 19:04

Tell you what, ill just cancel all of my bids because I am not going to play into the stupidity of jacking these prices up. Doesnt anyone realize that sellers read these posts even if they arent active members and if this box wasn't going to go for $1000, you can rest assured that it will be shilled to that amount now.

boomboxnut - 2008-03-19 19:06

How do you figure the seller can make it go over $1000? Sellers can't bid on their own auctions. The seller doesn't have a reserve on it either. Shill bidding is against Ebay rules and is grounds for suspension or termination of account privileges. Sellers utilizing this unethical and dishonest method are easily caught by watchful and avid Ebayers. Confused Confused Roll Eyes

vektor7 - 2008-03-19 19:16

"After about 10 minutes or so it was playing great it stopped working & I couldnt get it to turn on again."

Since it's dead, I think $800 would be a fair price....

appleknocker - 2008-03-19 19:17

No disrespect at all to anyone that might want this box, if original packing is your thing then rock n' roll on this one. But in my humble opinion - I don't care at all about cardboard boxes, plastic bags, and styrofoam. I collect working boomboxes. And what I see here is a very desirable boombox that is not even working and has badly oxidized microphone covers and knobs all around. It even has dirt or rust on the microphone grill that should have been protected inside the boombox. How did it get messed up if it was always stored inside it's original packing? It doesn't look all that great to me. I wouldn't even consider for one second trading it for my 4360 that I got for under $300 from ebay.de

This box isn't close to mint, I think there will be a disastified buyer over paying for this box. Oxidation, rust, dirt and he can't even power it up. Sounds like a lot of ifs and maybe's but I guess the cardboard box and styrofoam might be worth $600 or $700.

are they aluminum? should be able to dis-mantle and power wheel buff. Depends on how pitted they are? It could use a serious cleaning. Looks as if no fine scratches exist on the unit. Curious to know if the power supply is rotted? And whatever else internally. Looks as if humidity had its way with it.

To clean this would be a cool project. That baby would gleem.

Let's play "Who asked What"!!!

Can we deal with a bit of honesty here? Based on the way things have gone here lately, I doubt it but let's give it a try shall we?

This is a list of Questions and Answers on this auction so far, and my guesses as to who asked what. PLUS RATINGS!! CHECK IT OUT!!!

Q: hi - i live about 40 miles away in palm beach county and would like to buy this box -- before- the auction goes to far along -- asking if you will post or send a BIN offer for immediate paypal payment and posdsible pick -up this friday -- either way - PLEASE let me know --thank you Mar-20-08
A: sorry, again there is no buy it now. if it sells for $25.00 or $100.00 so be it. Thats why I like Ebay it gives everyone an equal opportunity. thanks .

Guess = RBJ Wink Smooth! Good Try!! Rating: A+

Q: Hello, I understand that this item is currently not working. I repair radios and also have a parts machine for this. Would you be interested in a Buy It Now offer of $150 for this item? (plus shipping and packing charges) Let me know prior to adding the Buy It Now to the auction. Thanks Mar-20-08
A: I appreciate the offer, but these are very hard to find & I don't think iit would be fair to everyone else. thanks for the question. James

Guess = Yep, that's me (cheapskate? sure, but I tried)(I'm also not afraid to admit I tried) Rating: A+

Q: you have a serious piece there that is very hard to find let alone with the box and manual, which Im sure will fetch well over $1000. Very Very nice Mar-20-08
A: Yes It's a beautiful piece. I almost fell out of my chair when I opened the box. but, make sure everyone reads the ad, I tested it pretty good but at the end it stopped working, I think It's been sitting alone in the plastic for some time, mint, But in 1981 it was $700.00. this thing doesn't play.

Guess = I'll get to this one later!!!

Q: Hi. How much for buy it now, please? Thanks! Ovi. Mar-20-08
A: There is no buy it now...James

Guess = I don't know, but you need to work a bit on your wording if you are going to be successful with BIN offers. Rating: C-

Q: wow -- we can see this one is going to be POPULAR !! i emailed you a few minutes ago -- and there were no bids yet -- now there are lots of them -- anyway - let me know if you would prefer an offer - or if you would send a BIN price -- for a local pick-up -- thanks again Mar-20-08
A: I havent chked the ad yet but, I did chk messages & there were 8. alot. local pickup is fine. Let me know Prior, if thats something anyone wants to do. thanks for the question.

Guess = Definately a member here but the timing was bad so there is no way to give a style rating on this one! Rating: N/A

FIRST OF ALL let me make it quite clear that this is NOT an attack on anyone in particular so nobody get your underpants in a bunch. There is NO SHAME in ANYONE trying to strike a Buy It Now deal w/ a seller. Period!!!!!!! (Yes, you have done it!!) Even somebody who tries to make a deal offline (you know, that thing we all whine about). Offline transactions involve a BIG RISK on the buyers part, as they have ALOT to lose w/ no protection. So if they try and it works out for them, great! If they get screwed, then that's the chance they took. Just PLEASE don't anybody say it's not fair to Ebay because they lose money. I will seriously vommit! Ebay, Shmeebay, those greed beaks make enough.

The ONLY SHAMEFUL PERSON in my eyes is the individual in this case who had neither a question, nor offer for the seller but merely wanted to inform the seller of the potential value of their item. This is one of three people.

1. A person that the seller purposely had ask this question to promote a perceived value. (No, I don't think he is quite that clever either but I have been wrong before)
2. A truly kind-hearted person who was just so deeply in awe over what they were seeing that they simply had to express their feelings and give the seller a well deserved applause for offering such an item
3. A very jealous member here, who has no intentions of bidding because they know the final price will be way out of their realm but out of pure spite, made sure the seller was aware of what they had and guaranteed that NOBODY got a deal. (I really hope i'm way off base on this one but i'm sorry to say i'm leaning in this direction)

If you took the time to read this carefully then hopefully you understand my point.
AGAIN, remember all! The concept is simple! NOBODY goes to a store and says "let's see if I can pay top dollar today for everything I want" and NOBODY expects you to. Strike a deal if you can!!!! Try to get a bargain!!! You sure won't get one at the gas pumps, so get a deal where and when you can!!

BUT DON"T DO WHAT WAS DONE HERE!!!! IT"S LOW!!

PFAN or TPR, please PM me when you get a chance.

Bashngu, I know you're going to hammer me for this, but I think I can take it:

I'm surprised you're so angry about a bidder giving the seller (and other bidders) some idea about what his item is really worth. It may not be a smart move, but it won't change the outcome of the auction... unless, like boomboxnut said, the seller starts shilling his own item, which is grounds for suspension. And bidders willing to spend $1,000 will bid that high no matter what they read from another bidder.

I think what you're angry about is that the idea that this box could hit $1000 puts you out of the bidding. I understand that, but if I got angry every time an eBay price was too high for me, I'd've had a few strokes by now!

But here's some honesty. Making an under-the-table offer and asking the seller to let you know "prior to adding the Buy It Now to the auction" is cheating. Period!!!!!!! That's what you should be angry about. And no, I have not done it (and have probbably lost a few auctions because of it).

I don't care how you rationalize it (eBay makes enough money already; gas prices are high; everybody does it; it's risky), it cheats eBay and isn't fair to bidders who play by the rules. I admire this seller for turning down all under-the-table offers and letting his auction run out. A seller who is honest enough to do that probably won't start bidding on his own item to drive up the final price.

redbenjoe - 2008-03-20 06:47

trying to keep this conversation -- both honest and light Smile

YES YES - i am the honest and obviuos and VERY predictable dude who lives 40 miles away -- and would surely like to drive down there a pick up this cute box

i asked for friday -- because that happens to be the final friday of SPRING BREAK --and this seller is conveniently just moments away from Fort Lauderdale Beach -

and -- really - maybe i am the ONLY collector in the world who would be happy with a 'double score' Smile --- but thats just me !

that particular listing very clearly states that 'reasonable offers would be accepted'
but , honestly, i would have done it anyway !

i do respect everybody who wants to 'preserve the integrity of ebay' -- we all have different opinions about this matter -

but often members here get pissed and quit about
conversations like this --and then they lose all the fun and benefits from this great club-
(so WHY WHY WHY make these morality posts ???)

--- there might be some members here who often and always LOW BALL a trusting little old lady -as she may ask "what is my late husbands boombox collection worth ? "

so - lets be cool - about judging and inserting morality issues --its just an ENDLESS topic that never has that happy ending -- OK ??

______________

i would like to divert all the attention to the sale of my AIWA 950 -- which Madonna and i are selling n this same forum --
and the reason i mention it on THIS topic --

is that (IMHO) -- this 950 sounds ALOT better than the panny 7700 -- REALLY Smile

I'm with Ira on this one - who are we to judge people - even if they do stupid things like informing sellers that their items worth over a grand....It's not like they killed somebody, or sold military secrets to terrorists.
The way I see it - we live only once, and if you really want something - just get it and enjoy it - that's what credit cards are for Big Grin

vladi123456 - 2008-03-20 07:25

Ira, I hope you win this one, and when you go pick it up - make sure you take your camera and provide this forum with some pictures of *girls gone wild* - last day of spring break should count for something Wink

As usual, people have me wrong but i'm used to it. Im not going to bash you for your opinion at all. That's NOT what I am about. I will address a few parts of what you stated in a civil, discussion-like format.

"I'm surprised you're so angry about a bidder giving the seller (and other bidders) some idea about what his item is really worth. It may not be a smart move, but it won't change the outcome of the auction"

First off, I don't believe that this person is bidding or planning to bid on the auction and you are correct, it would not end the outcome of the auction if it goes it's full length but I believe the persons goal was to eliminate the possibility of a "quick ending". This would be a catch 22 if the person planned on bidding because yes, they eliminated a "quick end" but they have also greatly raised the public "perceived" value as well as opened up the door to potential shill bidding if the seller did not know the worth. Simply put, I can't see this statement coming from an actual bidder. So if you are not going to bid.... leave it alone..

"I think what you're angry about is that the idea that this box could hit $1000 puts you out of the bidding."

You are off on this one. Yes, $1000 puts me out, but simply because I choose to be. I wouldn't pay more than $400 for it. Thats why I went for a cheap BIN and actually offered $225 a 2nd time when I realized it went above my original offer rather quickly. This box "shouldn't hit $1000" If it does, it's because we made it that way. Take away the box and packing and you have a non-working, very dirty, possibly corroded/pitted Panasonic. Somebody could take the box etc... and put their good one in there. There's an idea, but $1000 is alot to pay for a box and styrofoam. It's not like the carton and the radio inside are a matched set. Who would know?

"Making an under-the-table offer and asking the seller to let you know "prior to adding the Buy It Now to the auction" is cheating. Period!!!!!!! That's what you should be angry about. And no, I have not done it (and have probbably lost a few auctions because of it)."

This is your opinion and if you feel that way, I won't argue the point. I just do not feel that way. Although I agree that offline transactions are somewhat deceitful, BIN offers are open game. Cheating? No! It's the way it is. The sellers are there to sell their items for the most they can get. Period!! We as buyers dont want to hear that but, it is what it is. It's the sellers intention to get the most that they can. It's the buyers intention to get the item for the least that they can. When a BIN offer is suggested, the seller needs to decide if that amount meets or exceeds their expectations. If it does, they say OK. If they think they can get more, they decline. Keep in mind that a seller DOES NOT HAVE TO ACCEPT a BIN Offer. They don't accept the offers to be nice and give us a break. They accept offers ONLY because they feel they are maximizing their profits. It's not an under-the-table offer. The ability to add a BIN is there if the seller feels satisfaction with the offer. I have mis-called a few auctions where I actually won the auction for less than what I initially offered the seller as a BIN and they chose to let it ride.

"I don't care how you rationalize it (eBay makes enough money already; gas prices are high; everybody does it; it's risky), "

I dont care if you care Wink I am a realist and I simply work with "what is". I don't feel this makes me a bad person, I play the game as it is put before me.

"it cheats eBay"

I puked, are you happy? Smile

"and isn't fair to bidders who play by the rules."

All's fair in love and war!! The next time you are at a flea market and you spot an M-90 for $60, tell the guy that you dont want it now but will be back later in the day to give all potential buyers a "fair" shot at it and to make sure that no one else is willing to offer him more before you take it off his hands. Ill bet if he said "well I was going to sell it for $60 but I think I will see if anyone offers more for it" that you would certainly up the stakes immediately and not wait for others to make an offer better than yours.

"I admire this seller for turning down all under-the-table offers and letting his auction run out."

It was his choice!! Don't be so sure of yourself when it comes to his motives for "letting it ride" I think it's safe to say he knew he had a good thing when he came back to gazillion offers in his inbox. I wouldnt have budged either.

"A seller who is honest enough to do that probably won't start bidding on his own item to drive up the final price"

You still have much faith in human nature. I simply lack in that area. I'm still an OK guy. IMO Wink

In closing, the point of all of this was that I feel the comment made by whoever this was, was unnecessary and had alterior motives but it's neither here nor there.

Anyway, I KNOW there are many well respected members here (not me, i'm hated!...lol) who feel no differently or at least very similar to what I do when it comes to this issue and follow many of the same practices. Will they step forward and chime in? Doesnt really matter does it? It's all a matter of opinion.

My opinion is that I am probably too "opinionated" to even post things here. Laugh Out Loud I get too caught up in things like this where there is no wrong and right answer. It's ALL just opinions! I think I should stick mostly to the tech thread where I may be able to assist as well as learn, and where there is less controversy. Big Grin
